Walking 5:00:00 [3] 15.0 km (20:00 / km)

Attempt to do Tongariro Crossing. Low cloud as we drove up - couldn't see Tongariro or Ngauruhoe, but only the top of Ruapehu was obscured. However, cloud came down as we started, and we were walking in constant drizzle, with a good breeze behind us. At Soda Springs we decided to turn back as people coming down were reporting zero visibility and very strong winds. Rain in our faces going back. Guide then drove us to Whakapapa where we had a coffee and set out to visit Taranaki Falls. Cloud had risen a little on the Ruapehu side, but still couldn't see any sign of Ngauruhoe. Nice walk to a nice spot (as featured in LOTR where Frodo meets Faramir). On the way back out of Whakapapa we also stopped at Tawhai Falls, another nice waterfall.

Shame about missing out on the Crossing - will have to have another go sometime.

Orienteering race 23:43 [4] 2.08 km (11:24 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 2nd pair

Oceania middle distance. Achieved goal of beating Oz team, and finished 3rd. However, 4+ minutes lost in the last 3rd of the course so could easily have been challenging the winner.

Note
(sick)

Sore throat developed this evening. Following day we were told that the day 2 area was the hay fever capital of NZ, so for the next couple of days put it down to that, and running ability wasn't seriously affected. By Monday however a full cold had developed. Ran the sprint on Tuesday, breathing not too badly. By Thursday's long I felt ok to run, but suffered afterwards, and at the relays I forced myself around knowing it was fairly short. Since then the infection has really gone to my chest, and decided to take a rest.

Sunday: very slightly better this evening, hoping it will now clear up over the next few days.

Oceania carnival race 1. Surprised myself by spiking most of the controls and finishing 4th.
