Adventure Race race 23:40:00 [3] 79.99 mi (17:45 / mi) +2092m 16:25 / mi

No Sleep 24 hour. Great race overall! Didn't like the fact that it seemed a couple of CPs were hidden and a couple maybe weren't terribly clear, but maybe it was necessary. It was well organized.

Syd and Kev did a great job with navigation in this race! 4th OA behind Rib, Kuat and Wedali. Very exciting! The forecast was for hot hot hot, but I don’t remember the heat getting to me. Enjoyed the times I was called on for pace counting, distance checks, “Barbara, stick with that team up there” moments. Got sick of the alarm on my watch, necessary evil. Stayed fed and salted! Biggest struggle was general clumsiness.

Bike 1 1:14 12.5
Initial bike out of the TA! A lot of time was spent trying to decide which way to go, but the prologue was being led out by a truck. Starts are always the worst for me, so I am thankful for the opportunity to tuck in, bike and have the first hour pass. We got on our first trails and they were glorious excepting for my terrible mud management. Gah. Bike came up from under a couple of times. Then on to TA 2.

Trek 1 1:34 4.6
Out of TA 2….got onto foot quickly. I had left my flatties at home, so I was clipped for biking. I plan in the future to always bring my flatties so the decision can be made with more information. Rest of the team went with flats. Later in the race they were great about helping with a couple of things while I swapped shoes which got harder as my shoes got muckier and feet swelled. Hit all of the points with not too much trouble and got back out of there.

Bike 2 1:32 8.8
Picked up points out to TA3, and biking did start to get dicier. Once we got to TA3 had to make the decision of ropes or paddle. There was a time cutoff for the ropes, but learned that most teams opted that way and we have all had to wait for ropes before and didn’t want to run the clock that way so headed out on the paddle. Andy and Kevin were gloriously chivalrous in hauling the boats.

Paddle 1 2:37 6.3
We had to use rental provided paddles which made me crazier than I expected it would! Had Kevin do what was comfortable for him. Nice pass on one of the teams and saw the lead teams coming in as we headed out. Points were pretty far off the water. Kevin was quite quick. At this point he definitely got the “fleet of foot” award for the race!

Trek 2 w ropes 2:32 5.5
Ropes always make me anxious. Heights are the worst for me. In the end, no trouble getting there and the ropes were no trouble at all. Concerned I took too much time fretting! But felt great afterward, onward! Syd was a superstar not just for the nav…but for the very quick climb she did, super impressed.

Bike 3 2:01 7.7
Continued on trails that were sometimes no problem and sometimes hike a bike. And some roads as well. Sigh…these sections sure highlighted what I need to work on. We had a cool water tower stop. The team in front of us had a bit of a lie down, which tickled me. And, as we descended a rocky craggy trail as the final bit into the TA, the team ahead of us seemed to disappear, and then I saw wheels in the air. I hopped off my bike fast!

Trek 3 5:53 11.6
Got into the TA just after sunset. Oof. Hats off to Kevin and Syd for naving this one. We decided to drop a few point in the interest of getting to the next bike/paddle/bike. Turned out it was an excellent decision. Especially since one of the points had disappeared, thankfully we didn’t even try to attack it.

Bike 4 1:42 11.8
Climbing out of the TA I expected to be awful awful, but I guess not too bad. Syd to take my bike, but I said no…which I shouldn’t have done. In retrospect, I certainly should have taken the offer, and offered to take her pack. I struggled with (albeit some rugged) MTB shoes and the mud and slick rock. Andy shared that the IT pain he had disappeared, and he felt better, I have never heard of IT band pain disappearing! Some sweet downhills and that bike was fun.

Trek 4 0:46 1.7
Got back to the TA and headed out to the next paddle…picked up a point on the way. Woot! Power lines! :)

Paddle 2 1:52 2.9
This is definitely my witching hour and felt pretty OK considering this. We got on the boats and I went slowly looking for the point because I thought I remembered it was right there….and later learned that we wouldn’t have even seen it…my bad! Picked up several points with the time deadline of getting back to give ourselves enough time for the last bike.

Trek 5 0:34 1.6
Back to the last TA and picked up a point on the way back.

Bike 5 1:24 5.1
Decided against the muddy mess of my bike shoes. In the end it worked out, but was tough on some intense climbs. The trails were very confusing. We got to a point where there was a trail that headed in the direction we generally wanted and went for it, and eventually Syd said “I know where we are!” and collected the points that were available. Andy was super encouraging about my biking on this section and feeling some intense time pressure I felt myself saying “Jesus take the wheel!”

Finish!

Well, not the results I wanted, but I had an epiphany...if I applied the same dedication and discipline to O training as I do to other things...I could be a lot better. None of this is automatic, and I already know that I generally need to work harder...and smarter. So, starting speciifc O training.

Planned to mostly walk this. Got to start, then 1 and went to 2 with the idea of seeing #15's depression, which I did. Then to 3 got my eye on the double reentrant. Then on to 4 with not a lot of trouble it seems. I hit a depression first that I didn't expect but quickly corrected. Then on to 5 via the trail, and 6 along the water. Got a little confused by 7, but realized I was standing at the base of the reentrant I wanted.

Then 8. Oh 8.

In the end, I think I hit the same small depression that was maybe about 10-20 yards from the point. I think there is an extra mini depression in there, or I am misreading the map. Grrrrrrrrrr....

Then 9 and 10 no problem. I started to worry about time and started to fee super distracted. Then I think what I thought was 11 was really just a randomly streamered cairn because 12 was not happening after a couple of attacks, Turns out my hunch was right and I had just about had it anyway.

So bad news on bad O. Good news on epiphany.
