Running 35:00 [3] 2.6 mi (13:28 / mi) +115m 11:50 / mi
CSC Hamsterley Common - Rtd
Slow to #1 but got there without going off the line, just hesitant to not go to far with lots of other controls en route.
2-3-4-5 was good - using compass
Onto 6 and crossed stream on right line, looked for rocks ahead, headed for rocks.
Went past rocks, no pit.
Couldn't see any other rocks in sight
Looked at both contours on map and line of trees to south, so went west (control actually east), then south again.
No sign.
Back to rocks to relocate (which weren't on map), headed north east and thought I'd found right angle in stream (it wasn't, it was just marsh) which meant heading back to where I came from, to again find nothing.
By now cold and chessed off and didn't fancy hacking about through heather for another hour. Eventually dropped down a bit, which made no sense to me as seemed too far east and found control. But 17-18 mins for the leg meant I was probably going to be last, so sacked it off.

So went for a run, though the first mile and a half was just the same as the race as I headed for bridlepath in the SE corner of the map
The followed path NE and east to the finish, arrived same time as Richard, ran back to download with him, then 25 mins out and back in the forest which was the most pleasant part of the day.
Going to have to stop doing any events involving heather, not because it is unpleasant to run through (though that is reason enough really) but the running action required is making my IT flare up very noticably as my right leg swings out to gain enough clearance.
