A Blue course at J D Grant South. Most of it went really well; the fact that the advanced courses were mostly downhill made me feel like I was going faster than usual, with one exception. The leg from #6 to #7 (#77) slowed me down to a standstill, as I got bogged down on a muddy hillside teeming with chaparral and poison oak. The aging map just did not make sense in some places; the fence I was planning to use as a catching feature was nowhere to be found, the coarse contours on the map didn't match up with the myriad of minor contour features I was seeing, and the vegetation mapping was inconsistent at best. My route choice had something to do with it; from what I heard, the map was more accurate around the straight and northwest options, and other runners who took the southeast option along the indistinct trail (including Gavin and my dad) made similar mistakes... Except for this one control, it was a fun course!

A 10-mile TrailCross event put on at J D Grant by BAOC. It wasn't quite 20 km (that was the trails-only distance) (not that I mind too badly)... There were a lot of route choices that made the mass start feel less like a stampede, and it was often possible to tell if you had taken an optimal route choice by looking around at where other people were. Tomorrow's event at the same park is classic orienteering with mostly downhill courses (yay!).
