Sleepy Hollow Rogaine is in the books with Double M! Not sure how we placed, they named off top three after the race. Thanks Double M for teaming with me and letting me nav! We had perfect weather...it was awesome. And, a couple of interesting experiences!
A lot of really tough competition. I was pretty nervous about the race, but wanted to do it to build experience, work on long and night-O, see how I stand up to the longer nav mentally and physically and of course have FUN. All that happened...and learned some good lessons along the way.
The strategy was start slow with 2 easy points and take it from there. Pace was also important to us. We started with 44, 31 and headed for 83. Then 41, 58, then 61, 81, 76, saw a pet pig that wanted to follow us...then up to 56 and 65. Then 42, 55, 63--(spiked them all from attack points, and it was awesome) and then on 52...started to mentally tire a bit...I made a 180 error on that--about 15 min off. Interestingly, that was about 6 hours in. I had run out of water by that point and was worried by all the dry creeks. Pressed on from there, and headed to 32, and saw a house. Heard from hikers a very nice lady lived there.
Me: Maria, you knock on the door. M: Why? Me: You're shorter and less intimidating.
Maria got permission, dashed to the kitchen to fill water. When she came out, found me on the floor trying to fix the homeowners fireplace insert, and she said that I looked so afraid. And in my higher, very nice voice, "ma'am, I am very concerned about blowing up your house. I would really prefer to have you call a service person, please." Fortunately, she agreed.
We were happily back on the trail, and on to 32, and dusk was approaching, and decided to go big before going home. :)
84 I thought I was on the right contour line, but needed to go lower. Then got it right away, and climbed the WALL back up. To get to 73, did a bit of a drop south for a more reliable attack to the trail, which I bobbled, but got on, and Maria saw the point from a good distance, maybe 50m? Unbelievable.
Then we went on to 40, then 30, then it all fell apart. We planned to get 53 and I did a 180 out of 30, and did not question the road seeming long. My biggest nav mistake ever. And, the trail we landed on was so similar to the trail we were supposed to be on...we landed on a major straight road, struggled with where we were, and by the time we re-loed...decided to pack it in and walked back. Still feel a little bummed...but probably attributed to mentally being done. Wonder about tricks to stay focused?

Workout--Inspired by Mr. Dubs and JayXC. Rainy cold paddle with Mr. Wonderful. I sterned upstream, and he got the downstream. The time flew by....for sure. A lot of fun, and clearly need to work harder on this. Throwing down the gauntlet...we will paddle at least once a month through the winter. Shrek Feet, looking at you too!!!!
In other news...did my first solo Red. Lots of fight...some major mistakes in the realm of 20 min on a few. But, I believe I did well on the others. Intentionally went on the slow side to be sure I was observing the terrain.
On the technical side of things, when I got home, my garmin was not getting past the boot screen. Then, it did, showed the data and I quickly went to download. Well, bugger, when I got back to my computer (after a curiously long download) it didn't appear in garmin connect and it shows my history as all having happened today. Except, doesn't have my data from today. What a bummer.
