A Long course training in Briones set up by my dad. I ran the first four controls at race pace, but then began getting persistent cramps in my left calf that slowed me to a jog/walk. Although the terrain was typical Bay Area brutality, some important lessons were reinforced:

- If choosing between a straight route that goes through a steep re-entrant and a roundabout route on roads and paths that is twice as long but has little climb, the roundabout route tends to be faster almost every single time.

- Never run blindly out of the start without looking at the map. It's incredibly easy to overlook a good route choice to the first control and not realize it until halfway up the first hill.

- If the map in question happens to have 7.5 m contours, know that the map has 7.5 m contours before starting the course!

- When orienteering in the Bay Area, think like a cow, especially when crossing steep re-entrants...
