Trail quite dry except in the drainage channels. Fastest ride on this course since February (before the rains came). Recovered OK after the weekend's O races. 18°C. TE 3.0.

Orienteering race (ACT Long / SL 13) 55:52 intensity: (3 @1) + (11 @2) + (6:27 @3) + (39:24 @4) + (9:47 @5) **** 5.32 km (10:30 / km) +165m 9:06 / km

"Tidbinbilla", Paddys River ACT. M55AS / Hard 5: 3.5km, +110m, 11c. 2nd/4 (14" behind Garry Stewart). 11°C. TE 3.4.
Another map with scrubby vegetation throughout. Prepared for a slow run. Too many people on H5 so we were started at 1' intervals.
Started 1' behind Garry and caught him before #1 but he was always close to me throughout. Very happy with compass executions for #1-6. #7- Compass then tracks. #8 - Tracks to open area. #9 - Planned to follow track combination to CP but ended up following the marked route backwards from the second start Δ. I thought I was on a mapped track but I now know it was just a muddy gully. Took me a while to work out where I was when I emerged at a clearing (+1:30). #10 - Pushed off good bearing by thorny vines. Spent too much time in the wrong clearing (+3:40) - Gary got 49" ahead of me here. #11 - Terrible bearing (+1'). #F - Followed tracks rather than risking trying to run around the green. Total est time lost (6:10).
Best legs: #1-6,8,F (1st/4). Best pos: 1st/4 (#S-9).
Frustrated that I couldn't win at least one race this weekend but two narrow 2nd places is probably better than one win and one big loss. Having different winners probably helps my OY chances.

"Pine Island", Greenway ACT. M55AS / Course 6: 2.7km, +85m, 17c. 2nd/4 (32" behind Andrew Mac Donald). 11°C. TE 3.9.
Pine Island: I was last here 44 years ago during my first weekend at ANU. I only remember there was a rock ledge on the other side where you could safely jump into the river several metres below. Tricky little map adjacent to the Murrumbidgee River. #1-5 in a very technical area with lots of small to medium boulders in thick scrub. #7-10 in an open forested area. #11-16 random boulders not far from the river bank.
Started 2' behind Peter and 2' & 4' ahead of Garry & Andrew. #1 - Tried to use the large bare rock area as an AP but didn't go far enough (lost 3:30) - all M55AS starters in the same area but left Peter behind. #2 - Compass. #3 - Missed and ended up at #4 (+1:15) - last time I saw Garry. #4 - Backtrack. #5 - Wrong boulder on edge of large bare rock (+1:20). #6 - Nice to stretch out. AP was toilet block. Andrew still with me. #7 - Long run uphill across grassland, road and track. Wrong side of hill (+35") - no sign of Andrew. #8-F: OK. I needed to finish 4' ahead of Andrew but I only made up 3:28. Missing 7 SL events (COVID, VMTBO, Oceania) puts pressure on the OY pointscore. Total est time lost (6:40).
Best legs: #2,5,7,9-11,15-F (1st/4). Best pos: 2nd/4 (#4-F).
