paddling 5:00:00 [3]

Pullin Foot was taking a year off for various reasons - I hummed and hawwed about taking this year off too. Just finished UNE and I hadn't been training much since, but I really didn't want to miss the adventure of WT. Luckily, I was able to join on with STORM Beowulf. I knew they were an experienced and solid team, so I was looking forward to seeing how they operate and learning.

I steered in a boat with Gally. STORM steered with Mrs. Gally. I loved the variety of the paddle - threading the needle through islands, upstream on a quiet river, down some beautiful lakes. I was struggling with energy though, I didn't have it today. Just hoped I'd recover on the trek, b/c I knew the team could travel quick on foot. Anyway, competitive juices got flowing when O-store passed us on the 1km portage in, on the jog. Storm and I started jogging too, not to be outdone (at least there).

trekking 6:00:00 [3]

we cleared out of the TA reasonably quickly and got going on the trail. James followed through with our planned nav, Storm worked the bearings, a well oiled machine. We knew when we didn't hit the lake into CP4 at the distance that we could correct by heading south. worked out fine and landed at the lake almost right at the CP - good start.

travelling east we tried to take advantage of the exposed rock shield to travel faster than in the woods - i think it worked but damn it was hot. once at the powerline we went north and then around dogfish lake after getting a refill of water from the river. i'm not sure why we didn't go around dogfish to the south - i see that's what o-store did, looks more direct. i wonder if there was an unmarked ATV trail there - there was a motor boat in that lake. we heard the french team swim from the south to the north of dogfish, so we knew they were right on our tails and they caught us once we got on the path heading into CP5.

we overshot the trail heading east into CP5, our only real bobble, but we recovered well and carried on, then got some ATV trails that helped on the way to the TA.
