MAR 20 hr EPIC Caberfae

Ultratrac recorded 47m...no way...Guessing about 95.

3rd in division, 6th OA. With Tom and Andy as team "Thought this was a 5k."

I really liked the format of this race, Mark did a great job keeping us on our toes and moving.

There were 13 maps, but we were able to quickly get it together and sort what needed to be done for them to be ready. We had decided to not run too hard in the first O to be sure that Tom and I working together would work. We drew in the routes we wanted. He did compass and "out front" I pace counted and was to check we were hitting features we wanted. I did all the bike nav. Tom and I only mapped the N route, and Andy mapped the S route 'just in case we had to do it." Tom and I were determined to clear.

We started on bike for a few k. It was nuts, but a lot of fun. Got to the trek, punched and headed in.

Trek #1

Took it easy after the herd pushed us to 2 when we wanted 1, grrr, made our way to 3, overshot 4, then settled in for 5, 9, 8 and 7. We didn't exit 6 too reliably. Then ran the road to the bike.

Bike #1

Pretty straightforward. This was Tom's first overnight race and using a mountain bike, so it took some getting used to. He was really good about being in a pace line.

Trek #2

We were looking forward to doing some running on this part. We got to 10, eased our way to 11 (with some bobbling) and then decided we could run. We did well to 17, and had to stop for a few walk breaks for Andy. I pace counted a lot, and made suggestions as I had chance to look at the map on the runs. 15 to 16 we missed the trail, Tom thinks he pulled he and Andy over west and had me come to them. I thought they were on the trail but they weren't. We were a bit confused, but made our way to 16 and realized we had started passing teams. Met WAR along the way but our next move sunk any hope of getting ahead of them. We cut to the next trail through an unmarked SWAMP. Tom got stuck and we had to be super creative in getting him out. We did, and hit the trail ~200m westish of the paddle put in.

Paddle

THIS WAS THE COOLEST PADDLE EVER. Holy smokes, so much fog, turns, eddies, everything. There was a Canadian team in front of us that we passed (???) but they caught up and decided to let us do the nav work. Andy and I discovered at another race it's better to only have one headlight on in those conditions. There was no "just paddle" in this...it was a constant "where are we and where do we go." I was able to sort of determine where we were based on the backpacking camp sites along the river. A Heron swooped us. I hear MRA ran over a duck family. When we got out, my hands were white with cold. I could barely keep my index finger and thumb together to hold the paddle. We landed just before dawn. They def wanted to change, so I obliged in that I surprisingly threw in a whole change of clothes in my TA bin. It helped, but I can't imagine how much time it took to change. Changing sport bras when you are soaking wet (I was in the middle of the boat) out in the open -- well it takes a long time. Got maps organized on the bike and went on our way.

Bike #2

We came up short on our first distance, but we sorted it out. Then the next ones went well and I was really enjoying the ride! We got to Big M, and followed mostly the trail because it seemed to be better travel than the sand roads. We did take Koon Rd and biked it all, but overshot the N trail to 25 by about a k. We saw Richard, he was quite lost, towing his teammate, so we got him on line to get to 25. Made it there and biked out to the last O.

Trek #3

I was definitely warming up...couldn't believe just a few hours earlier I was so cold. Started on this trek, and after about 10 min or so, Tom was turned around. Uh Oh! I didn't have eyes on the map, I was eating and drinking. So, I stopped, and we got on the maps together and went the southern portion with the couple of hills first and then around to the north and out.

Bike #3

I was skeptical that any of this would be easy. Fortunately, Tom and Andy were not interested in any kind of speed, so I was able to keep a very close eye on the maps. Lots of turns and watching to not float or go on the wrong road. They asked a lot about how much longer :). Tom and Andy had some low points on this section. The worst of it was very very sandy, some good hills, but most of it was shaded which I liked. When we were within 4k of the finish, Tom decided to tell me (against Andy's will!) that the Canadian guys were about 1k behind us. I ordered Andy onto my tow and told Tom to bike like crazy or grab Andy's tow. We got them out of sight and rolled into the finish. Later, they told me they knew they were close for about 6k before they told me, because they knew I would make them bike hard.

I really enjoyed this race. I loved our team dynamic, I liked how we worked together and enjoyed the terrain. Mark did a great job. Wished it was longer. I only salted 2 times, hardly ate, which is not good, but we didn't push the pace so I felt OK. Only residual I think is from a lot of steep climbs. But a couple days out I feel quite good.


Things to remember:
I'm still swelling from the surgery. It starts to happen about 12 hours in.
Night paddle under 60 degrees can get cold. Prepare if I can.
Don't change clothes if it's just about being cold unless there is a really compelling reason.
In the thick of things, maybe reversing order isn't a bad idea.
Never trek in MTB shoes. I need to just stop that. I'm strong enough to carry shoes.
Mantain confidence. Whenever we were doing something, I would relate it back to something I do all the time in training, and it because less of a big deal and helped me focus more on moving forward. I read about the Brake Light Theory and I think it helped me feel more confident. I only tripped once. :)

Accidental deletion. Slow run and about 20 min of stretching. Tues night very strange left foot/ankle/leg tingling achey thing. What the what??? Had to stretch a ton and take Ibuprofen before I could sleep.

Mix of gravel paved and single track with ShrekFeet. Two big mechanicals. Going up yellow hill my chain jumped and got wedged between the spokes and cassette. Fooled with that for a while. Then on the blue hill off the road AGAIN. Decided to bail on single track when I saw how one of my links was stretched.

Bumped my watch and Mindy's said we did 80.1.

Stopped for map checks and a gas station stop. Pretty day.
