Orienteering race 41:15 [4] 3.8 km (10:51 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 2nd pair

Australian Relays at Borhoney Ghurk. Made a 90 degree error at the start and ended up further from no.1 than the triangle. From then on I was playing catch up, trying to go hard to see if I could move through the field, but inevitably making a couple of errors. Finally caught sight of Victoria, Qld and ACT teams walking up a steep hill to 8, and had almost latched on by the spectator control 9, but I had to stop for a drink, then when I started off again I suddenly felt very tired and had to walk for a bit. Just after I started running again I tripped and fell heavily (another sign of fatigue, not lifting my feet enough). Vic and Qld had disappeared but I just managed to stay close to ACT up the finish chute. Quite surprised that, although SA had skipped out to a 3 minute lead, I was only a couple of minutes behind 6 or 7 other teams.

SA's 2nd runner came in, then after 4-5 minutes ACT gaining several places, and about a minute later Russell C in 3rd. I thought it was entirely possible that Ian F could haul them in, and sure enough he punched the last control about 20m before ACT. He looked tired coming up the chute but just managed to hang on for a one-second win! Fabulous - atones for my mispunch at home in WA last year. Russell was the real hero though - well done!

Note

Appears to be a glitch in AP: it won't let me load the report above with a October 4 date.
