spiked:16/25c shoes: VJ Falcon

TVOC Chiltern Challenge - Short Brown
Driving rain and only just above freezing - needed to keep moving to keep warm. A challenging day logistically for taking the family to O.
Map seemed reasonable, but many controls stuck into pits which were difficult to spot unless you were right on top of them. Passed within 3m of one of the control sites without seeing the flag at one point.
Lead-legged after yesterdays SOG. Didn't get a shower until bedtime - perhaps that part of the reason? Forest was generally runnable (in spite of a bit of bramble in places), but a day for those runners not too phased by hills - my heavy legs didn't enjoy that aspect much! Missed more controls on first pass than I would've liked - need to concentrate on getting bearings accurate and being more disciplined on attackpoint selection. Had to do without glasses due to the rain - might be time to invest in a visor of some sort.

Orienteering 44:30 [4] *** 5.2 km (8:33 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Abbot's Wood SOG - Blue

Area much improved since I last ran here (1999?).
1:10000 map showed much more useable detail than earlier 1:15000 version.
Lots of good work evident by the planner/mapper.
Enjoyed the course in spite of the widespread bramble cover (and a course design that made it difficult to avoid) and mud. Ran early today, with A taking second split. Didn't have chance to take B & E on the Yellow course due to a bit of a misunderstanding on childcare, but also put off by the half km each way to start and from finish. Childrens play equipment at the carpark was extensive and a good alternative to the yellow in the circumstances.
Very nice to be able to retire to T & A house for a main meal. Hospitality was such that we didn't manage to leave until 6:30pm!

Cycling 10:00 [3] 1.6 mi (6:15 / mi)
(rest day) shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Work
Was all set to be away in good time, then (as I wheeled the bike through the house gate) found I had a front tyre puncture. Replaced tube, but consequently 20mins later than I wanted. Provenance of replacement tube unknown - hoping that I dont find a flat when I head off from work!

Traditional rest day from formal exercise.

Weekend plans include Abbot's Wood SOG and TVOC Chiltern Challenge Event at Christmas Common.

Strong northerly wind subsided, so not too bad cycling. Quite cold (just above freezing).

Running 36:45 [3] 8.0 km (4:36 / km)

Actual Time, Estimated Distance.
First Thursday run for a couple of weeks. Felt reasonable, but not completely fluid. Chilly-ish (4-5C) Shorts, Lifa, short sleeved top. Hands a bit cold to start then warmed up. Ears (!) cold at the end.

Very fresh out. Tail wind to pool.

Swimming 39:53 [3] 2.0 km (19:57 / km)

Broke the 40 mins barrier nicely!
Kept ahead all the way with quite an even distribution of length times (apart from the very first - where I seemed to surge over the surface to good effect).
First outing for new Speedo Swimming trunks - less drag?
8 AM

Head wind and very heavy work + a couple of long traffic light changes.

New front brake blocks (Lifeline brand from Wiggle) fitted - adjustment needs time to bed in, but much more confidence with stopping under control.

Cycling 6:00 [3] 14.0 mi (26 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Pool

Quite a pleasant morning and relatively mild (mid single figure degree C).

Swimming 42:32 [3] 2.1 km (20:15 / km)

No formal exercise (though lots of general activity, including major apple tree pruning) left a good reserve of energy for this mornings swim.

Started off well, though a bit disappionted not to have broken 40 mins for 40 lengths. Seemed to have enough go in the stroke until the end - perhaps the timing/co-ordination/etc was slightly off?

Lost count slightly so decided to make sure that the quota had been done by swimming an extra couple of lengths. Pretty sure that it was 42 today and not 40.
8 AM

Cycling 13:00 [3] 3.0 mi (4:20 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Pool -> Work
Looking forward to Wiggle delivering the new brake blocks.
Braking ok-ish, but not good enough to feel confident to go at top speed and be able to stop with appropriate control. Back brake acceptable, but front was only used very lightly due to metal shoe being exposed.
6 PM

Cycling 7:00 [3] 1.6 mi (4:22 / mi)
