orienteering long 10:15:00 [3] **** 15.0 mi (41:00 / mi)

Zones 2 and 1. Zone 2 was totally whack. Found 1 point, 3 flags on wrong features and location, 5 locations with no flags. Walked up the steepest re-entrant ever, looking for non-existent flag and bailing out by going up to the ridge since I was already too high. Many people confused on the ridge. Once it got light out, I was able to verify my locations better, and was convinced I was in the right places with no flags. Did not attempt 4 other points and ran back to notify Ronny, got to see the 8-hour rogainers and their race brief.

Zone 1 was so easy because it was daytime, and the steep hills were nothing as steep as I had been on in the dark. I was hitting everything very confidently. Could have finished quickly, but Ronny had said I could get previous points I had skipped to make up for Zone 2 mess-up. Walked up to hillside (pt 40) from different attack, and still could not find it. Walked to bottom of Zone 4 to get 2 high value points. A very pleasant walk on the ridges and spurs down there, but road walk back was getting painful. Very interesting to see the area in the day compared to night. Had to walk around lake to get more Zone 1 points. Finished a bit after 2 PM. My extra points would not get counted though. Too bad each successive zone had fewer available points. I skipped the wrong points early and coulnd't make it up later
