Lick Creek long, but more of a classic distance. Struggled badly with the 80+ heat and sun, legs also felt really tired and listless. Starting around 7 or 8, just had low energy and felt like I couldn't move well at all, especially uphill. Navigated pretty well, though it wasn't the most technical Lick Creek course ever. Did make one error on 6; control was located next to a small pond, which didn't seem as apparent IRL as mapped. In fact I think I ran directly through the pond (marsh) without noticing and without seeing the flag some 5m to my left. Regardless, always a pleasure to be in the Teanaway!

To Interbay for the HS Metro League championship match between Lakeside, widely known for being the alma mater of such orienteering luminaries as Tori Borish, Kyle Haddad-Fonda, and Holly Kuestner (as well as such lesser figures as Bill Gates), and Roosevelt, widely known for being named after one or other of the Roosevelts.

It is actually something of an honor to be on this game, as in the district playoffs referees are hand-picked by the assignors, as opposed to the regular season where if you have the necessary rankings you can generally self-assign on a first-come first-served basis. A number of referee-world folks (assignors, administrators, other referees) were in the stands, and there was quite a large crowd of some 400-500 people with large student sections for both sides; one of the guys said afterward that it was the largest crowd he's ever seen for an HS soccer match.

The game ended up not being particularly challenging from the referee perspective, though a lot of fun and the atmosphere was excellent. Lakeside won 1-0 on a goal near the end of the first half.

Home -> Interbay. This is an example of the rare journey of any real distance which may be achievable in real time faster by bicycle than by car. A number of necessary conditions were present: a relatively direct, largely flat cycling route with comparatively few obstacles/delays (i.e. traffic lights), a lack of a similarly direct driving route, and a departure time during afternoon/evening rush hour, when it is most arduous to traverse downtown Seattle by car.

When I left google said 27min driving; I felt sure I could beat this on bike - and I think I would have, except the waterfront trail ran into a dead end closed-off section, and it took me several minutes to double back and find the designated detour. I was also hindered at times by large quantities of other slow-moving trail users.

I will attempt the same goal tomorrow, and I will be successful.
