Adventure Racing race (GOALS ARA Savage) 5:56:30 [4] 25.0 mi (14:16 / mi) +1200ft 13:38 / mi
shoes: Salomon 3D Pro - Green/Purple

Sprint race at Sand Island Park in Bethlehem, PA. New spot for GOALS races, and a great area. Brent and I raced as a coed-2.

Race started with a 2k-ish memory-o, which Brent did. Teams were then divided by discipline order. We drew paddle-foot-bike. Team Challenges could be done at any point.

Paddle took us up the canal about 3.5k and then back down the Lehigh River, for a total of seven points. We took a risk and pulled out about 500m early and ran/swam for the farthest out points. We were in second off the water and made up some time on the lead team - our teammate, Jim and his sister.

Quick (and not so efficient) run through the "team challenges" (partner carry, rope maze, sling shot) and then transitioned to bike and took our second gamble - instead of riding a western out-and-back over a bridge, we sprinted east down a rail trail between the canal and the river and crossed the Lehigh with our bikes. We thought the water was a bit shallower than it ended up being - at one point, I was in up to my chin, with my bike over my head. Overall, though, it was a good move, and we entertained a lot of volunteers.

Foot loop had seven points and was largely on trails, and we were able to run almost all of it. We had one bobble that cost us about 10 minutes. Came in with 2:20:00 left for the bike.

Seventeen points on bike. The trails were gnarly and technical, and we decided to drop bikes and run a loop for 7 of the points. We again made up a lot of time with that strategy but had a second tough bobble and lost another 15 minutes. Ultimately had to drop the two farthest bike points because of the lost time, and came in with 3 minutes to spare.

Not sure of placement. Looked like second to Jim in coed-2 and third overall, behind a male-2 team, but we left pre-awards. Glad we're usually racing with Jim instead of against him - he's a beast!

Overall, felt great about our strategy/route choice and good physically - we both got stronger as the race wore on. Also, second race using nuun, and I'm officially a fan. 80+ degrees today and I felt steady the whole time.

Distance/elevation are estimates.

Note

Routine appt with the asthma doc this morning. Lungs are in good shape - he increased advair dose for the seven days of racing in Alaska, to deal with the potential cold.

Our plan was to paddle down the Wissahickon Creek from GA to Chestnut Hill College, just before the entrance to Fairmount Park, since Brent was pulled over and fined by two state rangers a couple weeks ago for paddling within park boundaries (and not wearing a PFD - story here: http://brentfreedland.blogspot.com/2015/04/speedin...).

The water was really low and for the first mile and a half, we spent as much time walking alongside the boat as we did in it, but otherwise it was relatively smooth. Brent sterned and I focused on widening my grip and sighting the water. We had a fun little portage in the middle of a golf course toward the end of the route, where a caddy frantically ran over to warn us not to go over the dam. Biggest takeaway is that our new Alpacka Gnu was incredible, awesome, amazing, stupendous. Felt almost like we were in a kayak - lightyears better than the Flyweights that we had at Untamed 2012.

Ended up at the college a bit short on time because of the low water, and we had to get back to GA to pick Z up from daycare, so I jumped out and ran the last half mile to the car while Brent packed up the boat.

Trekking (Commuting) 1:06:00 [3] 5.0 mi (13:12 / mi) +219ft 12:40 / mi
shoes: Altra Olympus

Got ready this morning to ride downtown for a meeting...

...and then realized that my surly doesn't have pedals on it.

...and my mountain bike has two flat tires.

...and I was sad.

So, drove downtown for my meeting and trekked this afternoon to meet Z and B at GA instead, with a couple-hour pitstop at Starbucks to work. ~10 pounds in pack.

Shuffled about a third of this leg, but it wasn't so comfortable with my computer on my back.
