Monday Dec 29, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:44:00 [3] 36.75 km (2:50 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Coldstream wineries route, with two laps of the Maddens Lane/Hill Rd loop, then found a different way back via a couple of hills. Last ride for this trip.

Saturday Dec 27, 2014 #

Running 51:18 [3] 9.0 km (5:42 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Rhyll Inlet trail, with a half-lap of the town to make it over 50 minutes.

Friday Dec 26, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:16:00 [3] 27.1 km (2:48 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Coldstream wineries route, rain and headwind on the return.

Thursday Dec 25, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:09:00 [3] 26.0 km (2:39 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Killara Rd ride by myself. Earlier, JB and I set out at 7.30am, bit different to a Perth Xmas Day ride - 8 degrees and foggy. Fog got worse so we turned around after 10 or so minutes. Had breakfast, then J decided not to ride. Fog had all gone, and it was getting quite warm by the time I got back.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2014 #

Running 42:36 [3] 7.3 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Margaret Lewis Reserve. Another nice morning, after showers yesterday arvo.

Later we walked to Coombe, which was formerly Nellie Melba's home, now a winery and restaurant, with an interesting gallery about Nellie. Didn't try the wines, may go back another day.

Tuesday Dec 23, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:32:00 [3] 32.0 km (2:53 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Healesville back to Coldstream via Yarra Glen. Hilly for first 6km, busy roads after Yarra Glen.

Monday Dec 22, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:52:00 [3] 37.9 km (2:57 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Coldstream to Healesville, partly on the Warburton rail trail. Stopped for a couple of hours at Healesville Sanctuary ( part of Melbourne Zoo), saw two interesting shows - platypus and parrots/birds of prey. Lunch at Giant Steps.

Sunday Dec 21, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:19:00 [3] 26.0 km (3:02 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

From Coldstream, checking first part of route for tomorrow's overnight ear. Hilly again, but the hardest one we go down tomorrow and don't have to climb it again - tough but manageable today.

Running 31:03 [4] 5.6 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Margaret Lewis Reserve, 3 laps at a good pace.

Friday Dec 19, 2014 #

Running 45:03 [3] 7.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Trail run at Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream. Nice morning, but one of those times when light drizzle falls from a mostly blue sky.

Thursday Dec 18, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:17:30 [3] 28.0 km (2:46 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Rolling hills around Coldstream wineries, the quieter and nicer part of the Yarra Valley. Some difficult climbs and good downhills.

Wednesday Dec 17, 2014 #

Orienteering race 24:19 [4] 4.4 km (5:32 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Melbourne street-o at Blackburn. Managed to just beat Asha Steer to the first, then we went different ways. I think our routes were about even, although she might have had an edge on speed. However, I made an error running to a dead end, 1.5-2 mins, during which the Arthur boys passed me, so 4th was the result.

Tuesday Dec 16, 2014 #

Road cycling 2:20:00 [3] 46.0 km (3:03 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Anglesea to Geelong, then Lilydale to Coldstream. Early start after some fruit & yogurt, dull day, threatening to drizzle but not quite managing it. Up the long, long hill out of Anglesea, disappointed to find the anticipated brekkie place closed. Of two possible ways to Geelong we probably picked the wrong one, based on out of date info that did not mention the M1 extension. There was a bike lane, but heaps of very fast traffic making this an unpleasant ride.

Finally made it into Geelong centre after a few adjustments to the guide book route, found a cafe which had excellent coffee (best on the tour) but little in the way of substantial breakfast. It was close to the station, so we made it in time for a morning train to Melbourne with time to buy a couple of sandwiches at the station.

Quick transfer at Southern Cross to a Lilydale train got us there by just after 2pm, then a very scary ride on a busy highway out to Coldstream.

Monday Dec 15, 2014 #

Road cycling 3:09:20 [3] 63.6 km (2:59 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Queenscliff to Anglesea. Started with a visit to Pt Lonsdale, then Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Followed the coastal road which ended with a nice surprise, a new bike path linking Black Rock with the Torquay road. Surprisingly hard to find a decent cafe in Torquay, then we were into the hilly bit around Bells Beach, and a nice downhill into Anglesea, once again earlier than anticipated.

Sunday Dec 14, 2014 #

Road cycling 2:25:00 [3] 51.6 km (2:49 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Start of 3 day ride around the bay. Frankston to Sorrento. Stopped in Mt Martha for breakfast, savoury muffin & fruit toast. Bike lane most of the way, but a 5km section through Mt Martha signed 'Cyclists Single File' where there is a narrow road and no bike lane, so cyclists would actually be safer if they were two abreast. Arrived Sorrento earlier than anticipated, lunched on fruit from IGA then coffee and cake at a nice cafe. Ferry ride uneventful, except the boat was full of Vespa riders on a club ride. Off the ferry to look for our digs, there were hundreds of Harley Davidsons riding around Queenscliff, but they all disappeared after 5.30pm.

Went for a walk and visited the Maritime Museum and the Harbour Tower (great views of Port Philip Bay entrance). Dinner at a nice Asian place with very friendly owner. Great Indonesian meatballs with sticky sauce.

Thursday Dec 11, 2014 #

Road cycling 2:00:00 [3] 32.3 km (3:43 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Around Port Melbourne then down the coast to St Kilda, back via Albert Park where we did a lap of the lake. Slow ride, crowds of pedestrians along Southbank, then detours and slow routes around the port, followed by strong cross/headwind on the bay.

Wednesday Dec 10, 2014 #

Road cycling 3:00:00 [3] 60.0 km (3:00 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

Yarra Trail to Templestowe and back. Slow in lots of places, two sets of long steps, mostly gravel after Kew. Nice setting but terrible coffee at Fairfield Boathouse, better coffee and cheap lunch at a kiosk in Banyule park.

Orienteering race 32:00 [4] 6.0 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Melbourne street-O race at Ivanhoe. Picked the best route, but lost a bit of time at the second because I had the best route to the original control site, but not the amended-on-the-day one. Then lost 2-3 minutes at my 4th due to a poor description - 'top of bank' - when the control was at the foot. Think I came 2nd to one of the Steer girls, and managed to stay ahead of the Arthur boys. Thanks to Bruce for the lift afterwards.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:00:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:05 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

East Melbourne, two bike shops (incl. Warren's) then scouting the Main YarraTrail.

Saturday Dec 6, 2014 #

Orienteering race 17:51 [4] 3.2 km (5:35 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 TrailRoc 255

Short course at Canning Waters Metro. Missed two better routes, probably should have been at least 2 places higher based on running speed. Calf was good, even though I didn't use KT tape today.

Friday Dec 5, 2014 #

Road cycling 2:13:00 [3] 49.4 km (2:42 / km)
shoes: Bike: Bianchi Coast to Coast

River/Coast ride, final test for the Bianchi. Couldn't get compact chain rings, so had a new cassette fitted with some bigger cogs, but not really the same effect, and didn't get to use them much anyway. New spd pedals are a great improvement over the previous expensive Time ones which were very difficult to clip in.

Thursday Dec 4, 2014 #

Running 18:39 [3] 3.2 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 255

Hyde Park.

Wednesday Dec 3, 2014 #

Road cycling 2:14:00 [3] 55.0 km (2:26 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

River-Coast ride incl. Mt Henry bridge.

Monday Dec 1, 2014 #

Road cycling 1:22:00 [3] 33.0 km (2:29 / km)
shoes: Bike: Beemer Auto

Bassendean ride.
