running race 9:58:31 [3] * 50.4 mi (11:53 / mi)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro '11

Bull Run Run 50 mile ultramarathon.
My first 50 miler completed with no training. Aside from O-meets, my longest long run was 1 hour 30 minutes just five days before the race, to test if my knee pain was any better or worse on flattish trails. The under kneecap pain goes away after I warmup, but I'm starting on glucosamine supplements.
Under 10 hours, and beat my previous finish time by 1 minute, though I was calculating the times wrong during the race and thought I was 1 hour faster. I gave up racing after 20 miles, content to go slow and just finish, or even walk the rest of the way, but I was steady for the next 20 miles. I'm getting better, only bonking with 5 miles to go and losing 15 places. Still finished 111th of 302 overall finishers.
I didn't follow my fueling strategy very well. I didn't eat the food I carried, and wasn't drinking much except at aid stations. After mile 16, I ate mostly chips and soda, a few small potatoes, some small pickles, 2 popsicles, some gatorade, 2 honey stinger waffles, half slice pizza, a few electrolyte pills, half a lara bar. Why did I carry 4 other bars, 2 cracker packs, 2 clifblok packs?!
No cramps except in the last 2 miles when I tried to push to the finish. I think calf compression sleeves make a huge difference. My signature moves that no other runners do: 1) pick up a stick and use as a hiking pole for the last 10 miles; 2) carry a cup of potato chips or potatoes while running 25 miles. I eventually dumped the chips into my pocket to carry them, but they got crushed so it was difficult to eat. That is why I like to carry them in a cup. But I couldn't carry the cup while using a hiking pole and a handheld bottle, so 1 of these had to go.
