orienteering race 1:13:12 [3] *** 5.3 km (13:49 / km)

Tucson - Ironwood. More climb than the previous day, and looking ahead to use the hills and mountains as targets made it easier to stay on a straight line. I still made a major error on one control. And what really peeved me was when I made the exact same error when I went out later to pick up controls. Didn't lose as much time on it then, because I recognized where I was. But I thought I had been really careful on staying on bearing. Figured out later that I turned slightly right to avoid thorny vegetation and didn't correct enough, then turned further right crossing a system of washes with more vegetation, and again did not correct enough back to the left.

This course consisted of 3 loops, visiting a common hub control 3 times. I didn't pay enough attention the first time through the hub and lost at least a minute on it the second time through. I do think that the control circle was slightly off center, though, which contributed since visibility was limited. I passed within about 20 meters of the control, missed it, and had to re-attack from a ramada by the park road. Definitely a case of under-estimating the difficulty on what should have been a very easy control.

This terrain was also rockier in places, and the rougher footing slowed me down on a couple of legs.

orienteering race 22:47 [5] *** 2.5 km (9:07 / km)

A sprint through the desert. Fast running in most places, although cactus-dodging was still a requisite skill. A couple bobbles (4 and 12) each cost me around a minute, but no catastrophic mistakes. The angled north lines on the map were annoying (as on the other maps from the weekend). I think that contributed to at least a couple of my mistakes, although I should have been able to deal with it.

Event: TSN Ironwood

orienteering race 1:40:56 [3] *** 6.6 km (15:18 / km)

Tucson - Ironwood. Spent 40 minutes on one really bad control, actually ran off of the map! Ugh! Otherwise, a pretty clean run. I wasn't the only one who had a bad control, but I probably took the longest to relocate & recover. bummer.

Lost another minute or so on cactus removal when a cholla attached itself to my calf.

Very subtle terrain; "you are in a maze of twisty little ditches, all alike". Many little dry washes, draining southwest across a gently sloping desert area, that rose about 15 meters per kilometer from southwest to northeast. Footing was gravelly and generally not too rough, but constant alertness was required to avoid the omnipresent prickly pear, cholla, and other thorny vegetation. There was enough mesquite and palo verde to make it hard to see contour features at any distance, although a line of green vegetation often indicated a deeper drainage.

Saw a small herd of deer and a rabbit or two, but no javelinas, coyotes or other desert denizens.
