Note

Learned so much from this race! The biggest one was I could have pushed myself so much harder. I woke up feeling great today. Was totally, totally shocked. Not sure I could have done more on the paddle, I think that was skill level hands down, and I just don't have stern skill. I can keep a really straight line on flatwater, but in that river, gosh it was so tough and admittedly felt defeated. I also learned to not feel defeated!

Need to work on 1) biking faster, 2) USGS nav, 3) how to push myself harder. 4) drafting and lastly to have confidence!

Thanks to all you guys who were out there, you all were really helpful! Thanks! Any suggestions are welcome!

Orienteering race 49:00 [3]

Leg #1 of the race. Realized from one of the maps they gave us the trail around the lake, which led to #1. Then swam across the water to 2. Came out, and realized that the map was SOAKED. Turned out the dry bag didn't keep it so dry. UGH. Had to orienteer very carefully with it in the palm of my hand, so Michelle had to keep the bearing. Did the west/north thing and got #3 then on to 4 and attacked from the road. Phew!

Mountain Bike race (Single Track/Road) 55:00 [3]

Got on the bikes and went out on the trail. Biggest training mistake realized! I haven't done single track in the dark and I was NERVOUS! Went pretty slow, and good thing Michelle was really patient through the whole race. Made our way to the put in to paddle.

Paddling activity race 5:00:00 [3]

This sunk us (no pun intended). We decided tactically to go to 9, 10 then 13. Off the bat we knew our time would be better spent on the bike and nav than the paddle, which I would still agree with. I totally, totally underestimated how tough it would be mentally. We had a hard time determining the location of 13--Michelle was surprised it was back behind the lilies. Great challenge! then steer, steer, steer. It was tough steering proactively and not rudder so much. Phew. Came in last on this...

Running race 30:00 [3]

Back to TA. Took the road, trails and then back on the park road through the picnickers. Felt a little odd!

Mountain Bike 1:15:00 [3]

Off on the roads to around to 21. Felt pretty slow, but still going. Michelle tried to show me how to draft during that time, and I was too nervous to get too close, I knew we couldn't afford a crash!

Orienteering race 40:00 [3]

Checked in at 21, changed shoes, asked about timing. Went and punched 21. I quickly scanned the bikes and saw too many that I recognized. Realized it was a tough section and that we needed a bail point. Decided on 1:10. Got 23, hunted around for a minute for 26, and decided to head on. Goal at this point was to at least be ranked.

Mountain Bike (Road/dirt/single track) 1:15:00 [3]

Rode out to Holdridge, gear check, north loop, did the bushwhack, got both required points and rode back to TA with 30 on the way.

Orienteering race 1:27:00 [3]

Last section. Had to really look at the map to decide which points I felt were sure shots. I know that isn't always the case! Decided on 40 and 41 because of the topographically significant nearby areas I felt I could attack from...fortunately it worked!
