Running 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Running to the start.

Orienteering race 1:16:53 [4] *** 11.2 km (6:52 / km) +420m 5:47 / km

US Champs Day 2.
A lot, a lot better. Orienteered well and in control right from the start and only made a couple of small mistakes after catching Ross and running too fast. Lost time on two route choices towards the end, but these were purposefully safe choices, so I don't regret it. Won the day, but still ended up 4th overall, 2nd US behind Will. Quite happy with the run. And I really enjoyed the whole weekend - coming here and meeting so many friends (plus my parents!) and just being back in the atmosphere of US orienteering felt great. I had missed it. Plus, the orienteering and the organization of the event were both high quality, which ended to the experience.

Running 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Warm-up, jog to the start. No cool-down - too tired, angry, and bloody.

Orienteering race 1:49:09 [4] *** 12.9 km (8:28 / km) +470m 7:09 / km

US Champs Day 1 and WRE.
A bloodfest. The map was about 60% green, and the course-setting took advantage of this. It was tough orienteering - very different from what I am used to in Sweden, and it was tough to suppress the habit of going straight and reading all the features on each leg, since many chunks of forest were unpassable, and many others were significantly slower than white woods. The forest constantly pushed you off the straight line, and it was a big challenge to maintain contact and find nice runnable bits. I did not rise to the challenge, and ended up leaving 15 minutes of mistakes out in the forest, and still felt like the race was not a total disaster. Very impressive runs by Mike Smith and Will Hawkins, showing the rest of us how it's done.

Event: US Champs

Orienteering 31:17 [2] 2.61 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

After a fairly uneventful flight and a nice night at Valerie Meyer's place in DC, I got out on the model event for the US Sprint Champs in the morning. The model area was very green and thorny, but I was assured that the actual race area was much better.

Running 25:00 [2] 2.94 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

A warm-up for the sprint and then a cool-down with Ross afterwards.

Orienteering race 15:44 [5] *** 2.9 km (5:26 / km) +98m 4:38 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

US Sprint Championships, Quantico, Virginia.
A fun course, if not too difficult technically. To be fair, the terrain here really isn't great sprint terrain, and the course made the best use of what was available. I felt fairly tired overall right from the start, but managed to focus pretty well and ran a race I was satisfied with. No big mistakes, though there were two misses of about 10 seconds or so, one on the long leg, where I twisted my ankle jumping over the creek, then had to walk for a bit and lost focus temporarily, heading up the wrong reentrant, making my route slower than optimal. Still, overall a good race, and a 3rd place (2nd US Champs), 12 seconds behind Eric and just 6 ahead of an impressive Ross.

Orienteering 15:00 [1]

Model event for the classic.

Running 31:00 [2] 3.87 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes

Easy jog at lunchtime. Legs felt dead.

Note

With Patrick's help, I set courses for OK Linné's Wednesday Night-O tonight. I made the format be Billygoat-style, where you can skip one control. Here are the courses. I am still wondering what the best skips are...

The race being on Halloween, we provided glowing carved pumpkins at a couple of controls, and tons (8kg, actually!) of candy at the finish. I think people were pleased despite the miserable weather (4C and rain.)

Oh yeah, and:

Running 50:15 [2] 5.91 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

Long warm-up (22 min), cool-down, and jogging between intervals.

Running 13:30 [5] 2.7 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

Intervals on my own on pavement. (90 sec on, 60 off, 45 on, 120 off) x 6. Ran hard. Glad I did these today rather than yesterday - don't think I would have gotten through the set yesterday. Nice, almost warm evening.
