10 AM

Run 4:09 [1] 0.5 mi (8:18 / mi)

Run around the Common to the start, and then over and in to the Garden to stay out of embargo.

Orienteering race 10:47 [3] ** 1.4 mi (7:42 / mi) +20m 7:23 / mi

Common-O. I did this without a compass, holding the clues (control numbers) in my left hand, since I could get directions by looking up (helps to know where things are). Ran a relatively clean race; a couple of little bobbles, but wound up second in my heat.
2 PM

Run 5:58 [1] 0.7 mi (8:31 / mi)

After hubwaying home, fixing the garbage disposal, and hubwaying back (I guess I folded some laundry too, or something equally useful) I was ready to go again. Quick warm up over in to the Ladder District.

Orienteering 15:42 [3] ** 2.2 mi (7:08 / mi) +20m 6:56 / mi

My morning had put me in to the A final, which was fun, but people in there are fast. I went out and made a couple of mistakes, slowing down to get to 2 and going one or two trees off at another control, but came through the map control doing well. I grabbed the new map and decided to go to the left of the field to the control and started reading ahead and made a huge parallel error—instead of going around the cemetery, I went around the ballfield and wound up by the morning start. Oh.

I quickly reconned and found my way back to the course and ran the rest of it relatively quickly, but had lost half a minute and probably just a place (I was in 7th before the debacle and wound up back in 7th, but according to Attackpoint the amount of time I lost would have put me in 6th, although I think I lost more than AP says). Anyway, that's what happens when you go up against real orienteers (although it was almost more of a ski-o race; less technical and more fine route choices).

Lots of fun—great event Ed, Alex et al!

Orienteering 8:07 [1] * 0.6 mi (13:31 / mi)

Then I went to pick up controls.

It was so nice I was going to go home and ride bikes but wound up chafed enough from not chafe managing and being dehydrated I didn't. Knee started feeling a tiny little bit. Hubway to TJs, then home.

Core (deck) 20:12 [2]

One week of decks, done! Might go to a three-to-five times a week pace now that I have the base, meaning that I'm not sore as a mfer after a deck. Strength!

Bicycle 58:00 [1] 11.5 mi (5:03 / mi) +50m 4:59 / mi

Another O race, another bike ride. Aims was giving me props for biking to every Park-O (the only one I didn't bike to was the only one I missed at Northpoint, when I was in marathon recovery mode). Slept in after the distillery tour last night (a great tour, thanks Ed!) and then had a lazy day (I have reverse Seasonal Affected Disorder: I get bummed when it's hot and sunny) before deciding to finally go to the O race and back.

Orienteering race 25:49 [3] 2.4 mi (10:45 / mi) +20m 10:29 / mi

Another O race. Some greenbriar in the woods, and I can never get a good flow at Franklin Park, but it was a good excuse to run around in the woods for a few minutes. Didn't mess up anything too bad, but made a lot of small mistakes and never got going too fast. Still fun.
7 PM

Core 22:45 [1]

Keeping the streak alive. Hot, but done.

Run hills 31:27 [1] 2.3 mi (13:41 / mi) +210m 10:39 / mi

I wasn't sure I'd go to November Project but my mom went and I decided if my mom was going I should too. My knee was still a bit wonky, though, so after one run up the hill I joined her and her friend (who lives on Beacon Street and wondered what all those people were doing) for the second trip up. Took things very easy—no record attempts down the hill—to keep from reinjuring.

Core (Deck) 19:12 [2]

Good deck after NP. I'm now beyond the point where I am sore and getting a little faster. Nice to do it in cool grass. Hot decks are less fun.

Core (deck) 21:30 [1]

Doing another deck and feeling marginally better and going marginally faster. It's good to know from experience that these get easier after a week.
6 PM

Bicycle 57:00 [1] 13.2 mi (4:19 / mi) +25m 4:18 / mi

Biking to and from O. Faster there than back. Avoided the Rotary of Death, mostly.

Orienteering race 18:09 [3] 1.9 mi (9:33 / mi) +30m 9:06 / mi

I was lollygagging around and they started saying "Ari, you're next, go, go go!" and I was changing shirts and needed some help pulling on my CSU shirt and went running off in to the woods, mostly the right way.

I was doing well at first, seeing Alex ahead of me, and she made a big mistake on 8 and I was almost caught up to her. Ran well to 9, 10, 11 and then buggered up 12, not going in to the woods, losing contact, and having to stop and reorient; not good in a sprint. Ed came running towards me saying "Ari's lost" and I wanted to say "yeah, on your map" but figured out where I was and went running in to the woods.

Lost about 6 places on 12. Oh, well. Then there was pizza.

Core (deck) 23:00 [1]

Second deck is always the hardest. This one wasn't that bad. Sore from yesterday, but not too, too bad. Might this be the start of a beautiful #deckaday?

Note

Okay, knee still hurts when hauling a bike up and down stairs. So I guess it's not all better yet.

Core (Deck) 22:00 [1]

Deck in 22 minutes this morning. Still letting the knee rest some, but it feels much, much better today than yesterday (i.e. basically no pain). Deck was going well until about 8000 push-ups in a row; I'm still weak so that was hard. Amazing to think in the fall of '13 I got up to knocking these out sub-14. Well, something to aspire towards!
