Orienteering race 1:36:30 [5] 2.99 mi (32:16 / mi) +58m 30:27 / mi

Started watch late but corrected time in log. Another sloppy day but plenty of exercise and some good legs even if done slowly. Poured all day. We retired to a sports bar to watch the relays on TV.

Orienteering race 54:51 [5]

One big mistake and one even bigger mistake. Still, had a good time in the forest. Pretty far behind the leader. Outdoor shower was nice. Fun watching the middle events afterwards with Adam.

And now for something quite different. Today was the WOC rest day so the spectator event was organized by the Fredrikstad Ski Club in an area with a lot or rock and trails to run on. Very fast. The winner of M70 ran 8:04 / k. I found it to be very much fun.

First day at the Mørk arena. Also a tough area to go fast in although the Scandinavians seem to be able to do it. I’m getting much better at staying in contact with the map. Actually felt pretty good about my run even though I made another rookie mistake. The seldom seen but always disastrous “180”. Adam and I agree that place in the results is not a good way to gauge your experience here.

Super bad run for me but it was a fascinating area. Enjoyed it regardless.

Orienteering race 19:00 [5] 2.62 km (7:15 / km) +49m 6:37 / km
shoes: Asics GT2000 7

First race in Norway. A sprint in Sarpsborg combining a little bit of everything: village, woods, a park. Felt tentative and had to stop to read the map at times. Still it felt good to be finally running on a map.

Note

Opening ceremony for the world championships. USA showed up in force for the parade of nations but Canada was mysteriously absent. The “concert” was somewhat ambiguous but there was a brass band and all the speeches were both short and in English. Nice to see North Korea represented.
