Adventure Race 11:26:00 [3]

Race report and time/distances soon! Props to JustMe and Cataldo. Learned so much about HOW to race. I think I was more physically ready than logistically.

Orienteering 2:45:30 intensity: (41:35 @0) + (1:27:55 @1) + (21:23 @2) + (14:37 @3) 7.53 mi (21:59 / mi) +179m 20:28 / mi

Fun times with Shrek Feet bumping around on the Brighton Bishop 1:24K topo map. Wish I was as fast as she is in learning how to nav (and running, haha.) Lotsa fun. Skin so soft bug spray was awesome at keeping away the hoards of mosquitoes. At one point off trail had a huge allergen induced coughing fit. Wow, never had that happen before!

Note

No hammers dropped today! Allergies have been AWFUL. Fun stuff with Cataldo and Evingred. Decided to finish/add a few streamers to Brighton, paddle some and call it a day with a bike out and back. Did some exploring on the canoe...I think that inlet could go somewhere we would want to check out!

Paddling activity 1 [3]

Out of town comany stayed a little longer than expected, but got a cousin to go paddle with me. Out for a while, maybe covered a couple few miles. Took a weighted pack. Also, got a question about Performance Enhancing Drugs in AR today. My first reaction was total shock!

Out to ILRA and bumped around the badlands. Beautiful! Listened to TA1 with LegendaryRandy and Maria Pleschenko and a bit of Mike Kloser. Put in moving time. Had to stop for my running partner to take potty breaks and drink from puddles.

I may or may not have played a little hooky. In my defense, I was at a meeting at 7a, AND, the next couple of months will be brutal at work. :) Had fun with a topo map. I may have hung some streamers. It was hot too! not complaining! And, time to bust out the bug spray.

Tuesday night training. Only real pause was when we passed a bar and thought about stopping in...but then we thought the Monday night crew would heckle us relentlessly. This was post orienteering with Shrek Feet at Ortonville.

Started on a pretty standard loop, then saw a way through on a 2 track adjacent to RR tracks, and I was listening to TA1, so feeling adventurous I followed it. Pretty nice! Had to get home to get to work, so I cut out and came upon a barbed fence with my pooch! So, praying I wouldn't get shot, I hoisted her over, then me, and phew! On our way. Mr. Dubs, we should run that area...sandy and super unstable.

Garmin is extra wonkified, and I am tired of trying to get it to work tonight. Bumped around Dixboro (chatterbump city) to Eight Mile (yes, the famous one--but out in the country) to Marshall and back around to Rushton. Trying to get the ole legs movin...so tight after mega gardening this weekend, but got soooo much done.

Orienteering (Yellow training) 30:00 [1]

Took a boy scout and his mom on yellow for a few controls. Yay they didn't get lost! :)

Orienteering (Bishop lake Red) 2:33:42 intensity: (21 @0) + (47:34 @1) + (35:15 @2) + (1:02:01 @3) + (8:31 @4) 6.03 mi (25:29 / mi) +272m 22:21 / mi
ahr:124 max:167

Woo what a course to choose for my first Red! Carpe Diem! Did this with JustMe. As a note the first few did not go well. The last bit went much better as we found how our strengths worked together. Woo for finding our groove after the first bit! Also, I didn't have my thumb compass...felt a little lost without it!

#1 Followed the trail on the west and dumped in from the road. Wonder about the other trail?

#2 Ugh. Classic moment. I stopped to look at the map. JM was running. We were separated for a bit there...and then when I got onto the control...we were off...

#3 Wobbly over there...and after my several hour lesson with Mark Voit yesterday, I see things SO DIFFERENTLY! I can see how we got a little pushed by the contours, and look forward to my next orienteering. But back to this, we landed on 3 after a bobble. We seemed to get close, but not spot on with our orienteering.

#4 Got a little stuck in terrain, but found a way to align the map with the terrain and followed a reentrant around and there it was. :)

#5 Dropped a little too far south.

#6 Decided to attack from the known feature on the trail. Worked out, with s little wobble.

#7 The QR doesn't show this, but we were on the trail, crossed over to the other trail then attacked keeping an eye on the marsh.

#8 Executed well up the hill, and then wobbled around. Another one went right past it. Bugger.

#9 Meant to attack with marsh in sight, but I don't remember why we abandoned that plan. Then was too far south, used the trail to get back on track...yay!

#10 Wow! Yay!

#11 Pretty good there, except for the wobble over...wonder what happened there. Can't remember

#12 I remember this leg, and feeling mentally tired, and used the trail then up the spur around the depression. Should have stayed on the line. Next time I'm like this and there is a tempting trail I need to remember to NOT take the trail.

#13 Good.

#14 Good.

#15 After looking at the contours we said NO WAY. But, Mark V pointed out that 15 is unmissable on 2 trails...and I understand that bobbling through the contours may have worked out.

Finish...we ran!!! :)

Clean up a little here and a little there.

(After the meet I remembered about a year and a half ago wandering around Bishop on Mr. W's flagged course and found ONE control out of 10 in four hours.)

BTW those are NOT our split times! :) had to bum the map off of Mr. W.

Mark Voit is such a great teacher. Next week, he and I are MDing the Chilson meet. After an armchair lesson, we went into the field to streamer and I see things very differently now. Very kind of him to follow me around the woods.

Here are the biggest things I learned:

1. Look at the terrain with almost blurred eyes. Therein are the "pops" of terrain that can help guide your decision making heading from control to control.

2. Think about elevation change and how that can help you. If you are high and it's good route choice to stay high, that can help in what you see.

3. Sometimes it's better to start with the control you are heading to, and to work backward to where you are. I love this.

4. I learned alot more about how courses are developed and how course designers should think. I think that will help as well.

He also affirmed my style of naming off terrain features with *some* measure of soft compassing. Of course, he is ten times better than I am, so I am sure there is a lot for me to still learn about this. I am so luck to have had this opportunity, it was awesome. Shout out to Mr. Wonderful for some great coaching...Mark thought I improved alot in a very short period of time.

I need a new photosharing option. Flickr is complicated...

Here is the write up
#1--bugger...when I wasn't able to precisely determine where I was, I realized I should have attacked off the mouth of the creek. And, of course, on the QR, I went right past it. But I told myself to shake it off. This spring I am focusing on terrain features so I can nav faster...so have at it.

#2--Got bumped by the green and overcorrected a tad...but then made my way through. Slow, but intentional.

#3--Wobbly! Saw the impending contours, and was worried for that, but decided to locate the taller hill I saw in the distance and tried to plan my route on that. Got further south than I wanted...but got there and understand what happened.

#4--Well, what I QRd wasn't the plan. I know I was on the longer bike trail and attacked from the northern end. O well, need to check better before sharing! :)

#5--Ridiculously off line. I remember trying to stay a bit away from the green, but this was ridiculous!

#6--Trail to the junction and white. Maybe the green wasn't as bad...but this route seemed clear.

#7--Was slow on this one 1) because I went straight into green and 2) I had on my fuel belt (water--gotta get rid of those training wheels!) and it came off. As I was about 50% along my route, I saw the reentrant but it was steeper than the one I thought I was looking at, so my line stayed way too far north.

#8 Bumped over to it, strayed north...I see a theme here.

#9--Aimed to go through the water bodies and kept the power lines in sight.

F--Road, terrain, road, terrain....road won. Stopped to make sure I was going in right direction. :)

Mountain Bike race 46:59 [3] 7.41 mi (6:20 / mi)

Had a fabulous time with PaulS, Mr. Wonderful, and Mike Li. Mr. W invited me to join their team, and was really glad that I did! I left the Garmin behind in that I planned to be the swimmer if we had a bumper boats situation. See Mr. W's track.

The Bike-O was really fun, bumping around the badlands. One of the few times I didn't have the map in hand, so, I actually lost count of points. Mr. W navigated this part and he was brilliant in how he ordered them and choice of trail. Trail was a little wet and while I did some better on the MTB, I still need to work on hills. Part of the MTB was in the sandy gravelly Badlands, and the other part was on the yellow trail.

We landed at Meadow, and dumped bikes...

Running race 4:17 [3] 0.49 mi (8:44 / mi)

And ran down to the boats. Had Jen's pack for a minute, which felt great to help (albeit in a small way). Ate a honey stinger and tried to drink water. Didn't eat the rest of the race.

Paddling activity race (Canoeing) 46:48 [3] 3.64 mi (12:51 / mi)

Paddled a rather remote part of the Huron. Saw a group of 5 sand hill cranes and they certainly voiced their discontent at our presence. Pretty smooth paddling until we got to about the last thirdish and lots of deadfall and tricky paddling. Heard there were some dumps. Had Tizoc and Co. in sight, but couldn't catch 'em. Shucks. I had a hard time mentally switching from stern to bow. We did pretty well for our first time in a boat together. Love my new Aqua Bound paddle.

Orienteering 1:01:51 [3] 4.06 mi (15:14 / mi)

This section took advantage of some of the woods of ILRA, and then the Badlands. Admittedly, having some knowledge of the park was perhaps a little helpful. I felt really strong and good but left quad cramps came out of nowhere in the last 15 minutes or so. I didn't really want to say THAT to my dude teammates, so I came up with a list of reasons why I slowed down:
1. I am SO MUCH older than you guys. (Only 2 years older than Paul S.--darn)
2. You guys are SO MUCH taller than me, and have LONGER legs. (Jens mentioned, isn't the fastest runner in the world really short?)

I couldn't think of any other excuses, so had to really fess up about the cramp. Darn. Jens offered to take my pack. I think I politely said no thank you. But I overheard a conversation he had with my hubs and something like a "snarky NO" came out. I can't imagine.

Thrilled with our finish. (1st in 4 person COED and 2nd O/A) I think the bike was technically more difficult and the O was a little longer on this over last year. Need to compare deets.
