2018 Dusi Day 3, k2 with Alistair

Last day of dusi. Ali and I started with the last boats of elapsed time at around 11.30, the river was low and we had heard from earlier batches that the burma road portage was the only option, thankfully we could get through the rapids below the dam ok, but very slowly.

Burma was all that it’s made out to be with a 10&12min km’s going up and a maize of sneaks going down the other side, we relied on a local crew for some directions, still taking a few incorrect turns. Shooting Pumphouse was a good option saving massive time and easier at this level.

We were didn’t really gain or lose any positions, but two boats in A batch caught time on us and we ended 29th. Very happy with the result, day 1 could have been cleaner and my paddling could have been a bit stronger as I struggled a bit towards the end of each day, running felt good and I had a good feel for the river which saved us a lot! No dusi guts either, only heard of two cases so much better than expected.

Dusi is such a good news story. 14 out of the 20 guys in the top 10 were development paddlers, it’s good to be part of this sport.

Our Burma run: 37:51, 4.35km over / 7.4km around (Sibonelo & Siseko were 27:24) (Our estimated paddling time is 43.5min based on our speed from tops to burma), so a saving for us, but losing on the runners.

2018 Dusi Day 2, k2 with Alistair

Started my watch 12min late. Medium low level which suited us nicely, we started catching guys early and we had a few good lines all the way to the dam, unfortunately got caught in no mans land with no one to work with and ended up being chased down in the last 5kms. We made up 9 places today finishing in 28th overall. The level is looking very low for tomorrow and we may end up running to Burma from the dam! We will have a hard day to keep top 30!

2018 Dusi Day 1, k2 with Alistair

We dropped down to B batch to have an easier start with less hussle which worked really well even though we go spun out at earnie Pearse weir. Race consistently inside top 5 boats of the batch. Ali fell in at the sewerage farm portage and I fell in at the put in, which was disgusting. It cost us a bit. My sugars went up to 17 at pine tree portage and I stopped taking on sugar for a bit, they settle down to ~9 from finger neck to the end. We then had a bad swim at mission, we just got pushed right onto the bottom island and then missioned to get out and back in. Ran cabbage tree and scored 1.5min and paddled well to the finish.

37th overall, 31min behind Andy/Hank.
