MTBO Race race (Sprint event (crap)) 1:00:21 [2] 12.08 km (12.0 kph) +114m
ahr:157 max:179 shoes: GIANT XTC 29er 2016

Summary NSW MTBO championships (sprint distance)

From Split time Time loss Comment

start to CP1 4:33 Started a bit hesitant had some issues to find the track that goes south east but found it after 2-3 min

CP2 20.21 16 min Rubbish, I went off the map and even though I stopped several times to try to re-orient myself i did not realise i was maybe 200 mt from CP2..

Eventually both Lucy and I encountered the same issue, and together found it. Really pity, as my sprint race ended before it began..

CP3 3:05 Smooth no problems
CP4 3:19 Smooth no problems
CP5 2:40 Smooth no problems
CP6 1:58 Smooth no problems

CP7 4:26 2:30 There was some issues in the mapping of this junction, took the north but then went back to take the loop that goes to CP7, so lost some time but not major

CP8 5:34 Did not take the optimal route choice, I also think the control was much closer to the main crossing track, but in the map it seems wrong

CP9 1:33 Smooth no problems

CP10 2:04 Probably could have taken a better route choice via the parking but no time loss

CP11 3:24 I actually won this split (Yay) (-; took the main rd
CP12 1:55 Smooth no problems
CP13 1:48 Took this control a bit cautiously
Cp14 2:32 Smooth no problems
CP15 1:13 Won this split, yay, but again too little and too late

Overall, disappointing, I thought the days of big mistakes were long time over, and especially in sprint, area that I have recently improved a lot. The big mistake in CP2 ended my race today; even tough afterwards things went pretty well. I have to take singles sections slower and safer, riding fast just makes it worse...pay attention to details! and not make quick decisions without watching the full picture first, easy to say, but not so much to implement. Any ideas how to improve in this aspect will be appreciated.

Summary NSW MTBO championships (middle distance)

From Split time Time lost Comment

start to CP1 4:36 My map fell from the wind, I think it is time to tighten my map board or buy a new one

CP2 13:19 Long way up, climbing was consistent but the terrain was hard to cycle and that really irritated me

CP3 24 16 min Just like the sprint, I was dreaming again, I rode past the open space which is very distinct object in the terrain and the map, but it took me too long to realise I actually went very far and had also to climb back, so pity. Also, I should have taken CP3 from the high side and not from the bottom and made the time lost even worse.

CP4 12 No time loss, but could have made better route choice
CP5 4:38 Came second in this split (-;
CP6 9:16 Almost tempted to take the single, but it looked too steep, so change direction and went through the wide fire track, came second in this split so probably good decision

CP7 5:07 Clean
CP8 3:15 Clean and fast..
CP9 6:49 2:35 min Did not find the entry to the track from the far side (apparently stopped 20 mt before) so took the steep downhill which I mostly ran

CP10 6:44 Took the 2nd single straight to the control point, it was tough but easy landing! Came 2nd in this split, yay (-;

CP11 20:11 8:23min Took an early turn, realised it and was trying to correct as I know I was not far, since I was standing just above the creek, unfortunately I should have just keep moving another 100mt or so and would have landed in CP11, but decided to go out again. My first intuition was that this was the wrong junction, but is till took it..bugger

CP12 6:00 Clean, but could cycle faster
CP13 1:47 I won this split..(-;
Finish 1:19 Clean

Overall, disappointing again, two big mistakes which actually I have could avoided easily by just “not dreaming” in the middle of the race. The rest of the control points were fine and in some of them I either finished 2nd or won. If I can reduce these big mistakes my good fitness will also be more pronounced. Need to work more on map concentration and speed adustment! The relatively longer distance demonstrates how much I could have avoided (around 5km at the least).
