8 AM

Running 24:20 [2] 3.1 mi (7:51 / mi)

12 very hungover men set off down the main road out of central Oxford to the ring road, just over 3 miles. Quite a memorable warm up. Quite an impressive effort to get going, but not as impressive as...
9 AM

Running race 17:03 [5] 3.1 mi (5:30 / mi) +10m 5:27 / mi

Oxford parkrun, 5th, 17:03.
Well I was never going to win with McMullan and Greenleaf in attendance, and I seriously considered jogging round, but my legs felt quite good, compared to my upper body, dead from the waist up, you might say.
Settled into 7th behind Richard Phillips, Hugh Torry, Jonathan Henderson and some young kid, decent runners all. Managed to cling on throughout, desptie every increasing dehydration and general pain, and took the young kid and Henderson around the end of the lap, caught up to Torry on the second lap but he got a gap up the hill which I couldn't quite close again.
Quite a performance by all concerned, first 7 places for the Stag Do. Happy to be within 30 seconds of Greenleaf and this was probably a good as performance as I've had in a parkrun for about 6 weeks.
The Stag finally rolled in outside 20 mins, claiming he couldn't see through his Morph suit.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

Stagger back into Oxford via M&S for some hydration. Torry and Greenleaf thought they were still in a race.

Friday Aug 30, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 31:55 [4] 4.55 mi (7:01 / mi) +10m 6:58 / mi

Round the Knavesmire
Stepped it up to 6:30s once I hit the racecourse, which didn't hurt as much as I thought it would.
300 miles for August - job done.

Thursday Aug 29, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 38:36 [3] 5.0 mi (7:43 / mi)

Through Bootham Hospital, cycle path past chocolate factory and back down the Foss. First and last mile horrible, middle OK which means I managed to get through it.
7 PM

Running 1:20:33 [3] 10.0 mi (8:03 / mi) +310m 7:21 / mi

Burley Ben Rhydding via farms, up to Cow and Calf, back across golf course, Burley woodhead and dalesway.
Never felt too tired but didn't push, a bit low on energy understandably.
Dealt with climb pretty well.
Nice clear cool evening but was pretty dark by the end, autumn is approaching.
51 miles in 3 days, anyone who manages a three figure week is either unemployed or a lunatic. I don't often give myself a pat on the back but once I've done tomorrow's run, a liquid pat on the back will be well earned.

Note

I am not happy if you hover over my name it says I'm 30!

I am not 30 for a good 4 months thank you Attackpoint! I don't need reminding...
12 PM

Running 37:43 [3] 5.0 mi (7:33 / mi) +10m 7:30 / mi

A new loop through Heworth.
Thought this would be a plod after yesterday but it wasn't too bad, was able to keep moving forward at a steady pace
6 PM

Running 1:33:26 [3] 11.2 mi (8:21 / mi) +270m 7:46 / mi

Recce of LCW Leg 4 first half with Matt. Ran out to start from Horsforth station via shortest route, ie. ring road, so not v.pleasant.
Nice enough run, not very fast but I didn't want it to be, it didn't need to be either. Had heavy bag on too. Struggled on any hill as it was. This looks a tougher leg than the only one I've done (3), not that I'm running Sunday.

Tuesday Aug 27, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 36:30 [3] 4.9 mi (7:27 / mi) +20m 7:21 / mi

Out to Rawcliffe Meadows on river and back on A road.
Again felt pretty relaxed and moving well around 7's once got going.
6 PM

Running 1:44:45 [4] 15.1 mi (6:56 / mi) +30m 6:54 / mi

York to Selby down the Old ECML
Needed to put a long run in to get closer to my goal of 300miles in 30 days by Friday due to lower milage either side of 10k.
So this route was ideal and hadn't done it yet from York.
Eased into it, and as always pace naturally lowered itself, so by halfway, my thoughts turned to doing 15 in an average of under 7 min miles, this required the remaining 7 miles to be <6:40 which was a big ask really but I found myself doing it, and by 12 feeling quite tried. But dug in and got it done, pretty knackered by end. How did I run a marathon at 6:10's???
Pleased with the effort though.
Route gets pretty horrible once it joins the A19 so maybe restrict to out and back on old railway in future, and enjoy the scale model of the Solar System, a great idea, and a real eye opener when I ran obliviously past Mercury Venus and Earth in the first 500m and then ran nearly 2 miles between Saturn and Uranus!!

Monday Aug 26, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 36:40 [3] 5.0 mi (7:20 / mi) +10m 7:17 / mi

Out and back along the Foss. Felt pretty good for day after a race, pace picked up, helped that it was warm.

Sunday Aug 25, 2013 #

10 AM

Running warm up/down 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +15m 7:54 / mi

Warm up/warm down. Got stuck on wrong side of canal on warm down
11 AM

Running race 35:15 [5] 6.25 mi (5:38 / mi) +30m 5:33 / mi

Ellesmere 10k - 13th, 35:15
Quite a disappointment.
Thought I was easily in sub 34 shape, and if worst came to the worst, 34:30 ish. So to be outside 35 is a blow.
First mile, spot on, 5:19.
A large group of the runners from 3rd to 11th had formed about 50m up the road, through to mile 2 thought I'd missed the boat there but the gap grew and it's probably a good thing I didn't get on board or things would have got very messy.
For a 'flat' course, the first 5k was gradual climbing, nothing of note but at race pace it did wear me down, and by the 4k marker things were hurting. Decided to work hard to 5k which was the top, 17:22. Not a disaster I thought, can get some of the time back now the rest of the course is flat & downhill.
One guy coming back to me, so focused on him.
But it never really happened in the second half, all that appears to have happened is that it got harder and harder and I slowed a bit.
Most of 2nd half was trail, round mere and along canal but well packed stuff. Can't complain at effort, really gave it everything.
With 2k to go, I was caught from behind, dug in some more and managed to stay with him up to 9k, a couple guys ahead now as the group exploded ahead, but the little climb off the canal really felt like Everest. Pushed onto the finish field but once I saw the finish clock said 35xx then I had enough really.
Not going to let this get me down, plenty of mitigating factors, a humid day, I have been putting plenty of training in, and haven't run 10k for a while. Race wise I went off at the right pace, so just need to keep it together. On the other hand, rather daunting to think I have, and am looking to, run 2 minutes quicker. Doesn't look like anyone had a flyer really.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.8 mi (8:20 / mi) +20m 8:03 / mi

9 AM

Running 19:55 [3] 3.1 mi (6:25 / mi) +40m 6:11 / mi

Rotherham parkrun, 2nd 19:55
Just jogged round, managed to resist the urge to get after 1st but did pull away from 3rd at the end. Small event, very nice.

Course toughness - 7
Course scenery - 7

Friday Aug 23, 2013 #

7 PM

Running 28:38 [2] 3.55 mi (8:04 / mi) +40m 7:48 / mi

Got home before 22.30 for the first time this week.
Of course, as I soon as I set out, the thunderstorm started.
I can confirm it is difficult to run slowly in a thunderstorm.
But kept pace down for the most part, felt very tired but to be expected.
Loop round via station and private drive, back on Dalesway link. Nice.

Thursday Aug 22, 2013 #

6 PM

Running 52:10 [3] 7.0 mi (7:27 / mi) +30m 7:21 / mi

Conisborough to Wath on Dearne along the Transpennine trail with a fairly heavy bag. At 7 miles, longer than the 5 I had roughly estimated! Fairly warm, pleasant evening. Had to avoid some very fast mountain bikers early on or would have been in trouble! Good exercise in trying to work out which bits were old railway. Rather annoying diversion half way along, where path doesn't continue down river, must be private but not an impossibility. Run went quickly and the area as a whole worth exploring more, especially at each end.

Wednesday Aug 21, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 29:50 [3] 4.0 mi (7:28 / mi) +10m 7:24 / mi

Out and back down the river southwards. Took it easy but still ended up <7:10/mile which is a good sign.
6 PM

Running 1:23:40 [3] 10.0 mi (8:22 / mi) +40m 8:16 / mi

From Crossgates station to Roundhay, met with Richard, lap of lake, across golf course, eventually met Pete and round the park again. Good to have company, nice evening, good route. Was feeling very tired by the end even at slow pace, 50m in 4 days, time to ease off for Sunday's 10k. But things have gone well so far this month.

Tuesday Aug 20, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 30:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi) +10m 7:27 / mi

Out and back Ouse west bank northbound
On paper due to do something faster and harder but no chance that was happening
7 PM

Running 50:01 [3] 6.5 mi (7:42 / mi) +110m 7:19 / mi

4.5 before massage at SLS from station and round Middleton woods.
2 back to station. Just ticking along. 2 thirds through my August effort but will have to ease off for Sunday shortly

Monday Aug 19, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 46:21 [3] 6.0 mi (7:44 / mi) +10m 7:41 / mi

A new lunchtime route out to New Earswick and back in order to motivate myself to do 6. Quite nice.
Delightful encounter with a grey cat.
7 PM

Running 44:49 [3] 5.5 mi (8:09 / mi) +180m 7:24 / mi

Great loop round the (closed) Yorkshire Sculpture park with Mick and his dogs. Lovely running, must return. After feeling a bit tired at lunch, and absolutely knackered after finishing work, I expected this to be a slog but soon perked up thankfully

Sunday Aug 18, 2013 #

2 PM

Running 1:44:45 [3] 14.0 mi (7:29 / mi) +180m 7:12 / mi

First 6 miles same as last week, then a 1 mile slog uphill all the way to Rawdon, then Yeadon, Tarn, Guiseley, home.
Felt pretty decent, not quite as good as last week but no issues.
Kept fairly relaxed, last 2/3 miles were a bit uncomfortable as I was so thirsty.
All set for 15mile Sunday runs from next month anyway.

Saturday Aug 17, 2013 #

8 AM

Running warm up/down 15:45 [2] 2.0 mi (7:52 / mi) +30m 7:31 / mi

9 AM

Running race 17:50 [5] 3.1 mi (5:45 / mi) +30m 5:35 / mi

Bolton parkrun - 1st, 17:50
Another tough course! Big hill on each lap x2.
Either I read the course description wrong or it's wrong on the website, nearly went wrong twice as In my mind the out and back section was sandwiched by the two laps when in reality it was at the end. Was in 2nd until the 2nd hill by a fair bit but pulled away to win comfortably in the end. Felt fairly strong but not too quick but that will come. Nice start and finish on the track, another track I have run on now!

Course difficulty - 8.5
Scenery - 7.5

Running warm up/down 16:05 [3] 2.1 mi (7:39 / mi) +15m 7:29 / mi

Friday Aug 16, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 33:10 [3] 4.5 mi (7:22 / mi) +20m 7:16 / mi

Hob Moor loop. Once I got going - fine. Bit blowy out there.
6 PM

Running 29:10 [3] 4.0 mi (7:18 / mi)

Guiseley to Burley for a well earned pint after a long week. All downhill so moving nicely

Thursday Aug 15, 2013 #

7 PM

Running 1:12:41 [3] 8.5 mi (8:33 / mi) +260m 7:49 / mi

Had planned a double day, but forgot to take a T-shirt to work.
Considered running topless but too many people taking photos in York...

Anyway, myself, Pete, Dave and Leon managed to meet up successfully this time and did a nice lap of Buck Wood via Esholt.
Legs felt fine at this pace but the run was a struggle felt empty and low, humidity really got to me. Just wanted to stop for a lie down. Roll on winter (I don't mean that)

Wednesday Aug 14, 2013 #

7 PM

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi) +10m 7:54 / mi

Running race 33:28 [5] 6.0 mi (5:35 / mi) +55m 5:25 / mi

Saddleworth 6 - 6th - 33:58
A 'classic' race that I decided I'd have a crack at before it disappears under red tape and H&S, though I hope not.
Millennium Bridge 5k half a mile from the office as well tonight, but I'm not doing that race after the events of last year, when 15 people overtook me by taking a short cut and the organisers a) ballsed up, and b) responded with a shrug of the shoulders.
Damp conditions.
Plan was to stay relaxed on the first lap of two and work hard on the second lap. Pretty much did that. Was in 8th straight away, then up first short sharp hill got into 7th. Lead two were away, then a group of three, then me and a couple of others.
Slightly down hill, and me and one guy pulled away slightly. We then came to the big hill (not big by off road standards but in a road race at sub<5:30 pace it felt big) and we got away a bit more, I tucked in behind as the guy pushed on. Now starting to feel hard, but felt strong. We overtook one guy from ahead who was going backwards.
Towards end of lap pace slowed a little so I took up the reins and onto the second lap, the first hill was hard work and my friend pulled alongside, we were then stride for stride until the 2nd hill when he got about 15m on me, I decided to push off the top rather than up the hill. Not sure whether this worked. I could hear someone behind me now which helped push me on, though I wasn't closing ahead, as the guy in front closed on 4th also. Managed to stetch out on the slight downhill and managed to close in, could no longer hear anyone behind me now. Into the final mile and I caught my man again, decided to go straight past, felt pretty good, but as we approached the final turn, he had a few shouts and drew alongside. 400m finish straight, we were neck and neck really winding it up, but with 100m left my legs went and that was that. Went with too far to go.
Encouraging for Ellesmere 10k next week, decent race.
8 PM

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 1.5 mi (8:00 / mi) +10m 7:50 / mi

Down the Huddersfield narrow canal

Tuesday Aug 13, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 32:00 [2] 4.32 mi (7:24 / mi) +20m 7:18 / mi

North along river, through Holgate and onto Hob Moor, back up to Centre.
Felt very slow to begin with. Kept it very relaxed
7 PM

Running 47:41 [2] 5.4 mi (8:50 / mi) +45m 8:36 / mi

A very slow run with Mick and his dogs from Woodlesford station around Water Haigh park and surrounds on LCW. Painfully slow in places, bad as that sounds. But I'd rather have company than run faster and alone, knowing that those faster solo runs take care of themselves anyway. Lovely evening.

Monday Aug 12, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 29:40 [3] 4.05 mi (7:19 / mi) +10m 7:16 / mi

Fulford Allotments loop, a bit windy, legs didn't feel too bad after a sluggish start
6 PM

Running 1:20:00 [3] 10.2 mi (7:51 / mi) +270m 7:15 / mi

Menston Guiseley Yeadon Chevin Menston
Most of it with Dave and Pete
Was meant to be with Leon too but we managed to not meet him as planned.
Then we lost Dave in Yeadon, but found him again up Carlton way.
Nice run overall, didn't plan to do 10 but that was a bonus.

Sunday Aug 11, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 1:26:24 [3] 12.6 mi (6:51 / mi) +60m 6:45 / mi

Decided to run to Leeds via Esholt woods, Aire path, and canal from Newlay Bridge.
Helped being downhill and the wind behind, but legs felt great today and full of running, could have knocked out a 20miler had I fancied it.
Instead that will do nicely, decent pace, good route, will repeat but probably not in the depths of winter when it could be a tad slippery.

Saturday Aug 10, 2013 #

8 AM

Running warm up/down 21:30 [1] 2.25 mi (9:33 / mi) +10m 9:26 / mi

9 AM

Running race 18:38 [5] 3.1 mi (6:01 / mi) +70m 5:37 / mi

Cuerden Valley parkrun, 4th, 18:38
Inaugural event
Bloody hilly course
1st shot off, didn't see him again.
Up first hill in 2nd, up the 2nd hill I knew this was going to be a slog.
Could hear guy behind me closing in, so tried to work hard on the flat and the downs to stay away, but he caught me half way round the 2nd (&last) lap.
Closed on him down the hill but then we turned off the lap and up a 400m long hill to the finish at which point my legs said no, swiftly followed by my head, and I was overtaken again with 100m to go. Virtually walked in, not my finest hour.
Nice park and all that, but can't see many people becoming regulars at this one, too tough, unless you're a fell running person that is.

Scenery - 8
Toughness - 9

Running warm up/down 14:30 [3] 2.0 mi (7:15 / mi) +15m 7:05 / mi

Friday Aug 9, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 35:21 [3] 5.0 mi (7:04 / mi) +30m 6:56 / mi

Hadn't been through the university for a while, so did my standard loop that way. Felt quite good, take 8 min first mile off once again. Will probably pass on a second run today.

Thursday Aug 8, 2013 #

Running warm up/down 19:30 [2] 2.5 mi (7:48 / mi)

To/from station warm up and warm down.
12 PM

Running 31:01 [3] 4.4 mi (7:03 / mi) +20m 6:57 / mi

Round Southern bits of York, making it up as I went along. Felt reasonable, warm again. Tourists, kids and swans everywhere.
6 PM

Orienteering race 41:01 [4] 5.1 mi (8:03 / mi) +35m 7:52 / mi

Clok Score Event, Preston Hall Park, Eaglscliffe.
Picked up on this earlier in the week and thought why not, easy enough to get to after work.
Odds/evens format, set off on odds, after about 4, another bloody dog chasing me across field, despite me stopping twice, laze arse owner couldn't grasp it under control, whilst his female comrads pissed themselves as the dog followed me everywhere. Unbelievable. Hoped it followed me down into the woods, but sadly it didn't.
A bit scrappy in places, and didn't pick up the one in the gardens on the way out but it was off the loop which ever way I went.
Spent a while looking for one where it said 'spur' and gave up after 2 minutes and moved on.
Evens side went fairly well not that the technical difficulty was high (thankfully for me!) and swept them all up, except for the spur which I visited on warm down and it was there, just not in the right place.
Good fun and got a good sweat going, friendly bunch of people too. Nice park.

Wednesday Aug 7, 2013 #

Running 40:03 [3] 5.65 mi (7:05 / mi) +150m 6:33 / mi

Round footpaths and trails Chevin end and Guiseley. Didn't feel too bad really, moving quite well. Superb evening. Got a segment back from the guy who is clearly targeting them, and doesn't race!!
1 PM

Running 43:22 [3] 6.0 mi (7:14 / mi) +20m 7:09 / mi

All the way out to the ring road north down the Ouse footpaths, and then back down the other side on the roads. Turned out to be bang on 6 miles. Bit warm again, pace quickened as I warmed up but wasn't as comfortable as I would have liked. Environment Agency diggers have obliterated the river path up by Clifton, I do hope they are going to fix it.

Tuesday Aug 6, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 29:20 [3] 4.0 mi (7:20 / mi) +15m 7:15 / mi

Knavesmire. Felt OK. Getting in the groove again hopefully.
7 PM

Running 49:42 [3] 6.6 mi (7:32 / mi) +100m 7:11 / mi

Same as last Tuesday but actually had massage. Lot of tightness in quads. Most of run with rucksack which wasn't ideal as it has started to rub my lower back quite badly.

Monday Aug 5, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 31:01 [3] 4.35 mi (7:08 / mi)

Rowntrees Branch anti-clockwise. Wet. Felt reasonable so pushed on a bit.
6 PM

Running 47:09 [3] 6.6 mi (7:09 / mi) +100m 6:49 / mi

Down to Esholt and back up again.
Altercation with ignorant dog owner.
Again felt good so pushed on, taking the first mile off both runs today and they've been solid, though slight feeling they felt faster than they actually were. Enjoying the slightly cooler weather which I am ashamed to say, also saw first conker on ground. And XC has already been mentioned, the football season has started, so I can officially declare Summer over.

Sunday Aug 4, 2013 #

2 PM

Running 1:21:24 [2] 10.0 mi (8:08 / mi) +290m 7:28 / mi

Easy Sunday run, Menston, Burley, Otley, Chevin, Guiseley.
Legs felt good at a slower pace, but I never really felt going faster.
Climbing Chevin hurt a bit more than I would have liked.
But what hurt more was a massive face plant on a footpath down to Guiseley on a rock covered by overgrowth, Tom Daley would have been proud

Saturday Aug 3, 2013 #

8 AM

Running warm up/down 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +10m 7:56 / mi

Manchester Airport to Wythenshawe Park
9 AM

Running 17:47 [5] 3.1 mi (5:44 / mi)

Wythenshawe parkrun - 2nd, 17:47

Died on my arse basically.
One of those courses that looks quick but isn't, difficult to figure out.
Had a guy track me to half way and then pull away convincingly, turns out it was 2000 Olympian James McIlroy

Running warm up/down 9:00 [1] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Friday Aug 2, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +5m 7:58 / mi

Bootham hosp and Foss path. Slow start, eased into it, then everything after 2m was a struggle, light headed and feeling low on energy. Not ideal
6 PM

Running 32:10 [3] 4.1 mi (7:51 / mi) +30m 7:40 / mi

Up to Guiseley Cemy to meet Matt, then a lap of Highroyds and home. Felt better than lunchtime but still not great, though with a bit of effort found some pace near the end.

Thursday Aug 1, 2013 #

12 PM

Running 31:12 [3] 4.1 mi (7:37 / mi) +20m 7:30 / mi

August is getting smashed so that means lots of double days.
This run seemed to last forever which isn't a good start, though the pace was fine.
7 PM

Running 51:14 [4] 6.9 mi (7:26 / mi) +285m 6:35 / mi

Amazing run up the bridlepath from Menston/Hawksworth up to the top of Ilkley Moor/Rombalds Moor and down to Ilkley itself, train home.
Hot, clear, still evening, views for miles, no one about. Legs even were up to it, after yesterday.
One for the scrapbook.
