Running warm up/down 6:00 [3] 0.75 mi (8:00 / mi)

Urban Orienteering race 23:42 [4] 3.5 mi (6:46 / mi) +15m 6:41 / mi

CLOK Tees Barrage and Riverside Colleges event - 1st, 23:42 (Duncan Archer n/c 22:36 - planner)

Quite a novel area, which I haven't visited despite their being a parkrun there.
Good urban training too
Took a while for legs to get going but first 4 legs straightforward
Lost some time to #5 as overshot past gap in shrubs
Should have gone back over bridge to #8
Think south quicker on long leg to #13 as didn't spot uncrossable fence to east of control 14, but had set off that way
Shale path slowed me down to #18, not sure how that should have been mapped, and very confused to #19 by unmapped fence, but no other issues.

Running race 33:00 [3] 5.0 mi (6:36 / mi) +65m 6:21 / mi

Flat Cap 5 Race - position unknown, 33.00

Wasn't racing this, but did it as is a nice event and decent off road route, so ran it with Mick who is considerably slower than me at present
Took me a mile to catch him after his exuberant start (all uphill too) then enjoyed the rest of the route, nice not to have to push, reminded me of races when I was 16/17 and times didn't have any relevance.
Mick recovered from a bad middle patch and I towed him down the canal in a decent last mile overtaking a few.
Far better conditions than the rain when I came 2nd last year so was only 3 mins 10 slower despite not pushing at all.

Running warm up/down 18:00 [3] 2.5 mi (7:12 / mi)

Running intervals 22:00 [5] 3.5 mi (6:17 / mi)

Track
4 x 600, 4 x 400 all off 200 jog
Bad wind on back straight, felt like January
Solo session as not many down and I had this session in my head to try and improve my 3k time
Worked hard enough, realised after 4 x 200 might have been good at the end, but happy enough with session overall
No idea of times, think was mid 150's and 72 ish, last 400 was 68/69

Running 1:45:06 [3] 14.8 mi (7:06 / mi) +100m 6:57 / mi

Commenwealth Games Marathon Watching
Met up with Deak, Tom, Steve etc, who all apparently had the intention, or so I was told, of running round the course to some degree, backed up by the fact they were in running kit.
Met in the centre of Glasgow by the river, watched men go past.
I wasn't getting the impression people were keen to run, but didn't want to get cold, so went for a loop of the Clyde in gap between men and women, came back and people had coats on. Once women had gone through just set off on the big loop in reverse on my own

Was quite good fun, saw both men and women twice more on the loop, then added some on to cheer Susan home with 5k to go.

Didn't hang around either, felt a million times better than yesterday.

Was a decent course, imagine quite tough as wasn't flat, just gently rolling so a rhythm would have been tough to attain

Running race 17:57 [5] 3.1 mi (5:47 / mi) +50m 5:31 / mi

Nostell Priory parkrun #1, 4th, 17:57

Absolute garbage
Felt fine until halfway, then some guy flew past me, lost my head then my legs. Nearly stopped which is something I never consider.
Had no fight in me to hold onto 2nd, not that I think I could have done anyway. Awful
Pace judgement terrible lately, or there is something physically wrong somewhere.

Running warm up/down 13:03 [2] 1.2 mi (10:53 / mi) +15m 10:28 / mi

Warm down cheering on Charlotte, who had a far better run than I did.

Urban Orienteering race 24:10 [4] 2.8 mi (8:38 / mi) +110m 7:42 / mi

SYO event at Ponderosa - Course 1, 1st, 24:10
Good area, reminiscent of Holt Park in places, but with added (steep!) hills. Hot and legs weren't up to much so just tried to concentrate on navigation.
Lost some time at #3 while I checked I was in the right place despite no flag, then man came out of house to tell me he had removed it, he agreed to put it back.
All went well to #13 when spiral entrance to control completely threw me on way out and had to stop for a fair while to reidentify where I was.
Couple of sub optimal routes after that and the brutal hill at the end finished me off.
All good fun.

Urban Orienteering race 21:10 [3] 2.4 mi (8:49 / mi) +110m 7:43 / mi

SYO Ponderosa Event, Course 2, 3rd 21.52
Decided had enough time to trot round, which was all I could manage really.
Leg 2 was similar to late leg on course 1, funny how you go a different way if approaching from a different direction!
Then went straight from 2-4, miscounted alleyways, so that cost a bit of time, and small errors on a couple of others despite not running fast. Enjoyable.

Running race 15:15 [5] 2.75 mi (5:33 / mi) +30m 5:22 / mi

Golden Acre Relay - Leg 1, 4th, 15:15. Team 1st.

Not sure what to make of this.
It was certainly hard.
And last time I ran this I did 15:58 (has the course changed, did it used to go up the steps? I seem to remember going straight on at the bottom of the steepest hill/boggy bit? But seems not as course record is dated 2006. And conditions were good)
But I looked at the people ahead of me and thought I should have been further forward, and felt tired in places.(very difficult going in/out of shade) so certainly think I could have gone faster.
Who knows? Still struggling with breathing, have got stronger inhaler to start using now.

At least I gave Oz and Walshy something to go at, which they did with aplomb, nice to win something in a team.

Running race 18:57 [5] 3.1 mi (6:07 / mi) +40m 5:53 / mi

Oakwell Hall parkrun #1, 3rd, 18:57
Pissing down.
Slow course, esp in those conditons, not helped by zig zag descent, can't understand why course goes down that and not up it.
Stacked it badly on one sharp corner and ripped skin off right knee.
Was never going to win, but should really have come 2nd, but wasn't feeling like killing myself after the fall. *Really* appreciated the lecture on how to run downhill from said 2nd placer too.

8 PM

Running race 16:34 [5] 3.1 mi (5:21 / mi) +20m 5:14 / mi

Doncaster 5k, 19th, 16:34
Probably a slightly better run than Sale given the course, the heat and the strong breeze but I was certainly hoping to be sub 1630
Set off at what I thought was an easy pace, still ran a 5:09 first mile and wasn't overtaken from there to the end, despite repeating my recent trend of slowing by 10s per mile.
I really need to start holding on in the last mile better but probably need to a touch more fitness too.
The guy from Sheffield I had a ding dong battle with until 4k ran 16:22 so a shame I couldn't keep with him really.
Good race and set up, but don't understand why people think it is a quick course, bit annoying the most twisty bit comes right at the finish, really need to stop getting outsprinted

Running 53:05 [3] 7.0 mi (7:35 / mi) +90m 7:18 / mi

Guiseley station, Yeadon, branch line, top of Hollins Hill **, Hawksworth, back of Highroyds, home. With a fairly heavy bag so pace relaxed.

** run suspended for 35 minutes - bitten by a dog (third time of all time) as I ran past. Confrontation with owner and friend who, as usual were oblivious, and even the sight of the fresh blood on my chest failed to convince them that their precious dog would bite someone. When the claimed the pavement 'wasn't a jogging track' they pushed me into calling the police. They also claimed I had given the dog a shock, good thing I wasn't a child on a bike at the dog's head height then. Funny how different rules govern dogs than other animals, isn't it. After getting cold and wanting to get home, and being assured (obviously, who would admit it) the dog hadn't done this before, I declined to make a formal complaint. But if it happens again in the next 12 months...

Down to Otley to Man the start
11 AM

Running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 0.85 mi (8:14 / mi)

Urban Orienteering 38:10 [5] 5.7 mi (6:42 / mi) +40m 6:33 / mi

Otley Urban - 1st, 37:10

A much better performance.
Only issues were
#1 - slipped on way up bank
#5 - control a bit hidden so faffed about a bit up and down path until I saw it
#6 - Clearly not the optimum route, should have cut through Waitrose and then back of Sainsburys must have slowed me down some. Surprising difference in splits as I really had my foot down! Great leg though.
#7 - Took rough path across grass but it was probably too rough to be of benefit.
#9 - went wrong side of fence, silly avoidable error
#24 - kept on up road, might have been slightly quicker through school but I decided to keep it simple and concentrate on running up the hill

Warm and hard work. But very enjoyable.

9 AM

Running race 17:32 [5] 3.1 mi (5:39 / mi) +30m 5:29 / mi

Fountains Abbey parkrun - 2nd, 17:32
A bit odd and slightly disturbing.
Was going hard but fine but completely fell apart in final mile and struggled home.
Lack of warm up would be an option but wasn't a warm day.
Was in a battle with a guy in a UBOC orienteering top, didn't know who, but assumed he was doing same as me - I got away slightly after 1 lap but he finished very strongly and as mentioned something went wrong for me.
Turns out this was Duncan Birtwistle who is 1 place ahead of me in the rankings (for whatever that is worth!) but he didn't even know about the later races.
76th different parkrun and the most visually stunning, can't recommend it enough, not that tough a course either, despite what my time might the suggest, which makes me more disappointed.

Running warm up/down 7:48 [3] 1.0 mi (7:48 / mi)

11 AM

Running warm up/down 5:00 [3] 0.55 mi (9:06 / mi)

Orienteering race 15:08 [5] 2.1 mi (7:12 / mi) +25m 6:57 / mi

Fat Rascal prologue, Becketts park, 1st, 15:08
Again, a bit strange
S-#8 never felt on top form, but in hindsight was probably doing fairly well.
Think took the shortest route through this, didn't see any other option than out and round 3-4-5 which was a bit dull perhaps. Started to catch Gordon my minute man on way to #7, decided to carry on past #8 to #9 to keep flow going but this is where the trouble started. Didn't notice crossable wall on this route and end of garages and so this slowed me into #9 compared to other route
Then went up steps to #10 which was stupid really.
Big big error to #11, predictably in the wooded section, took larger path to west and didn't realise, ploughing on and through to upper most path at which point realised I was off, had to go along and in from north, but too much nettly stuff so ended up coming in from south as should have done had taken correct route.
Lost 45s compared to Gordon here.
Floored the rest of it pace wise, very slight errors on approach to #12 and #13, missed path into woods for #17 and had to thrash through, then harrassed by vicious dog in woods #18.
So fairly eventful.
Could have been a lot quicker. But there we are, that's the nature of this game.
12 PM

Running warm up/down 7:50 [3] 1.0 mi (7:50 / mi)

1 PM

Running warm up/down 5:20 [3] 0.6 mi (8:53 / mi)

Urban Orienteering race 14:28 [5] 2.2 mi (6:34 / mi) +10m 6:29 / mi

Fat Rascal Final, chasing sprint, 2nd, 14:28

Maintained my tradition of leading the AIRE chasing sprint and messing it up, this year without the excuse it had shifted from urban to terrain.
Catastrophic error to #1, just ran off like a headless chicken, no real idea even now what I was thinking, I remember thinking the start kite was pointing a funny way on the map, think I must have been holding a funny way up.
No excuse though, I have enough running pace to be able to take 5s to get used to where I am and where the first control is, very stupid of me and it cost me big time.
At least I didn't lose my head, despite seeing on my convoluted route to 1 that the chasing pack were already halfway to #3.
2-6 were then OK (how many people cut the dark green kerbs through the car park I wonder?) 7 the undergrowth didn't represent reality so in coming in from the west there was no white gap and I lost time here as I found somewhere suitable to thrash to the control from. Saw Gordon coming out of 8 which helped and caught him on way to 9 but he put a big kick in which really made me suffer! Fine through this section too and overtook another couple back up hill into the campus and could see Ben Stevens ahead, felt I was running out of time but could I catch him. Held up punching at next two which didn't help but into quadrant he was about 30-40m ahead and heading straight for the building site unmarked on the map as too recent. I had remembered you couldn't go this way but I have a lot of sympathy with Ben, especially with it being the end of the course, I don't think it would have been too difficult to put a red line between the buildngs on each map this week really.
Went right and had cut the gap a bit, then left before the steps (by #1) and then cut up through the undergrowth and bushes to left of steps. Seems like some other courses were running opposite way on the path along the top, and someone shouted as I came through 'OUT OF BOUNDS'

Here's a handy hint - DONT SHOUT OUT OF BOUNDS AT PEOPLE UNLESS YOU'RE 100% SURE - it makes you look stupid but it also ruins other peoples races, I had to stop and check for a split second. I'm also disappointed I had enough breath to shout back that it wasn't. Frustrating.
I don't think I would have caught Ben anyway but the gap wasn't very much going into 18, maybe 2 or 3 secs but I had trouble punching and that was the end of that, jogged in from final control.

Hope I do better tomorrow really, I can accept mistake on prologue as a 'racing mistake' but the final error was entirely avoidable and unecessary.

Pool Bank Quarries event - 11th, 32:01

Not orienteered here before.
Pocket map!
Didn't want to push it with race later the same night, and after falling twice on way to #3 and wearing shorts in a rough area, decided to back right off and probably spent 70-75% at walking pace.
Navigation was good, though probably should be by now at walking pace, albeit in unfamiliar surroundings. Still fell twice more, and this was on dry ground.
A massive range of times in the results!

Felt quite low on energy beforehand
Legs were jelly for first 400m, not used to going off this hard.
Was 2nd pretty much all the way round but was aware there was someone behind me.
Felt stronger and stronger the further I went, and for me, had a decent sprint finish.
Ran 4:56 2 years ago but with downhill start and uphill secion halfwat round, but will take 4:47 given not done any sort of speed work.
Maybe next summer will do some before I get too old...

Happy with another step forward, but more in the tank.
Set off steady, felt a bit rubbish first k to be honest, but then started to feel good and moved through the field in 2nd and 3rd k's. 4th k was a grind and it was a case of holding on in the last k but think I over stretched in an effort to relax and probably should have shortened my stride a bit.
