orienteering race 7:39:09 [4] ***

Legend of the Dogman 8 hour rogaine, covering two overlapping 1:15,000 11x17 maps. Very happy with 1750 out of 1900 possible points, and second place overall. Happy to still be running at the finish, albeit slowly, after over 7.5 hours. Ran just about everything except significant uphills and thicker or intense off trail areas. A couple 5 minute errors close to controls, but otherwise a pretty clean effort. More O-nalysis later.

Total distance estimated at 39-40 km (24-25 miles).

The prologue: Controls 1, 2, and 3 were all close to the start and had to be pin punched in any order, then the punch card turned in before you could start for any other controls. This spread out the crowd quite a bit. It was a chilly morning, and I took advantage of this roughly 1.4 km, 12-13 minute jaunt to warm up, dropping off my jacket ad swigging half a bottle of water before setting off for real. It cost a minute or maybe 2 to throw the jacket in the car and chug that extra water, but I believe it was well worth it.

The bonus control. We knew that 2 controls would tell us how to find a special 110 point bonus control; we just didn't know where. The annoying part was having to carry a magnifying glass to read the micro-writing clue, but it proved to be worth it when I got the bonus, which was guarded by a scare-crowish, nattily dressed Dogman - a nice extra touch by the course setter. The bonus was nicely set - from either of the 2 controls with the clues to find it, it didn't really require you to re-think your route strategy, only a few extra minutes of time consumption. Nice that it didn't require you to go halfway across the map, or back to some place you had already been.

Lots of changes to trails and rides - a couple new segments, some old ones have not been mowed (change to minor or indistinct) or allowed to grow completely over.
