Gravel Bike (Pavement) 2:12:00 [3] 46.0 km (20.9 kph)
I went outside my comfort zone today and took part in the local Women's 100 (km) ride, hosted by a bike shop in Windsor. It was totally roadie focused. In fact, the Facebook post advertising it sounded rather intimidating to me. I didn't sign up ahead of time, thinking I may be working today. But hurray! No work for me today! The route included a rest stop at a restaurant within 5k of home, so I figured that if I was dropped or couldn't hack it, I could a) find my way home or b) bail out at the rest stop.
When I went into the shop to register, the woman said, " you have a road bike with you today?". Well, umm, no.....
It wasn't anywhere near the fast pace I was anticipating and we paused to regroup before crossing busy roads. We rode on a couple roads I would usually not ride on, thinking they would be too busy. Yup, they were busy. There are some other route choices that are more bike friendly, IMO. And that isn't including our usual Greenway and gravel roads.
Before we started, the leader told us we are each responsible for our own front wheel, as in don't let it run into someone. Sure enough, at an intersection before the first rest stop, the woman in front of me ran into the woman in front of her and ended up on the pavement (and the woman beside her ended up on her back in the ditch). Only minor road rash was evident.
There was a second rest stop around the 75-80k mark. And we got poured on by a wonderful July rain with about 2k to go.
Needless to say, I had a lot of comments regarding my bike and tire choice (42 mm tires). A couple stretches of the road had new tar and chip on them and so cries of "Gravel ahead" came through the lines and the group moved to the other side of the road to avoid the "gravel". I let out a whoop and said "hurray, gravel!"
It was their first 100k for a few of the riders. I did my first 100k on this day three years ago, inspired by this world-wide event.
