Orienteering 11:20:00 [3] 31.0 mi (21:56 / mi) +1860m 18:29 / mi
shoes: INOV8 315

Sleepy Hollow! I love this Rogaine, and love the woods. Went down with a ton of folks from Michigan. They love it when we show up! Cooper cleared it, Tizoc got 3rd solo in the 6 and Jeff and Ken got 3rd team in 6h, and Syd, Kevin, Tone and Brenda and Joe were super strong. So impressed!

I knew going in my biggest challenge would be 1) doing a solo for 12 hours and 2) my tail bone. I drafted my route with the idea of easy at first, and then some challenge with opportunities to add on as I went through the race--and easy nav at the end.

In the end, I got the same score as last year, which surprised me because I messed up sooo much this year. I also think I walked right past 66, 65 and 81 at one point.

Started off very conservatively with 41 and 33, then on to 55 which I got caught in a logging field. Bah. Then Tizoc and I broke the punch for 55, and I had some duct tape to patch it all back together. We let HQ know. Then up to 44...I used the road, but Cooper later showed a better way, aha! Removed a layer and pulled out my pole. Then picked off 75, 54, overshot 45 a smidge, and that threw me. Got to 61 OK, then lost the trail! Ugh. And, overshot 71 which wasn't bad, but 81 I had to re-attack 2 times and left there about 1p--520 in the first 4 hours. My confidence was shot though. I had a bit of a run to get back down south and used it to psyche myself up, take a mental break and give myself some "atta girl"s. Don't get me wrong, I do like to do things alone...but this was hard, the map just started to look like it had squiggles and meant nothing. Then on to 66 and 65 which was attack, re-attack, scratch my head and go for it again. At one point I looked up and saw 66. I hate that. Then 65 was further back on a reentrant that showed itself at the trail on the map but much more subtle on the terrain/trail.

I was on to 74 (no problem thankfully), then water. There was no water so I treated at the creek. Around this time my tail injury ached a smidge so I took some Ibuprofen. Added a layer and was off to 53, 43, and 42. 53 was OK, but the trails in there are wonky--I didn't check direction on got on the wrong one for about a K. So, relied on terrain. I never found 43 and bailed on it--I think that's the first time I have ever gone for a point and gave up, but it was getting to be dusk and needed to mentally reset to keep going.

I planned my night O for the night, easy attacks and reliable features, and in the last 3 hours I picked up 270 points. I also was a lot slower because my tail was aching and I didn't want to aggravate it too much. I knew this 12 hour would be tough. My legs still had power, for sure, was still running flats in the end.

My first 3-4 hours and last 3 hours went OK, it was the inbetween that fell apart. And had a several K run that was empty time. So, in the past year, my orienteering I don't think is better, at best rusty, but fitness up quite a bit.

I still want to do POCAR if I can get people together.

Data loosely based on my fitbit. My garmin had a very strange draining problem that I discovered that morning, tried to trouble shoot and had to bail on it.

If you want the map happy to email it.

Don't have a lot of time for full on analysis right now....but felt OK other than bobbling 1 and going to 17 (!!!!!), using trails to get to 8, and 11 was a bit of a nightmare all around. Look forward to a better analysis, but work beckons!
