Chester Round the Walls - 1st

Happy happy days.
An exciting race as thought I had it lost, had it won, had it lost, then found something within myself to get across the line.

Selby parkrun - 2nd, 16.55

Winner 16.51

Struggled for traction early on having put racing flats on after looking at last weeks photos. Closed on leader throughout, but another slippy section at 3k put paid to any hopes of the catch.

Running race 22:31 [5] 4.1 mi (5:30 / mi) +10m 5:27 / mi

Deserter's Dash - 1st, 22:31

Saw Phil had given me a ridiculous handicap of 4:30, so kept my mouth shut and took full advantage. First home by 90seconds. He keeps claiming I'll never get a decent handicap again, but that only happens in the following year, and the year after that he forgets, so that's now my third win...

Round the horseshoe to the East of Lewes
Stunning run up above the low cloud, clear, sunny and frosty.
A delight, even if my legs thought otherwise

Running race 18:44 [5] 3.1 mi (6:03 / mi) +135m 5:19 / mi

Lullingstone parkrun - 3rd, 18:44

Well that time would have won over 90% of the editions of this event.
2 laps, first half mile long drag uphill. Then down, and an out and back mildly undulating but felt worse after the main hill.
Lovely scenery.
Struggled with breathing in the cold air, but sure I wasn't the only one.

Urban Orienteering race 40:50 [5] 5.5 mi (7:25 / mi) +235m 6:33 / mi

Brighton City Race - 2nd, 40.50

Always a great event this, really enjoy this one.
But my word it was tough on the legs.
A bit like parkrun in that you get people flying off at a pace they can't sustain, I was left well back on the beach section.
Should have stuck to my instincts and carried on along the prom but followed onto the beach halfway to #1
Loads of lights everywhere event after the massive drag uphill so no way of knowing whether I was doing well, my feeling was there were people ahead of me and maybe I was racing for 3rd?
Possibly oversimplified the buttefly loops to avoid all the annoying gates - but clearly missed the countouring round route #17-18 and for some reason dropped down and back up.
The final downhill controls let me get some pace up which I was really glad of, but then the crucial moment came when I went the wrong side (N) of the hedge at #27, as speed it looked to me like the circle was centered N of the hedge and didn't check CDs, even then coming from the south I should have seen it but was planning ahead. Then as I reached it, the other chap came flying past with his contactless card and I proceeded to leg it after him, we took different turns to #28 and I got there first, but in a great demonstration of the benefits of new SIAC, he sped straight past whilst I was punching. Caught him up again to #29 but again he shot straight past the control, I (pleasingly, at speed) made the decision to go N then W to give me the chance to cross the road to the N side not at the junction, gave it full sprint but was still beaten by contactless man by the smallest of margins, 2 seconds.

Nothing against contactless technology really but if the event uses it, should be available to hire and I didn't read in the instructions or see on the day they were available to hire. I could easily argue that cost me 90s.

Only complaint is I thought #29 - F was bad planning, to have the finish the far side of a road at (what seemed to be) a busy junction is asking for trouble, certainly on course 1, don't know where the others came from.

The rest was good fun even if I spent the first half crawling uphill!

Running warm up/down 4:00 [2] 0.6 mi (6:40 / mi)

7 PM

Urban Orienteering race 8:50 [4] 1.2 mi (7:22 / mi)

Lanes Super Sprint - 2nd

3rd sob story of the day, had planned simple route #4-5 on widest roads, but consicious of my recent trend to over simplify changed to the direct route via the alleys, but they were far too busy with people to get through, so ended up on a even longer roundabout loop.

Running 30:00 [2] 3.6 mi (8:20 / mi)

Round and round (x6) Menston Park, as roads too icy.

At times like this you question your sanity.
9 PM

Running tempo 17:51 [5] 3.1 mi (5:45 / mi)

Horrible day so took it out on the roads
No warm up so found it tough at first, but the effort level stayed the same as the pace got better.

Urban Orienteering 57:20 [4] 8.3 mi (6:54 / mi) +165m 6:30 / mi

Guiseley Street O

Tricky to get a route covering a reasonable amount of controls, as the gap between Guiseley and Menstonia was a bit of no man's land - I went to Hawksworth basically for variety purposes and tactically could use the downhill to my advantage if late.

Urban Orienteering race 50:10 [4] 7.4 mi (6:47 / mi) +285m 6:03 / mi

Baildon Street O - 2nd

2nd behind Alistair, so no shame there.
Myself and Jack had an entertaining tete a tete for the first 15, including missing a short cut ginnel, then think I got the middle bit better but the SW corner in hindsight could have been a better route, then messed up SW of #7 going to #8, but the map is wrong being fair to myself. All good fun.

Running 1:10:30 [3] 10.2 mi (6:55 / mi) +325m 6:17 / mi

Didn't pace it well, was a lot left in the tank for the last 2 reps, though felt like I was running well, tough session regardless, enjoyed it.

Orienteering 47:30 [1] 4.0 mi (11:53 / mi) +50m 11:26 / mi

Abandoned Middleton Woods after taking 15 minutes to find #1
Seems I was too high up but nothing on the map made much sense to me in that area. Tried to relocate several times but it never seemed I was too high.
Jogged round the rest of the first side of the map with no major issues except passing 7 didn't bother with 6, then just went for a little jog to get into double figures for the day.
Along with fell running I've now retired from middle distance orienteering.

Running race 11:59 [5] 2.05 mi (5:51 / mi) +20m 5:40 / mi

Leeds Uni XC Relays, Leg 1, 11.59

Blown away by mass fast start, but held a steady pace throughout and moved through as a result. Finished strongly. Not in top gear after this morning but all good training. Not as muddy as feared which helped.
3 PM

Running race 12:38 [5] 2.05 mi (6:10 / mi) +20m 5:59 / mi

Leeds Uni XC Relays, Leg 3, 12.38

Doing another leg was something I wasn't up for at all, so set off very conservatively but after a few minutes was running pretty much the same pace as the first leg.

Running warm up/down 13:00 [2] 1.5 mi (8:40 / mi) +10m 8:29 / mi
