A little bit of knowledge (i.e., knowing the park) was a dangerous thing. On #9, I planned on following the contours instead of dropping down to the trail, to avoid climb. I've been through there many times, and felt it would be easy going. Unfortunately, I ran into some large brush piles that pushed me right, and I ended up coming out by the building at the top of the hill and had to drop back down. If I had dropped down to the trail initially, the climb would have been about the same, but with much faster travel. Then when leaving #17, I decided to stay in the woods instead of taking the trail around. I've been through there, and it's generally pretty easy going. But at night, it was hard to tell exactly where I was, and I got into some slow marsh grass for a bit. Then when I came to the stream at the end of the marsh, I was going to jump over it, but I slipped and landed in the middle of it. As I broke through the 1/4" ice, I ended up with 5-6 painful contusions from mid-shin to just over my knee. I limped slowly the rest of the way to #17 and partway to #18 before I could start to run slowly again.
