Running race (Mousdash) 43:12 [4] 10.5 km (4:07 / km) +300m 3:36 / km
shoes: Asics DS Trainer 13
My first go at the Mousdash, 13th overall and 7th in 30-39 but it was a weaker field than some years. I'm very happy with the time though - it's only 7s slower thank Kieran's best and 33s slower than Clive's.
The race starts at the Botanic Gardens right at the bottom of the hill on Mt Coot-tha Rd and heads straight up the main road past the lookout and continuing along Sir Samuel Griffith Dr past the tv stations, down the hill and back to the Botanic Gardens, finishing just inside the car park.
I started from about 6 rows back and started slowly. By turn off Mt Coot-tha Rd, was already making my way through the pack. I realised shortly after this that the pace was about the same as Saturday morning run pace, i.e., relatively easy. I picked the pace up a bit as the incline allowed and continued to make places. At 3km I was running with the woman who appeared to be the 2nd place woman and since the winning woman last year was 42min, I figured this was a good place to be. If skinny was equivalent to fit, then this woman was FIT. Along the rolling hills around the top, I slowly edged in front of the woman and another guy, and seemed be closing in on the group with the 1st girl. The hills were starting to feel tough.
I took a cautious approach to the big descent, trying to increase my pace without killing my quads. I managed to overtake a couple of guys and creep closer to 1st-Place Woman. Only one human cannonball with a jangling pocket full of change went past me here - I had to look around because he sounded like a horde rather than just one guy.
At the bottom of the hill I ran past Wendy who gave me a great cheer and I concentrated on closing with 1st Place Woman. At the final hill, a stocky guy that I'd passed on the descent came through and I put on a big effort to keep pace. I probably overdid it a little and was stuffed at the top, and let 1st Place Woman go past (I'd overtaken her on the hill). And that was pretty much how we finished. Good fun.
