Orienteering race (NOL 3) 1:16:30 [5]
ahr:160 max:174 shoes: Inov8 Xtalon 212 (2)

Eureka Challenge Mass Start Hagaby at Chinamans Flat. Started out the way i finished yesterday - terribly! Couldn't make any sense of the map early on, was on the wrong side of the gully on the 1st control and even once we got the control i couldn't work it out. made another fairly big mistake on the 1st loop not long after keely and i got a small lead, keely got it but i ended up at the back of a big group after they came through and showed me where it was...

the second loop went a little better, started to calm down a bit and felt a bit more relaxed when i looked over my shoulder and saw simon. then coming into the end of the loop i got slowed down by some really heavy bracken - sounds like i wasn't the only one to go through it! lost 100m or so but just cruised into the map change without getting too stressed about it.

i was happy to have simon with me on the start of the last loop but i had no idea where craney or any others were, then a few controls into it we were all together. not sure where we formed the lead pack - craney, simon, oscar and myself, but we shared the lead and ran pretty well for most of the last loop. i went to sleep a bit when i was on the front with just a couple of controls to go and left the track too early. luckily the other 3 followed and to be honest i wasn't too worried, i had far more chance of keeping with oscar and craney in the forest than i did on the track. but then as we were coming into the control we saw keely and nsw stinger punching right in front of us - i hadn't expected that, i don't think any of us did. from there it was on, fast and furious. i had no chance against those boys in a sprint, happy to hold off simon at least to get 4th. what a great race, awesome fun. i never felt physically comfortable but at least i was able to run at that speed, pretty happy given how disrupted my training has been lately with so much travelling. hopefully a few more long runs before easter will sort me out.

Craney has a good write up of the race.

at "Ballarat" University (not really in Ballarat). pretty easy course, felt like just running. i guess there was a few small route choices but nothing too dramatic. i ran pretty clean, i'm just not quick enough for a race like that. good fun anyway. finished a good 35 seconds behind craney in 5th, and even more behind the impressive occy mcnulty...

At Surface Hill. It's been a while since i have trained twice in a day, and racing twice a day happens even less, so i thought i'd struggle with this one but i actually felt pretty decent. ran steady for most of it, never felt like i was setting the map on fire but didn't lose any significant chunks of time, and actually got into the lead for the 2nd half of the course until just a couple of controls to go... i was 28 seconds in front of simon (but only 8 ahead of craney) at 17 then made a stupid mistake to 18 - had my direction a bit wrong and ran towards the big black cliff to the left of the control thinking it was the brown one behind the control - should have just looked for the big rock right next to the control! dammit. lost about 20 secs there, and then was real hesitant to the next one, stole the lead back at the 2nd last and then ran the wrong way to the last - disaster finish! luckily managed to hang onto 2nd, just 5 seconds behind simon (i lost 4 of them on the run in!) and 6 ahead of craney.

great new area for orienteering! personally i'd have liked to be running on 1:7500 like the non NOL classes did.

another day of travelling, this time driving down to the eureka challenge.

did a short jog around the golf course at sunbury, threw in 4 x 30 second efforts with 2 mins jog recovery in there to loosen up the legs. actually felt ok running.

hit up some hill beside the road to roxby downs, a rough dirt track up about 1min 40secs with a bit of flat up on top. Did 10 efforts with a jog back down as recovery. hot in the sun running with the breeze on the way up, but nice and cool running into the breeze on the way down.
