Traverse! Starting down in Ponkapoag, which is a little less hilly, and less mapped, and a little thicker, but fun to go somewhere new. The Blue Hills are not small, and it's pretty amazing they've been running this for nearly half a century.
Started in a group to 1, then to 2 on a trail, somewhat behind Keegan, and right in front of guy/Brit Alex, to 2, trail to 3 with a not-great attack, ran with him and Keegan through 5, buggered up 6 a bit but refound them to 7 and then 8.
Last week at Wawa my new shoes were fine with the laces in the "garage." Not so much with constant blueberries; so I had to re-put them in, and next time have to do an Alex magic knot. Salomons they are not, those never came undone. We were looking for 8, I stopped to tie my shoes, but lost ground on Alex and Keegan there and didn't make it back on the way to 9, where I dealt more with my shoe and misread the boulder and dot hill and lost time as Wyatt caught up (with someone else, I think). We had some trouble with 10 in the boudler field, then across 128 to find Keegan et al a control ahead of us on the competitor spectator control.
I got ahead on 15 which I went left on and navigated pretty well, but then Wyatt caught up on 16 when I misread control descriptions and was looking for a boulder instead of a reentrant and ran right by the control it seems, then we both lost some time on 17, Wyatt winding up too far down, and the control being mapped in white and actually in green. That allowed Ernst to catch up to us somewhat, and Jimmy was with him. Left to 18 but right may have been better, and to 19 I went high to attack off a trail but overran a trail junction and lost time. Then 20 was struggly to find that depression which should probably be mapped as >5m deep since I skied down in to it. I saw the field option and ran down that trail, lots of contours but not a terrible route choice. I caught Wyatt and Ernst and we ran together to 21 nicely, then to 22. Almost done! I went right to 23, right down a trail/stream, feet wet, went to attack 23 off a junction but did so poorly, and lost time to both Wyatt and Ernst before finally finding it … somewhere. So definitely some nav bobbles, but lots of fun!
