Running 33:16 [2] 3.8 mi (8:45 / mi) +100m 8:06 / mi

Over the Chevin, down ridge end and home. Absolutely goosed. Was really struggling but not surprising must be my biggest 7 day mileage ever I guess.
12 PM

Running 30:00 [3] 4.1 mi (7:19 / mi)

River and Knavesmire - uneventful, and like Tuesday quicker than expected for the effort expended
6 PM

Running 21:36 [4] 2.7 mi (8:00 / mi) +150m 6:49 / mi

Up Carlton Lane and over Chevin to Danefield, at a fair pace as I was late

Orienteering 44:23 [2] 4.1 mi (10:50 / mi) +120m 9:55 / mi

AIRE Vampire O

Just a bit of fun and I was in no mood to take it seriously at all, unlike last year when I got all 25 controls and them vampired with a minute left!

But I decided to run to the furthest point away via 4 controls to get a decent bit of running in, which went well, then I got vampired but decided to go and find my next control anyway, was struggling to find it when Richard appeared, so I took his map knowing he would have got the ones I had. Set off again on my merry way on my preferred route, got to next control and had to give up my map again!

So decided (probably against the spirit of things) to just run round with the vampire map and try and find the controls anyway but not punch them. Which I sort of did, but couldn't be bothered with anything on a steep slope or miles from a path.

After 35 mins decided I better take someones map but there was no one nearby so eventually I had to (?) guiltily take a young kids map and had a burn up to get three more controls.

There was some night trail race also at Danefield starting at 8, which had a fair crowd gathering as we finished, they were willing to pay £8 for the privilege, having said that, Stockport was £10 which I though excessive, especially given they only had 3 EOD maps for course 1. Lots of money changing hands but mainly the same people paying it.

Running 1:06:59 [3] 9.0 mi (7:27 / mi) +180m 7:00 / mi

Ran from Headingley station to Skyrac to meet Oz and we had a pleasant sociable run up past Weetwood and down ring road, back through top of Meanwood and Chapel A and into town where I left him to get train home.
Didn't push the pace at all, though I was nearly dropped on a couple of climbs. Job done today, thats for sure
12 PM

Running 40:33 [4] 6.0 mi (6:46 / mi)

New Earswick loop, extended east to Huntingdon and then south to Heworth.
Legs ruled head here, ended up doing further and faster than I intended once the legs got going. A fair effort given the wind, but a bit silly really.

Tuesday Oct 29, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 29:45 [3] 4.0 mi (7:26 / mi)

Ouse-Millenium Bridge, allotments and Fulford Road.
Absolute cruise, legs much improved, faster than it felt effort wise
7 PM

Urban Orienteering race 59:45 [5] 8.9 mi (6:43 / mi) +80m 6:32 / mi

MDOC Romiley Street O - 1st, 1010 pts (60 min score option)

Really like the format of these events and this one was easy enough to get to being opposite the station and getting there for free meant it wasn't a difficult decision to head over.
Chose 60 over 75 mins in order to get train back at 20:10, but this was enough really.
Very enjoyable, think I chose a decent enough route to rake in a good amount of points, could have started by raking a few more in nr the start but you don't get a feel for the map until 10+ mins in.
Indeed after 48 mins I was convinced I was going to be late, at 54 I was sure I had time for one more, which I did but only after a good solid 600m effort home!

Will try and do a few more of these.

Running 12:00 [3] 1.5 mi (8:00 / mi) +10m 7:50 / mi

Warm Up

Monday Oct 28, 2013 #

6 PM

Running 1:23:40 [3] 11.2 mi (7:28 / mi) +210m 7:04 / mi

Just the one run today, and it wasn't pretty. Felt very low, improved as it went on but had no inclination to go any faster than 7's. Luckily there were other people on the uni 7 at the same pace.

Sunday Oct 27, 2013 #

11 AM

Running 11:40 [3] 1.5 mi (7:47 / mi) +10m 7:37 / mi

Stockport Station to assembly
12 PM

Urban Orienteering race 46:45 [5] 7.2 mi (6:30 / mi) +60m 6:20 / mi

Stockport Urban Race - Course 1, 1st, 46:45

Clean run, pleasing.

Slight error 7-8 by turning too early into dead end but quickly corrected.
Also slight error to 15 wrong side of market hall, compounded by woman shouting at me from bottom of steps for control number! I shouted '15' and ran off - I doubt it was 15 for her.

Otherwise just a case of keeping the legs moving as best as possible, just about managed this, though the several sets of steps were tricky.

Another good map and area, 1st leg was a brute! Most other legs required close map contact which was good, not much dead running at all.
1 PM

Running 10:50 [2] 1.3 mi (8:20 / mi) +40m 7:36 / mi

Back to statio

Saturday Oct 26, 2013 #

8 AM

Running 17:30 [3] 2.2 mi (7:57 / mi) +10m 7:51 / mi

Bury St.Edmunds station to start, past Greene King brewery
9 AM

Running race 17:26 [5] 3.1 mi (5:37 / mi) +30m 5:28 / mi

Bury St.Edmunds parkrun (#53) - 2nd, 17:26

If there's one thing parkrun could improve upon it's the description of the terrain, most just say they are a mixture of terrain, this one was basically a very nice xc course, 90% grass with a bit through woods. Gently undulating, nothing major hill wise but not much flat. Soft underfoot but not too bad.
Usual clowns sprinted off, was in 6th after half a mile. Finished a minute ahead of third! Talented kid won in 16:59, though he did have spikes on to my regular shoes.

Was hanging on grimly by the end, so a good effort and I would say a decent time all told.

Running warm up/down 17:00 [3] 2.4 mi (7:05 / mi)

Back to station
11 AM

Running warm up/down 14:00 [2] 1.9 mi (7:22 / mi)

Cambridge station to start
12 PM

Urban Orienteering race 45:02 [5] 7.2 mi (6:15 / mi)

Cambridge City Race - Course 1, 1st, 45:02

Probably the best urban course of 2013, at least on course 1, but that makes a nice change.

Legs 2-3-4-5 were very good.

Managed to spot the route through the Quads 4-5 and executed this well.
But then made a complete hash of 5-6 by going to 7 instead of 6, by confusing the turnings to the east and running along one too many. A bad mistake really, had to run back round to 6 and back the same way to 7.
Probably cost me 2, more like 2.5 minutes.
But that was only real mistake, and pleased I didn't panic and held the rest of the race together without burning up.

Other notes:
Took lower route out of college to 8 mainly cos it was wider.
Carried on through 9 and into 10 from north
18-19 was a little annoying as the northing line cut through the archway passage which I had a inkling was there but couldn't spot it for sure and cut my losses and went round east. Looking at map now, west might have been quicker in fact.
19-20 went east
21-22 didn't spot route broadly parallel to route line and went north and past bus station.
25-26 Was planning to go north out of the park until the last minute when I sensibly went SW and then north, turning right at 26 to 27.

Overall, a very good area and a very well organised event with results out swiftly.

Walking back I came across the bomb incident which would have blocked my routes 8-9 and 25-26, very unfortunate but I guess little that can be done.

I think that is probably the nopesport league retained, will enjoy the Edinburgh event now!
1 PM

Running warm up/down 8:05 [2] 1.0 mi (8:05 / mi)

Round Jesus green

Friday Oct 25, 2013 #

6 PM

Running 30:00 [2] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Staying in Newmarket so ran from KX to Stoke Newington up Essex Road.
Lovely chilled run - ideal cool evening conditions, worked out perfectly.

Thursday Oct 24, 2013 #

Running 1:09:17 [3] 9.0 mi (7:42 / mi) +165m 7:17 / mi

Headtorch run with Matt round the Chevin.
Steady pace on roads, then v.easy off road, turned pace back on after Matt turned off on the 2 mile stretch home. Enjoyable. A little tired by the end.
12 PM

Running 32:00 [3] 4.9 mi (6:32 / mi)

Wandering round the eastside of York.
Pace gradaully increased from 7:30 to 6:00 and feeling good with it.

Wednesday Oct 23, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 39:00 [3] 5.3 mi (7:21 / mi)

New Earswick loop clockwise
Took an age, at least 10 mins to get going, but then slipped into a nice comfortable pace despite strong crosswind throughout
6 PM

Running warm up/down 11:40 [3] 1.4 mi (8:20 / mi) +20m 7:59 / mi

Station to Jennyfield

Urban Orienteering 45:55 [4] 7.3 mi (6:17 / mi) +120m 5:59 / mi

CLARO Street O, Jennyfield, Harrogate
Open O Line Map
First time on a line map since last winter and was pretty rusty, did not take optimum route in a few places. Loops were possible in a number of places but I didn't quite get them right, a fair few out and backs too.
Good housing area, many paths not on the map and so the full sprint map should be interesting next summer, look forward to it.
Got 25/30 in 55 secs over time, so getting the last one was pointless (literally!) but worth a go and a final effort.
Moving well in the low 6 area apart from a toilet break, could have pushed a bit more but was keeping my eye on the map a bit too much possibly. Good fun. May head to Romiley on Tuesday
7 PM

Urban Orienteering 8:10 [3] 1.0 mi (8:10 / mi)

Warm down with Richard F checking a couple of paths not on the map

Tuesday Oct 22, 2013 #

Running 30:30 [3] 4.0 mi (7:38 / mi) +30m 7:27 / mi

Football tonight, which doesn't look like being pleasant. This run was not pleasant.

Running 1:11:01 [3] 10.1 mi (7:02 / mi) +75m 6:52 / mi

Uni 7 with 2mi before and 1 after
Felt pretty tired but battled through
Was tempted to do more but brain kicked in and said this wasn't sensible
1 PM

Running 27:55 [3] 4.0 mi (6:59 / mi) +10m 6:56 / mi

TA barracks and uni campus run, felt good prob due to new trainers and wanting to get out of rain so pushed on. Hope this stops by tonight...

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [3] 2.2 mi (9:05 / mi) +40m 8:36 / mi

1 PM

Orienteering 1:24:35 [3] 8.99 mi (9:25 / mi) +350m 8:24 / mi

CSC Final, Brown, 30th= / 79

The slow slow progress continues.
Happy enough,no disasters, could have been better though, as always.
1 - straightforward enough
2 - down the road was obviously the way to go for me, held a gear back though as pessimisstically assumed after yday Id be out for approaching 2 hours.
3 - nailed this one
4 - turned in too early, realised pretty quickly but then didn't go far enough in off correct path
5 - A right shambles, very annoying. (probably overconfidently) decided to go staight for control as was coming in from south. Came across a pit which I'm convinced wasn;t on the map as the control should have been easy to spot from there which it wasn't. Got caught in some very thick brambles, so only thing for it was to exit south and go back round north which led me correctly to the control which I don't believe I was near when next to aforementioned pit
6 - Came wrong way out of 5 and got trapped by rough stuff, had to retrace steps. Bit scrappy on top but didn't take long to suss/
7 - went west and then paths to north, but took a wrong turn after crossing road and passing house, followed fence line which took me right when needed to go straight. Soon realised and hit control well when got there.
8,9,10,11 - All decent
12 - went too far up slope and not far enough along, distracted by presence of others.
13 - failed to come out on correct part of path and by turning right when I hit it, actually was going wrong way. A stupid mistake.
14 - Pleased to realise where control was and ignore all the people scrambling around in the wrong place or looking for another control which I wouldnt have done before
15 - went to far north via road and track, aiming to go south of pond but path never petered out so ended up going north of it but not a problem, drove up hill, legs hurting a lot
16 - train going to this one
17 18 - straightforward, just a case of keeping moving.

Running warm up/down 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +100m 7:25 / mi

To/from parkrun
9 AM

Running race 18:32 [5] 3.1 mi (5:59 / mi) +10m 5:55 / mi

Forest of Dean parkrun (#52) - 1st, 18:32

Not a great run, despite an array of mitigating factors, including lack of grip, and a total uncertainty of the route once I'd pulled clear and turned right at an arrow pointing right that should actually have been pointing left. Luckily I got called back. Then there was the marshall who tried to send me on a third lap, and the blue arrows that disappeared half way round. Never mind.
Very humid in the forest, nice enough course and I should have been faster
1 PM

Running warm up/down 17:00 [2] 2.0 mi (8:30 / mi) +40m 8:00 / mi

Orienteering race 1:02:36 [3] 5.2 mi (12:02 / mi) +120m 11:14 / mi

NGOC warm up event, Parkend
I'm not normally one to comment on the quality of maps as I don't know what I'm talking about but even I could tell this one wasn't the best when I came across rides before the bend in the tree boundary on the way to 1 which threw me before I decided to take no notice of them on the map.
Overall couldn't motivate myself to push, concentrated on going the right way, even used the compass a few times. Therefore I was there or there abouts for most controls just not nailing them close up. Very scratty woodland, not my cup of tea at all, but ideal for others I guess.

Friday Oct 18, 2013 #

7 PM

Running 36:44 [3] 5.4 mi (6:48 / mi) +250m 5:57 / mi

Arrived at Braceland bunkbarn for CSC weekend having still not run so arranged to run through forest with headtorch to pub at Staunton where Richard was driving. Only two miles so would have to do extra to do something decent.
Set off, forest obv. v. dark but I hit the 'main' track which would take me to Staunton. Bit of a drop but was unconcerned when started to go up again...and up...and up. Hit a road after 2.2mi, except it was the road 100m from the road into Braceland, basically I'd done a big U, having missed the turn off, not that I saw it at all. Cut losses and nailed it down the A road to Staunton, pretty hairy in the wind rain and dark but not too many cars coming at me. Reached pub where RF signalled food was available to 9pm so did another 7 mins as feeling good now legs were moving fast.

Thursday Oct 17, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 30:55 [3] 4.1 mi (7:32 / mi) +20m 7:26 / mi

Through the 'eye' and west park, then Knavesmire and west bank of river.
Not feeling too bouncy but could have been worse.
5 PM

Running 53:36 [4] 8.0 mi (6:42 / mi) +20m 6:39 / mi

On way back to York station came up with plan of getting off at Garforth and running across to Woodlesford to get 18:12 into Leeds, allowing me to get home at a decent time for the first time this week. Also allowed a run in daylight, with the incentive it would had to be at a decent pace to get there, which is what was required. Except for having to run with rucksack, all worked perfectly. Easy first mile at 7:30, then progressed from 6:50's down to 6:20's comfortably and made the train with a minute to spare. Nice flat route down disused railway then the Aire, and then the Aire&Calder. Decent stuff.

Wednesday Oct 16, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 28:56 [3] 4.0 mi (7:14 / mi) +20m 7:07 / mi

Round NW area of York, nice and relaxed, just about beat the afternoon downpour
6 PM

Running 1:17:17 [2] 9.2 mi (8:24 / mi) +165m 7:57 / mi

Ran to Leon R's pre poker (2.5mi) for a headtorch run down through Esholt and sewage works, down on canal, back through village and woods again. Very pleasant and sociable, easy pace off road, moving well on canal. Need to turn headtorch brightness up, where's the manual?

Tuesday Oct 15, 2013 #

7 PM

Running 1:13:31 [3] 10.7 mi (6:52 / mi) +100m 6:41 / mi

LCAC Track Session - 12 * 70secs on, 50 secs off
Good session, certainly the best session of this type I've done.
Thought I'd overcooked it early on but managed to keep consistently over 390m and approaching the full 400 on most occasions and to keep moving on the recoveries. Decent group helped, was trying to stay relaxed and in touch to 300m and working hard down the home straight.

Usual warm up and down to and from station

Monday Oct 14, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 32:30 [3] 4.5 mi (7:13 / mi)

Round York, back to the grind. Legs felt good, quite bouncy no doubt helped by new trainers. Bit windy but not too cold.
6 PM

Running 57:17 [3] 7.89 mi (7:16 / mi) +180m 6:47 / mi

University 7 with Mick Hill amongst others, who spent the whole time reminicising about how himself, Deakin, Buckley etc used to hammer this run every week and a guy called Phoenix ran his 10k pb on it.
Controversially apparently the old route went straight on at the Library and turned right after Parky steps. (we did this) Who knew? And which person first turned right. At least that makes it almost seven but I can't see it catching on.
Felt like I was absolutely jogging along so the pace was a nice suprise.
More and more wheely bins seem to line the route, maybe the bin day of LS6 is now Monday. Or Tuesday.

Sunday Oct 13, 2013 #

6 AM

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +40m 7:46 / mi

Final warm run, v.early start due to leaving for airport but had to get it done.
Couldn't get legs going at all, but weather was lovely and cool.

Saturday Oct 12, 2013 #

9 AM

Running 32:45 [3] 4.6 mi (7:07 / mi) +80m 6:45 / mi

Morning Moni loop road first, bit of trouble finding trail to come back, forgot it was a road at first in that direction. Not overly hot, but warm enough. Moving fairly well, though inclines were a test. Going to miss this warm weather!
4 PM

Cycling 35:13 [3] 7.8 mi (4:31 / mi) +460m 3:49 / mi

Taking the bike back to the bike shop
Up the 2 mile climb up the main road, drop into Agosta, then the mountain road over to Kalvasanos. Spectacular road. Was working hard up the hill with the heat beating down but cruised over the rest taking in the views.
5 PM

Running 51:55 [4] 7.5 mi (6:55 / mi) +510m 5:43 / mi

And then the run back to the villa
2 miles uphill, got into it as climbs mainly gentle and sweeping bends.
1 mile down
1.5 uphill absolute killer, really tough wanted to stop from halfway up but ground it out.
2.5 downhill, let go of the legs and was moving fast.
Bit shattered at the end! Helpfully much of it in the shade.

Friday Oct 11, 2013 #

10 AM

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

By the time I'd stirred myself it was bloody roasting and so I decided to take advantage of the treadmill.
Took a while to figure out how to use it, before I found the safety magnet.
Then it wouldn't go fast enough, peaking at 12-kph.
But it still was tough enough really, suprisingly.
Might run a bit further tonight, might not, see how I feel.

75th day consecutive running :-)

Thursday Oct 10, 2013 #

8 AM

Cycling 5:36:03 [4] 79.4 mi (4:14 / mi) +3600m 3:43 / mi

Group ride up Mount Olympus to Trodos, where we had lunch and then back down, 38mi to the top, 1725m up. Was vetoed from doing the final 2.5mi/200m to the actual top of Mount Olympus by the others.
Still a bloody epic 10mi climb to the top from 600m altitude to the top, thought I was doing well and riding within myself but then the last 3 miles were brutal and I nearly fell off at the top. Struggling to hold the handlebars due to amount of sweat dripping from me.
There was also a 4 mile climb after 7 miles which was tough, then it was undulating, with an especially bizarre road comprising brilliant sweeping bends with unsurfaced bits.
Way down was mostly a cruise but pushed it with Greenleaf where required and the last 5miles back to the villa buried myself.
Highest I've been on a bike and most climbing in a day.
5 PM

Running 28:30 [4] 4.1 mi (6:57 / mi) +70m 6:36 / mi

20 minutes rest and thought I better get out for a run.
2 miles on the trails nearby and back on the road.
Actually felt better than yesterday but climb back to the villa was tough and couldn't contemplate any more.
Hardcore day.

Wednesday Oct 9, 2013 #

5 PM

Running 31:01 [3] 4.2 mi (7:23 / mi) +100m 6:53 / mi

Needed a lie in today, and then it was off to the water park for the day.
Got the guys to drop me off at the motorway junction and ran in from there.
Legs felt horrific first 20 minutes and although eased after that, made the decision to not do more than half an hour, with big bike ride and small run planned tomorrow. Could have carried on I guess, but would have not been of much benefit I think

Tuesday Oct 8, 2013 #

9 AM

Cycling 4:28:13 [3] 75.9 mi (3:32 / mi) +1030m 3:23 / mi

Group cycle to Pissouri and back.
First hour was a faff many traffic lights through Limassol and trying to find a bike shop, so to get the ave speed up to 17mph after that was a decent effort.
Some great sweeping hills after Limassol in both directions and of course, a climb involving a series of hairpins to lunch, as always. Was working very hard in places. Did a stretch of TTT at 25mph at the front, tough job. Very hot in the afternoon.
5 PM

Running 25:45 [5] 4.0 mi (6:26 / mi) +50m 6:12 / mi

Had to get a run in, and Greenleaf joined me, so the pace was unnaturally high. Was really hanging on by end, when he went off on a other lap! Delighted to get such quality in after bike ride.

Monday Oct 7, 2013 #

6 AM

Running 1:01:19 [3] 8.0 mi (7:40 / mi) +250m 6:59 / mi

Straight from wedding lunch to Heathrow, overnight flight, 1 hours sleep on plane, picked up and taken to villa where the guys were waiting to go on a morning run.
Myself Steve and Paddy left Greenleaf to blitz his own run and set off on the trails to the north.
Having turned around and retraced our steps, Steve bailed and shortly after Martin turned back.
Somehow I was still in one piece and feeling alright so myself and Paddy did an hour which was good going considering and a good start to the week.
6 PM

Running 32:20 [3] 4.3 mi (7:31 / mi)

Myself and Paddy knocked out another run before sunset on the local roads, a bit flatter than this morning, a bit faster and feeling a bit better. Still not slept!

Sunday Oct 6, 2013 #

10 AM

Running 38:51 [3] 4.8 mi (8:06 / mi) +65m 7:46 / mi

Wine hangover. Emotional hangover.
Myself, Matt and Gricey ran round some fields and estates. It was alright really considering. Good convo on the way round. Highlight was the mad cows chasing us out of one field.
Now, to Cyprus

Saturday Oct 5, 2013 #

9 AM

Running 56:19 [3] 7.1 mi (7:56 / mi)

Staying in the pub at Crookham, Northumberland, so after a few pints the night before, myself and Sarah G went for a run round Flodden Field and Flodden Hill, taking in the battlefield and historical sites. Lovely morning, very pleasant run, mainly off road. An eventful day after this...

Thursday Oct 3, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 31:30 [3] 4.5 mi (7:00 / mi) +10m 6:57 / mi

Extended river south run, to end of west bank path and over to the east bank, back on Fulford Rd. Slowly cranked pace up as feeling good, and couldn't be bothered just trotting along.
7 PM

Running 1:03:35 [3] 8.0 mi (7:57 / mi) +270m 7:12 / mi

First headtorch run of the autumn, took some getting used to.
Railway path down to Otley, birdcage walk, up East Chevin road, along lower path across Chevin forest, then up and over to Carlton Lane, then off road again all the way back to Menston other side of Chevin top.
Felt pretty decent again.
Once away from street lights and near woods on Chevin, visibility was nearly nil, which was a bit crazy and slowed me somewhat, nearly ran off path several times, stood still for about a minute trying to see if what I thought was the path to the top was the actual path. Cleared once I escaped the trees.
Only stacked it once, which could have been more serious than it was.
Took a stupid route back home, won't be doing that again in the dark.

Run from Kirkstall into town on canal, up to Hyde park and around, back through Burley, first 6mi with Oz, Tom and Susan, quite a relaxed pace and sociable. Felt like I had a lot in the tank at the end which was good.

Just the one run today, from Sandal and Agbrigg station, through Walton into Haw Park, then the Barnsley canal path, back on the old Midland Railway path to Newmillar Dam and then on the roads.
Was targeting a trio of Strava segments, 0.6m, 0.5m and 1.7m long, the first two easy enough but the latter was average pace of 5:36 which didn't feel up to at first but once I dipped under this pace managed to hold it fairly comfortably, however I effectively combined the 0.5 and 1.7 into a 13 minute effort as I hadn't really fully clocked what was going on with the segments, was envisaging the path ending so just had to keep going until it did.
Cracking route and area to run in, feeling good.
