Monday Aug 27, 2018 #

Note

Started a three-hour steady effort on the trainer tonight. Made it through 20 minutes of discomfort and decided to pull the plug.

Sunday Aug 26, 2018 #

Note
(sick)

Woke up yesterday with a slight chest cold. A little bit worse today, so took an extra rest day to keep it in check.

Trail Run 1:26:55 [3] 6.16 mi (14:07 / mi) +892ft 12:24 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross

12 x 1 min hike up/run down repeats, then steady trail run. A mix of humidity, higher than expected temps, nearly unrunnable washed-out tree-ridden trails, residual grit in my socks that tore up my toes, and stomach rumblings that had me walking the last mile home. Basically, just glad when this one was over.

3 PM

Road Run 47:43 [4] 4.89 mi (9:45 / mi) +150ft 9:29 / mi
shoes: Brooks Launch 3 - Hypercolor

Hot, hot, hot. Interval workout, and the only time I could go was 3:30pm, in 90 degrees temps with no clouds. 10x30sec sprints. Did okay for the first nine, then wilted on the final one. Walked much of the c/d home - my legs felt cooked.

Tuesday Aug 14, 2018 #

Bike - Roads (TrainerRoad) 1:30:00 [4] 20.63 mi (13.8 mph)

15min w/u, 60min tempo, 15min c/d

Road Run 49:15 [3] 5.11 mi (9:38 / mi) +292ft 9:09 / mi
shoes: Salomon XA Pro - Turqoise (2)

Made it to Amherst to pick up the pup. After two weeks of lazing and two long days of traveling, my body felt pretty blah, but it perked up after the first couple miles. Heading home today - ready for a little bit more structure in my life again.

Trekking 57:27 [2] 2.64 mi (21:46 / mi) +136ft 20:45 / mi

Last hike of the trip. en route from Halifax to Yarmouth and the ferry home. Continued our 7/7/7 to good effect.

8 PM

Road Run 31:13 [3] 3.29 mi (9:29 / mi) +112ft 9:12 / mi
shoes: Salomon XA Pro - Turqoise (2)

After another full day of walking around, a short sunset run (with a couple errands thrown in) to make sure my legs still work. They do. I would have liked to go further, but there were hoards of people along the water and it was too dark to see anywhere else.

Thursday Aug 9, 2018 #

Note

In Halifax for a few days. Nice to be able to just leave the car in a lot and walk around. Garmin tells me about 8 miles today -- wearing flip flops the whole time may explain why my legs feel tired.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2018 #

11 AM

Trekking 3:32:12 [2] 7.91 mi (26:50 / mi) +860ft 24:19 / mi
shoes: Salomon XA Pro - Turqoise (2)

Cape Split with B and Z. We continued our 7/7/7 rhythm and it worked really well. So, 1/3 of the time I had a 40lb 4-year-old on my shoulders, 1/3 I had a heavy pack, and 1/3 I was either chasing Z down the trail or gently urging her on. I have to say, she's turned into quite the trail runner - she's faster and more agile downhill than I am.

Also, thanks to a gummy every 30 minutes, lots of storytelling (she's been asking for stories about people and animals that get sick or "get dead" from things in the woods... hmm...), and a few disney story podcasts on the return, there was NO whining!

Note

Added a brief recap of UNE. Will post full report if/when one of us writes one.

Trekking 1:07:14 [3] 1.37 mi (49:04 / mi) +94ft 46:04 / mi

Lazy hike to a waterfall, with some splashing and scrambling in the creek.

10 AM

Trekking 1:30:35 [2] 3.9 mi (23:14 / mi) +353ft 21:24 / mi
shoes: Salomon XA Pro - Turqoise (2)

Hike on the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton National Park. We found a nice rhythm, with Z on my shoulders for 7 minutes, then B's for 7 minutes, then walking (running) on her own for 7 minutes, repeated for the duration. A little bit of whining at the turnaround notwithstanding, this was a great hike, and I was impressed with Z's increasing stamina.
