Hiking at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Pompey's Pillar National Monument.

About 450 mile driving day from TRNP to the home of Tom Murphy in Bozeman Montana.

Blast from the past when a park ranger saw one of the boys' Flying Pig shirts and said, hey I did that years ago. Turned out to be Bob Hall, who used to be quite an active orienteer. Cool. And what a cool job for an orienteer!

walking 40:00 [1]

Franconia Scultpure Park, Franconia, MN

More driving excitement, first when we hit an absolute wall of water on I-94, dropping visibility instantly to near zero. Pretty scary with traffic blasting in at 75 mph or more, while others came to a total stop. Only lasted a couple miles, but that was more than enough.

(driving Houghton, WI to Theodore Roosevelt NP, ND)
(overnight camp at Cottonwood CG, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND)

beautiful night, enjoyed the northern lights and howling of a coyote pack.

Memory O at Perch Lake, WI - course set by Taiwan Tom. Brennan, Alex, Jamie, Skyler and Jordan all ran with maps, but there weren't enough maps so I decided to try it memory O. Made the first four controls no problem, but got a little confused looking for 5. Grabbed a quick look at Alex's map as he passed, then proceeded to beat him to 5,6,7 before having to stop and wait for him as I had no idea where 8 was located. Another quick look at his map and I beat him to 8, but he caught me on the long run to the finish, and passed me in the final hundred meters, with enough breath to hurl a couple taunts my way as he passed.

This was after an eventful 715 mile driving day, that included being among the first on the scene of a semi roll-over on I 74 in western Indiana. We didn't actually see it happen and 3 or 4 cars had already stopped. I hit 911, handed the phone to the boys and told them to dig out the medical kit them jogged over to the truck. Another man had already climbed up on the cab and was helping the apparently uninjured driver climb out. I helped them climb down. Other than that, just a normal day on the highway. As we pulled out to start on our way again, the first emergency vehicle was just coming into sight. If I'd actually seen the accident, of course I'd have stuck around to make a report, but not having actually seen anything, and with a carload of kids, I figured better to just get out of the way.

Oh yeah, the truck spilled a whole bunch of paint cans, which was all over everything and made a pretty good mess of my shoes, socks and legs. Oh well, it washed off me pretty well (although not the shoes), and apparently wasn't anything toxic or irritating.

Enough of that kind of excitement for a while!

(overnight stop at Taiwan Tom's, Houghton WI)
