biking 4:20:00 [3] *** 24.0 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp

Scouting some trails near Wolf Gap. Rode up abandoned road and bushwhacked over a ridge to the Judge Rye Rd. Long climb up Devils Hole Mt. Unrideable ridge on Great North Mountain. Loose, narrow, steep descent down Fall Ridge. Looked for more trailheads on Laurel Run Rd. Long road climb back up to the Gap. Hottest day of the year so far.

orienteering 1:05:00 [2] ** 4.0 mi (16:15 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Wings

Hike to Big Schloss at sunset, and run back down. This ridge is mostly unrideable also. Would be a steep and loose descent as well. At least the trail is wide enough

Sunday May 29, 2011 #

biking 1:30:00 [2] * 12.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp

Mountain biking at Lorton Prison, Laurel Hill. Some of the fields were crazy overgrown with grass, so many ticks.

Saturday May 28, 2011 #

walking 1:10:00 [2] 2.5 mi (28:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Wings

Walking around Glen Echo Park, then Mormon Temple Visitor Center for a choral concert.

biking 45:00 [3] 8.0 mi (5:37 / mi)
shoes: Cannondale Roam

Lake Fairfax trails. Ice Rink, various loops, out and back to Rt 7. Tried to go easy.

Wednesday May 25, 2011 #

orienteering 40:00 [2] ** 3.33 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2100

Easy run in Lake Fairfax trails. Thunderstorm and rain forced me to bushwhack back to trails near campground and run home.

Sunday May 22, 2011 #

biking 3:05:00 [3] 40.0 mi (4:37 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp

W&OD trail Reston to Leesburg, then navigating through shopping centers and neighborhoods to the O meet. Return trip included stops for BBQ and burrito.

orienteering 1:17:00 [3] *** 7.5 km (10:16 / km)

Balls Bluff. Did not push the pace. Walking uphill was tiring all day. Legs not recovered from the ultra run. Navigation was slow and methodical, and therefore fairly clean.

Saturday May 21, 2011 #

biking 1:20:00 [3] ** 8.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Cannondale Roam

Fountainhead loop. Not as smooth as I remembered it. I did not ride any of the new elevated bridges / balance beams.

Note
slept:11.0

While running the race, I thought of a better sleep setup that I used after I DNF'd. I put the air mattress on a picnic table inside the pavillion/building and used the tent as a tarp/blanket. This was warmer, but trapped moisture. I flipped the tent/blanket several times at night to let the wet side dry out while I continued to sleep. Woke up in time to get to the post-race food.

running race 17:07:00 [3] **** 63.1 mi (16:17 / mi) +2625m 14:25 / mi
slept:3.0 shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3

Massanutten 100 trail run. 100 mile run, but gave up after 63 miles ~ 100k. Did not have the desire to walk 13+ hours more and possibly not finish. 4 AM race start did not work for me. Looking to officially finish a 50+ mile race this year to qualify for next year.

Note
slept:3.0

Reserved a spot in a walled tent with beds. It looked to be too cramped and maybe cold. Chose to set up a tent on the floor in the pavillion/enclosed building. Then realized that I did not bring tent poles. Tried to use trekking poles and some fishing rods as makeshift tent poles. These did not work very well. Then decided to go back to the bunks, but realized that I forget to bring a sleeping bag. All I had was a thin sheet and a large towel. Decided to try the tent again because at least that would be enclosed and warmer. I found 2 chairs and put them inside the tent to prop up the roof and slept between the legs of the chairs, using a towel as a blanket. Was warm enough, but not very comfortable. Had to be careful not to bang my head if I sat up. Tried to go to sleep early and wake up at 3, but did not sleep well. It rained all night. I don't think I could have slept in the car with the windows up.

Note

Rest day, packing for the Massanutten 100. Need to get good sleep. Race starts early Saturday morning - 4 AM.

Wednesday May 11, 2011 #

biking 1:00:00 [2] ** 8.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Easy spin on trails at Lake Fairfax. Ran into big organized group rides.

Tuesday May 10, 2011 #

running 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Lake Fairfax trail run. Pit stop at picnic area in the middle.

Sunday May 8, 2011 #

orienteering 1:37:30 [3] **** 10.0 km (9:45 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3

Mason Neck. Every was flat, I had no visual to go by, so I got confused a lot. Also lost time because another runner was sitting next to the control and blocked my view - I was nearby, but there were no features in the woods.

biking 45:00 [3] 7.0 mi (6:26 / mi)
shoes: Cannondale Roam

Laurel Hill singletrack. Skipped apple orchard loop but rode everything else. Easy trail, did not try to go fast.

orienteering 25:00 [2] ** 1.5 mi (16:40 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Wings

Laurel Hill frisbee golf. Holes 1-6, 17, 18. Buswhacked later to locate holes 7 and 10 while biking, just for fun and to help out other golfers who were somewhat lost. Grass was too long and the thorn bushes were quite thick, so only played the holes close to the start. Orienteering via hole layout maps at the teepads of the holes, which show contours and vegetation.

Saturday May 7, 2011 #

biking 2:17:00 [3] 12.0 km (11:25 / km)
shoes: Cannondale Roam

MTB-O at Rosaryville. Map board would not stay up on handlebars. Had to stop too much to read map, and several major errors.

biking 40:00 [3] *** 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Control pickup after MTB-O. Stayed mostly on perimeter trail, which was a fun ride. Got confused on trails in the same area where I waited for horses to stop and drink water during the race.

competitive eating 1:20:00 [3]
weight:2.5lbs

Peter Pan buffet for Mother's Day. Did not push for more at the end, but still 5 plates.

Friday May 6, 2011 #

running long 3:35:00 [2] *** 16.0 mi (13:26 / mi)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3

Little Fort Campground, Powell Mountain/Bear Trap/Peters Mill Road toward Edinburg Gap, return on Massanutten trail, Waonaze Peak, Woodstock tower. Long gradual uphill run to start, followed old trail/bushwhack to get onto Massanutten trail below Wanoaze Peak. Trail was full of uneven pointy rocks. Long time on ridge to return to Woodstock tower, then old trail switchbacks down to campground.
