An "Ultralong-Sprint" type course at UC Berkeley. The course had exactly the same character as a well designed sprint... except it was 7 km long. This kind of meant that it had to have many more controls than a typical sprint: 45 to be exact. I can't say I've ever run a course with this many controls (including Score-Os); both the split sheets and the control description sheets were comically long. Maintaining sprint-like focus for the entire race was key, and I did OK, managing to make no mistakes or significantly suboptimal route choices for the entire race. Speed is something I definitely need to work on, though.

Orienteering race (San Carlos) 32:33 [4] ** 6.32 km (5:09 / km) +101m 4:46 / km
5c shoes: Adidas Thrasher 2 M

An urban/park navigation race put on by Terraloco using a modified street map (Peninsula Greenways). I had some issues with one of the controls which was on a trail junction in a park with a lot of mazy, winding trails; I overshot it twice and had to stop to relocate. Otherwise, the course went OK, and I was able to run fast along most of it. Thanks to Rex for setting this up!

Track Run intervals (Woodside High School) 41:02 [3] 7.79 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Adidas Thrasher 2 M

I was initially planning to do 3x1600m, followed by 4x400m sprints. However, I didn't realize there would be a lacrosse game going on at the same time as I was on the track. I completed my first 1600 without a problem (5:43). However, during my second 1600, one of the subs from Carlmont was twirling a lacrosse stick on the track and, with his back turned towards me, managed to hit me in the face with the net end (unintentionally, or so he said (-; ). After that, I did 3x400 (1:13, 1:12, 1:15) and a hurried warm down. Lessons learned: check for track scheduling conflicts, and try to avoid lacrosse players...
