"Dunolly Forest" (VIC). M50 / Course 2: 30km, +400m, 10c. 22nd/26 (53:22 behind Hamish Mackie BF). 12°C. TE 3.2. 20psi.
Quite a fast map. Hills all doable. Some smaller 'tracks' were not always mapped. A bad mistake on #3 ruined any chance of a reasonable finish. I think it took me a long time to get used to the 1:20000 scale. Not so much distance estimation but how the tracks were straighter on the map than they seemed on the ground. #1 - Missed turn and then turned too soon (lost 4'). #2 - OK. #3(5) - Good plan but lost confidence that I had ticked off all the side tracks. Turned too soon but assumed I was still on track. Ended up at #6 !!(-14'). #4[6] - Turned too soon (-2:30). #5[7] - Missed turn (-35"). #6-F[8-13] - Tough slow climb to #8[10] but otherwise pretty fast second half. Best leg: #7 (13th/24). Best pos: 22nd (#2/7-F).

"Flat Creek - Maryborough" (VIC). M50 / Course 2: 8.5km, +95m, 19c. 21st/26 (12:29 behind Hamish Mackie BF). 11°C. TE 3.0.
A bit of rain about. Wore a long-sleeve thermal underneath and a spray jacket on top. Really enjoyed the tricky track network just after the start (#1-4) [laps 1-3] and then the longer faster legs during the middle part (#5-12) [laps 4-11]. The school part of the map (#13-15) [laps 12-14] was difficult to read (purple on orange) even with the slightly enlarged inset. Best leg: #12 (8th/24). Best pos: 20th (#13-14). Best legs: #13/18 (12th/23). Best pos: 15th/25 (#1).

"Tullaroop Forest", Maryborough (VIC). M50 / Course 2: 15.4km, +205m, 22c. 18th/25 (21:01 behind Stephen Hanlon V). 18°C. TE 3.8.
Absolute last starter from all classes, so no possibility of faster riders leading me into controls. A few wobbles but no major time losses. Enjoyable course with gentle hills. #1 - Turned a bit early (-45"). #3(-) - Missed turn across from main road (-1:15). #5(4) - Missed turn (-55"). #7(6) - Turned early on unmapped track to nowhere (-1'). #11(12) - Missed turn (-1:05). #20(21) - Map not oriented and went wrong way (-2:10).

"Mosquito Flat", Maryborough (VIC). M50 / Course 2: 22km, +230m, 22c. MP on #6 (notionally 60:06 behind Hamish Mackie BF). 27°C. TE 3.6.
Map flip at #9. Lost contact with the pack after #3 but thought I was doing relatively OK to #15. I got really confused after a faster section, missed my turn and didn't recognise any of the the road junctions when I stopped. Really tempted to DNF at this point but I couldn't be sure which track I needed to follow. Recorded 30' for #16. Not much enthusiasm for the final controls. Found out at the finish about the MP. Much longer than the ACT MS race which was probably a better distance. Time lost on controls: #4 (-1:10), #5 (-2:30), #9 (-45"), #11 (-1:20), #12 (-45"), 16 (-22'), #19[21] (-1:30). Best leg: #14 (4th/14 on C2AAAA). Best pos: 5th/15 (#2-3).

"Bull Gully Wells", Maryborough (VIC). 60min score course: 13c, max 260pts. 26°C. TE 2.3. 20psi.
No serious problems but I wasn't riding hard. A few mapped tracks were indistinguishable from the forest on either side. Some areas that looked like tracks weren't mapped as such. First ride with my new homemade A3 map board. Works well. Bulldog clips rattle a bit. Garmin was on "Bike' setting so I had an extra 'lap' after 1km if I hadn't reached a control. Control order: 1(2)-2(4)-11(6)-3(8)-4(10)-13(12)-5(13)-6(14)-8(15)-7(17)-9(18)-12(19)-10(21)-F(22). 260 points (no penalties).

Driving day to Maryborough, Victoria, for the AUS MTBO Championships (943km, 11 hours). Unfortunately a road worker was struck by a car on the M1 at Berowra early this morning. Later, during the morning peak 'hour', the S-bound lanes were closed for a police investigation with that traffic diverted to the N-bound lanes. The N-bound traffic was diverted to the old Pacific Highway. By the time I wanted to leave home just before 8am there was a 1km queue just to get onto the highway. My plan B was to head in the opposite direction across the Berowra Ferry and pick my way through the Hills District. Probably added an hour to the trip. Fuel at Campbelltown. Lunch at the Gundagai Tuckerbox, Dinner at Bendigo.
