orienteering 6:38:00 [3]

annual ottawa oc rogaine!!! frosty morning when we started, but the sky was the most gorgeous blue, and all the leaves were a crispy orange and yellow and crinkled when you ran through them! so wonderful to just be out in the park!! started out on the 1:10000 map and took about an hr to get 3/4 of the controls before heading onto the 1:25000. when we marked out our route beforehand, we included all of the controls except for this one on the side of a hill with a 70m climb. we actually didn't make a single orienteering mistake for the whole entire race!! just felt fabulous!! we took turns leading, but i think my dad did more than me, it's just when he wasn't sure where we were, and i had been following along, i'd just point our where we were and then take the lead. happened once on a 3km leg through the woods; he was leading, though we were in a swamp but we were actually in a re entrant but he didn't believe me. so i lead us along and spiked the control. although not after being attacked and mauled by a field of burrs!! goodness gracious those things are just brutal!! i got halfway through before i realized what i had gotten myself into. so i went back out and spent the next 5min just trying to get them off me. didn't work all the well, so the rest of the course i was all prickly and itchy. :S so back to the one on the 70m hill, by the time we got to where we should cut in, we had 5hrs 30min left which was plenty, but we weren't sure if it was enough. for way too many rogaines we've had to book it into the finish and skip out on some easy controls. so we decided to skip that control and go straight onto the water station. the rest of the course went just as wonderfully as the first half and so has we approached the 1:10000 map again, we had about 2 1/2hrs! the knees were a bit wobbly by then and just getting over this log that was only about knee high was quite the task!! it actually felt like i was running through the woods wearing high heels!!! got the last few controls and stumbled into the finish with 1hr 15min left... almost definitely enough time to have gotten that other control and it turns out that we also missed a second one because we didn't even see it wayyyyy up in the corner blending in with the map. a bit frustrating but it's alright because since we were back so early we got home in time to go to my grandma's for turkey dinner!!!! yippeee!!!!

running race 21:35 [5] 5.0 km (4:19 / km)

slow times for this course since it's so friggen hard!!!! my goodness, a huge gigantic hill in the first 200m, then 2 beach runs and another hill. i think i started out a bit too fast. but i felt great at the beginning and then after the second hill, this just went kablooey from there. my arch enemy who's beat me since gr 8 was behind me for about 7min, but passed me right before the 2nd beach run and then i just couldn't hand on for the last km through the ski trails. 5th place was behind me by a lot so i was tempted to walk, but i finished the course about 20sec behind my arch enemy. the girl who won is this beast of a runner with legs up past my hips and then 2nd place was a tank gr 12. national capital should be quite interesting and at the hornet's nest so the times will be faster.

orienteering race 1:02:22 [4]

fun race today!!! felt just a tad tired throughout the course but my orienteering felt pretty good. tried to avoid the trails just for fun of running through the woods. one mistake on control 5 where i was too far south and as i finally found the control, i saw my dad coming up behind me and he had started 3min after me! ahhhhh!!!! kicked it up from la-di-da mode, to can't-let-the-old-man-beat-me mode. sped off through the woods on lost him on the hill on the way to 6. kept the speed up for the last 3 controls and my route to 9 was so gorgeous!! straight through the green; through all the brambles and prickly stuff, to come out right where i wanted!! yes!! i love it when that happens!! unfortunately i messed up 10 losing a minute and about 1min after i finished he came running in with a big smile on his face cause he knew that he had me! ooh shucks!!! :)
