Orienteering 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: INOV8 TrailRoc 235

Walked around the model course at Carter Caves, Kentucky. After finding the five controls on the model, walked around the model area to see how things were mapped, what constituted light and medium green, etc., and saw one really big monolith, and a cave (outside only).

Orienteering race 33:20 [4] *** 1.9 km (17:33 / km)
spiked:13/15c shoes: INOV8 TrailRoc 235

National Championships Sprint run at Morehead State University, Morehead, Kentucky. No problems with reading the map, but two of my route choices could have been much better. Going to 8, I made a mistake going to the right and had to go way around--going left would have been a lot better. Same at number 11--I should have gone NW then east, instead I had to run around an uncrossable area.

Also, on the leg from 11-12, the mapmaker should have cut the line in another area because it obscured a staircase that could have been used and would have saved quite a bit of distance.

9Round 32:00 [4]
ahr:119 max:132

A harder workout today; we did the Burpee countdown--9 at station 1 interspersed with jumping rope, 8 at station 2, etc. My HRM stopped working in the middle of the workout, for one of those mysterious electronic reasons that gadgets have.
3 PM

Workout 1:00:00 [4]

Hard workout with my trainer. I did my agility drills holding a medicine ball over my head, then supersetted with pushing the sled. Not too bad going down, but I used the low handles coming back each time. Also, did not of drills with the big ropes, many of them standing on one foot. We really hit the balance stuff tonight.

9Round 32:00 [3]
ahr:110 max:130

Again, it feels like I'm working harder than my HR indicates. Lots of legs today.

9Round 32:00 [3]
ahr:109 max:125

I'm not sure if my HRM reset itself--I felt like I was working a lot harder, and some of the stations today were tough. That said, I was pretty wiped from yesterday--exposed skin itchy and a swollen, itchy face.

Note

We get to pay when we have our fun. I found my first two ticks of the season after I got home. Not quite attached, but they were working on it.
12 PM

Orienteering race 2:08:44 [4] *** 5.5 km (23:24 / km)
spiked:13/16c shoes: INOV8 Bare Grips

Orienteer Kansas had an event at Woodridge on the west side of Clinton Lake. I had planned on doing the mid-level course, but it was only Orange and I needed some practice, so I went with the long. A little problem finding the right bunch of vegetation on 4. No problems until 15 and 16 except that there were lots and lots of uphills, and some were steep and I had to stop a few times to get my breath back. I messed up some on both 15 and 16--getting much too tired and really out of blood sugar. I was too far north on 15, and almost the same thing on 16.

Really glad for the practice before the US Champs, and glad that I persevered and completed the long.

9Round 32:00 [4]
ahr:119 max:134

Some interesting moves today. At the last round, we had to hold plank position for the last 30 seconds. What a cruise after holding plank for three minutes yesterday.
