NA Sprint

Legs were ridiculously sore after yesterday. Didn't recover well enough. Also don't think I warmed up nearly enough.

Clean in the beginning but then some small mistakes in the easy section. Missed the entrance on the long leg and then ran too far to 12.

Dead in the end, just didn't have the same feeling in the body as yesterday or Saturday.

NA Sprint Relay

Started out ok but lost some time in the woods. Really bad route to 3 (+15s) and several bobbles. Passed some American teams though.

Felt better than in the sprint. Surprising with only about 30min of recovery. Says how badly prepared I was in the morning.

NA Long

I realised after the middle that I was just way too nervous and trying too hard. All I needed was a clean race but I was going all-in. So I tried really hard to control my mental state before the race and stay relaxed.

Started really slowly to 1, and went a bit off to 2 but recovered well. Got into it a bit more after that. An ok split on the long leg to 6 despite a minute lost in to the control. Was fairly satisfied going through the spectator loop that I had gotten through the hard first loop ok and was looking forward to more trails in the southern part. Heard the announcer say that I was sitting in 5th Place, and I wasn't sure if that was total or out of the North Americans. I assumed it was 5th NA which I thought was reasonable considering that Bone, Dman, Ross, Will and others had started before me.

Started to run a bit too fast, trying to make up places, and I could feel my concentration slipping. Took a gel at 12 which helped a bit. Was navigating the small trails really well at high speed in the southern part but was making mistakes in to the controls. Couldn't handle the switch in speeds and technique. Lost over a minute to 14 and 16, and was feeling like the race was slipping away from me. Somehow I re-focused though and I think I ran well from 18 to the finish, pushing really hard on the trails.

I had no idea what to expect running in to the last control, but a big relief when I saw the crowd that had gathered and finally erupt as I punched as the top NA. A great feeling, which only lasted a minute. Total shock when I saw "mp" on my printout.

The printout said I had missed two controls, 6 and 14. I knew for sure that I had been to them, having made mistakes to both. It was possible in my mind that I had punched too quickly, since I did that this summer at Nighthawk with Emit, but this would have been the first time in my life with SI, and it felt really unlikely with two controls. I decided to put in a complaint to try everything I could to get reinstated. It felt like a lost cause though, and I had sort of accepted that I would only unoffically have the fastest time. It's kinda crazy that I wasn't more upset about it...

But it all got settled, thanks to the great Ottawa OC tech crew. Apparently the info on the two punches was on my SI card but it was just all screwed up. So now my 7 year-old SI is on its way to Germany to see what was wrong with it. The alternatives were for it to be smashed to pieces or framed on my wall.

Amazing to win in Ottawa in front of my home club! A very special day.
