Orienteering race 1:39:47 [3] *** 8.9 km (11:13 / km) +235m 9:54 / km
spiked:18/29c shoes: New Balance RX Terrain

35th Oxford-Cambridge Orienteering Varsity Match, held on Leith Hill, Surrey. Most of the Cambridge team didn't make the event in time after they got stuck in the traffic delays caused by the M11 van fire, so the individual VM itself was postponed to the following day. Kat's and distracted's training logs will reflect this. However, since I'm no longer a student, I ran as a guest among the alumni on the Saturday.

I don't have my maps with me since they were collected on Saturday and I didn't remember to reclaim one on the Sunday. However, Kat had picked up two copies of the men's course maps (not sure why) and kindly let me have one of each.

I got on mostly okay with the controls in the technical part. With number 3 I ended up hitting the holly bushes to the south of the control, but with number 15 I really don't know what happened. I was fairly sure where I was, and was fairly sure I was going the right way to the control, but I just could not find it. Eventually I got lucky and spotted it.

It was the legs out of the technical bit that threw me the most, particularly number 16 (the last one before the map exchange) and number 29 (the last one). With both of these I hit a different path to the one I thought I was on and ran the wrong way. With number 16 I found myself by the car park 300m to the south, and with number 29 I eventually figured out I was going the wrong way and instead of doubling back on myself as any sensible person would, I decided to head through the morass of grot between the path I wanted and the path I should have been on instead.

Number 23 was also a bit of a problem. It was in a clearing in the vague north part. I didn't really have any plan to hit this one. I eventually found the larger clearing further north and then spotted the control from there.

Note
(rest day)

Still a bit knackered after yesterday's circuit session, and it wasn't easy cycling into town against the wind earlier today, so I'll have a day off. I'll probably go for a run tomorrow.

In other news, the swelling is now going away. I don't know what it was or why it was, but as long as it goes away and doesn't come back I don't really care.

Circuits intervals 1:00:00 [4]

Not the usual session, this time we were treated to the joys of the 1-hour orgy of pain that is circuits without equipment. Yay!

I have to say I do like circuits sessions with no equipment. It certainly does more for the ab than circuits with equipment. And you don't otherwise get the chance to do 'bastards' without annoying the neighbours or looking like a complete prat or both! You also spend more time resting, and you can keep your drinks with you. I also find myself less breathless at the end.

Orienteering race 1:37:00 [3] 12.3 km (7:53 / km) +250m 7:10 / km
spiked:20/29c shoes: New Balance RX Terrain

Egypt Woods and Burnham Beeches is one of southern England's finest areas. The whole area is generally very runnable, although Burnham Beeches to the south has a fair smattering of holly bushes. There are also a few small areas of contour detail towards the south of the map.

The map had been specially extended to the north of Egypt Woods, and this is where the courses started. I quite enjoyed the first bit, perhaps because I spiked all the controls in it!

The silliest mistake I made by a long way was on the way to number 10. I headed away from number 9 in what seemed to be the right direction, and found a control in the same kind of feature. There should have been a thicket by the control but there wasn't. Since the number was on my description holder I just punched it without realising. Then, I headed off towards number 11. I can't be sure exactly where I went, but I eventually found the control. It was then that I thought "hold on a moment, this looks familiar". I had found number 11 and punched it twice without finding number 10! Cursing, I then ran from 11 to 10 and then back to 11 to punch it for the third time!

One consequence of this was that my SI card would not register the time I punched the last control, and hence I wouldn't know my run-in split. Using my stopwatch, I estimated it to be about 15 seconds.

13 was a long leg (1840m) which I screwed up towards the end, getting confused by three parallel paths. 19 was another long 1km+ leg and running through some slow-run forest was not a particularly good idea, although as I emerged from this block of forest I could see the control.

I got very tired towards the end, which definitely had an adverse effect on leg times, but other than that I enjoyed my run. Luckily the swelling wasn't being much of a problem either.
