Steady rain at my base in Kyneton, but only overcast and 3° warmer at the event site. Fantastic arena at the foot of a concave hill to view the last few controls. Another long 1.2km (+85m) walk to the start. Came close to a win today but mucked up #12.
#1-7 - Short straight legs with an uphill track part of the way to #3. #8 - Joined W-E track then followed fence to corner and compass to clearing. #9 - Run to saddle then contour. #10 - Run to cleared area beyond fence then diagonal descent to white boulder area. #11- Descent to obvious boulder. #12 - Took me a while to realise I had to cross another fence (lost 2:15). #F - Marked trail.
Best leg: #8 (1st/36). Best pos: 1st/36 (#9-11). Worst pos: 9th/36 (#1).

"Kyneton", Sacred Heart College VIC. Course D: 2.0km, +20m, 20c. MP on #17. Notional finish time would have placed me 2nd - 1:03 behind Martin Crosby NZ. 11°C. TE 2.5. Vdot 26.0
Typical campus map on a slight slope. I was killing it until the MP. Didn't check the # because an older lady was blocking the stand. Only time loss was when I went to #6 before #5.
Best legs: #2-3,6,10-12,16,F (1st/45). Best pos: 1st/46 (#3-4).

Another bike ride to the arena from a distant car parking area. 1.3km (+75m) walk to the start meant we would mostly be descending during the race. Two poor controls cost me dearly. Need to work on holding a bearing across a slope.
#1 - Initial bearing off by 90° (lost 30"). #2 - Good bearing for 2/3 leg then angled left. Found #3 first and took 2 attempts at relocating (+10:30). #3 - Straight. #4 - Missed right by 40m and got distracted by other CPs in similar depressions (+12:30) way past mine. #5 - Straight. #6 - Contoured to clearing. #7 - Track uphill then short contour. #8 - Contoured to track. #9 - Track to shin deep water crossing. #F - Straight sprint. Total est time lost: 23:30.
Best legs: #3,7,8,F (1st/6). Best pos: 4th/6 (#).

Award-winning pie shop in Kyneton for breakfast. Parked about 1.2km from the arena. Saved a long walk down a gravel road by jumping on my road bike (planning a long ride on the rest day). Long meandering 1.3km walk to the start. Visibility was mostly good on course. Legs were short which reduced risk of being way off course.
#1 - Followed WC. #2 - Compass, but drifted R too close to road (lost 2'). #3 - Track then compass. #4-5 - Straight. #6 - Drifted R again but CP obvious. #7 - Never on right bearing, had to come back from creek (+3'). #8 - Track across creek then straight uphill. #9 - Straight. #10-11-F - Main tracks. Total est time lost: 5'.
Best legs: #2,4-6,8-F (1st/5). Best pos: 1st/5 (#2-6,8-F).

Was going to skip this event and watch the AFL grand final. But the Swans were getting smashed by quarter time and things weren't getting much better at the start of the second quarter. Mass start with a convoluted follow-the-leader to the actual start triangle. First 10c and last 7c on steep parkland adjacent to the lake, middle 6c in a primary school, and 2c on the edge of the commercial area. The 2 A/B choice controls didn't require any real decision making. Really just a long sprint.
Best legs: #1,4-7,12-18,20-22,F (1st/4). Best pos: 1st/4 (#1,4-7).
