Mountain Bike 1:20:00 [3] 12.0 mi (6:40 / mi) +350m 6:07 / mi
rhr:54 slept:7.0 weight:184.2lbs

Did the dirt roads at Bishop, then headed out on the Murray Lake Long Loop. Totally dry except 2 very, very small mud spots. Little slow. Not used to so many arrows on the trail! :) It's beautiful out there...

Trekking (Orienteering practice-SLO) 2:54:00 [3] 5.2 mi (33:28 / mi)
ahr:120 max:179 shoes: North Face GTX

Out at Bishop....I am really tempted to shorten the duration, because my average HR was low, so it doesn't count? But, I fell like I need to fess up on how much practice I need to do!!!!!!!

Mountain Bike (Dirt roads/2 track) 1:20:00 [3] 14.13 mi (5:40 / mi)
ahr:136 max:155

Scheduled myself today to have a little bike time. When I started the rain had subsided, so I decided to do Rushton Hills. Headed out Peer to Twelve then across. Started on the hills and decided to so exploring. Jens mentioned a couple of entrances to the Badlands on the south side, and found one. Cruised the two tracks around there for a while, and then headed back to do some hills. It snowed about mid way in and the mud and wet sand slowed things a bit, but fun and adventurous! :).

Running 15:33 [3] 1.43 mi (10:53 / mi)
ahr:157 max:180

Woke up feeling sluggish, but determined to get out. Ran, then decided to try some 13-15/min mile walking. When I have done that before, I realized it uses different muscles--seems like a good idea to know the feel/form of that kind of walk to keep pace but still recover if needed.

Trekking 8:10 [3] 0.59 mi (13:50 / mi)
ahr:126

Wonder if I could speed it up a bit and recover to 130...

Running 15:15 [3] 1.65 mi (9:15 / mi)
ahr:149 max:158

Better round...

Trekking 5:08 [3] 0.37 mi (13:48 / mi)
ahr:130 max:134

Trekking warm up/down 4:00 [3]

Note

Mountain Bike ride BUSTED. Ali and I went out to the Crooked Lake trail, and about a mile in, her pedal hit a rock and tilted. Then...the threads stripped out. BIG BUMMER. So, we had to hike a bike back and talked about contours and features around us. :)
12 PM

Orienteering race (Hiland Orange) 1:52:00 [3] 4.8 mi (23:20 / mi)
ahr:144 max:179

Hiland Orange. Sigh. I had some big take aways.
#1 Cut too far south, got to 2, bugger.
#2 Ran up to 1, then went to 2.
#3 Ran up to the trail, then took the other trail to the south to 3. My reasoning was the short bushwhack would be minimized by the trail run to #4 I made a route choice error here, as well, an attack error. I think I would have been better served to go to the north and cut over 9 along the veg boundary cross the road and then the trail to 4. I would have been able to use more handles, familiarize myself with the area before the attack. Darn. Second error was the attack. I cut in to early, tried to justify it and realized if I am justifying too much I am in the WRONG PLACE. went back to the trail, saw that the slight bend threw me, also, after discussing with Ali, I realized I am still not reading contours correctly. Ran up the trail, sighted the veg boundary, cut in and got it.
#5 Headed across the trail. Could have stayed on, but couldn't see the ditches. Stayed mid on the contours, and tried to identify the ditches along the way. Got it, then headed straight north to the trail to 6.
#6 Followed the trail to 6, looked for the veg boundary and got it.
#7 Decided to heed the green, and seemed that helped in the split. I followed the trail and didn't bushwhack the green, I went slightly north and around. God bless those who tackled that green!!!!
#8 Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Lesson learned? It' my race! Just because I see a ton of people and streamers DOES NOT MEAN I AM IN THE RIGHT PLACE!!! I found control #34, and saw the vegetation boundary (after aimless wandering) and pinpointed where I was...then looked for the ditches.
#9 Back to the trail, south down the road, cut in ahead of the depression. Followed the veg boundary and got it.
#10 Little trickier. I saw a flag from the distance. But it wasn't my flag!!!! Bugger. This doesn't happen in AR unless you circle!!!! Grabbed the trail to get to the right spot for the attack.
#11 Seemed to easy to be true. I didn't trust it because it seemed that that 10 wasn't in the line of sight I expected? Well, guess I was wrong.
My favorite control was 5. I might have liked 8 better if I wasn't so FRUSTRATED. 9 was pretty in the pines.
Lessons learned:
1. It's your own race.
2. If I am justifying for more than 5 minutes I am probably not in the right place because of an over/under.
3. Any flag is not yours!

Anything to add? Hop in folks, I want to learn!
