Orienteering race 32:29 [4] 5.0 km (6:30 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Oceania Middle Distance - Beechworth - 3.8Km 200m
Much better today. Nice cool weather. A bit tired, but a good steady run, although it was a lot easier (potential for small mistakes but not big mistakes like yesterday). No significant time losses at controls but suboptimal lines at times.
Right heel has been quite sore the last few days so looking forward to giving it a bit of a rest.
A successful week apart from yesterday. Really enjoyable terrain all the way through. It's going to be hard to get motivated for any orienteering back in NZ for a while.

Note

Went to Mt Buffalo National Park in the afternoon. Nice 7 Km walk up to the highest point. Would have been nice to have been able to spend a bit more time there.

Orienteering race 1:07:23 [4] 8.0 km (8:25 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Oceania Long - Kangaroo Crossing - 6.7Km 340m
Bit of a nightmare. The heat got to me in a big way over the second half of the course. Knew I might be in trouble when I was sweating profusely by the time I got to the start despite walking very slowly.

Good course and area, but I was not in much of a state to appreciate it. Navigation wobbly as well. Lost 15s at 2, 45s at 3, slow route to 5 (1 min?), 15s at 7, way too far left going to 8, but probably only cost 30s as had a very good approach to the control. But starting to really feel the heat at that point. Climbing to 10, just forgot to navigate - too busy trying to work out the route to 11. Had to relocate and lost 2.5 mins - stupid, but mainly down to the heat. Then on 10-11 started off on a straight route but feeling awful and bailed out left to the track and ran all the way round. Probably lost 3-4 mins on the leg. Also went to a drinks point and poured a cup of water over my head. Have obviously not had to do this for a while as I hadn't worked out what the effect on the glasses would be!
OK for the rest of the course, but slow. Pretty much collapsed on finishing and had to lie in the shade for half an hour before I was capable of doing anything. Feeing terrible for a long time afterwards.

Orienteering 19:30 [1] 2.0 km (9:45 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212

Model event for Oceania long just outside Beechworth. A mixture of very slow jog and walking, trying to look at all the rock, of which there was rather a lot. Good fun, but navigation a bit wobbly at times.

Orienteering race 32:20 [3] 6.0 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212

Day 3 of the Schools competition on the relay area - Pomingalarna - 5.1Km
No rocks this time and generally fairly easy but quite fun. Just over 30 degrees though, so hard work. Steady pace - never pushed hard and walked a lot of the hills. Caught Jemery Day up a minute at 1 and he was just behind me all the way to the end.
A bit off line once or twice but the only significant time loss was 6-7 where I got off line, overcorrected and then punched a control that wasn't mine. About 30s lost?
Much less tired after today's race than I was yesterday.

Orienteering race 47:49 [3] 7.0 km (6:50 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Schools long race - Connorton - .6.2Km 225m
Trickier than expected - granite terrain with a lot of detail. Would have been very enjoyable but it has now got a bit too hot for comfort and I was really struggling over the last 10-15 minutes. Felt really tired afterwards despite not really trying particularly hard.

Technically a bit shaky. Lucky at times. Lost about 45s at 8 where I took a poor route to the right and then wasn't quite sure I was in the right place and failed to look up and see the control as I went past it. About 20s lost at 13 running to the wrong feature when it looked as if someone had punched a control there. Then lost about 30s going to 15 when I swallowed something that didn't want to be swallowed and had to stop. Came out after a few seconds coughing and retching! Running with Lizzie for much of the second half of the course, but she wasn't particularly racing either.

Orienteering race 15:41 [3] 3.5 km (4:29 / km)
shoes: Air Pegasus 30 Darker blue

Schools Sprint - Kildare College, Wagga Wagga.
Fun sprint on a 1:2000 map, so everything happening very quickly.
Went out with the intention of not racing and managed to stick to that despite temptation - Natasha started off at exactly the same time on the same course and we caught Stuart E up 1 minute quite early on. It was a real struggle to deliberately keep at a pace which let them gradually get away!

Nice and smooth most of the way, but didn't spot a dead end leaving 19 and then wasn't quite ready for 29-21 and picked the wrong route having not spotted that there was a route to the left.

Injuries all seem to be under control, and felt fine afterwards.

Orienteering race 34:38 [4] 5.0 km (6:56 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Oceania Relay - Split Rock - M50/45 4.2Km 270m
Really enjoyable course - very little let up in the navigation, with rock detail all the way but good running (apart from the steep up / down).
Running 3rd leg. Missed Dave Crofts coming in, but Jock also missed his runner so we were basically starting at the same time with Bruce Arthur a few seconds ahead. Missed the first control by about 20s - saw it but assumed it wasn't mine because the feature looked too small. So Jock got just ahead and Bruce got away. We had different 2nd controls. Mine was higher up so I went out to the top of the hill on the way to 3. Jock's was lower so he contoured to 3 through the rock, and I assume I got ahead of him there. On my own through the next few controls, being quite careful. Had a longer split to 7, and apparently Jock could see me going to 8. Good up to 11, but slow and not in control on the descent to 12. Lucky to see the TV camera position below 12 which allowed me to correct. Then easy couple of legs to finish with. Looked back coming up to the fence below 13 to see Bruce just behind, but enough of a gap to stay ahead with Jock coming in about a minute later. Happy!

Orienteering race 50:43 [4] 8.0 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Aus Long Champs - Split Rock (nr Cootamundra) - M50 - 6.7Km 240m
Nice area with lots of rock. Some tricky controls, and some easier bits. From 13 to the end a bit boring, but enjoyed the course overall.
Went out not intending to attack the course as it didn't count for anything in the context of the week. Concentrating more on getting it right. Largely succeeded on both counts though still quite tired afterwards. Missed about 15s at 13, but apart from that the only time losses were a few seconds 9-10 (trapped by rocks) and a few seconds 15-16 (trapped by barbed wire).

Event: Oceania 2019

Orienteering race 16:09 [4] 3.0 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212

Oceania Sprint Champs - Charles Sturt Uni, Wagga Wagga - M50A
A mix of campus plus a fairly steep partly bush covered hill. Very difficult to decide on shoes beforehand because right heel has been quite sore the past couple of days and I didn't want to aggravate it. In the end O shoes were OK.
Quite a fiddly course - a few nasty little traps which weren't easy to decipher on the map. Felt like a pretty poor run. Lost a few seconds at 6 (ran to the corner of the building rather than the tree). Didn't see the best route to 7 ( a few seconds). Failed to spot that 9 was on top of the bridge (-10s). A bit hesitant on 10. -5s on 17. -25s on 18 - didn't realise the control was on the other side of the wall and went up the steps. Poor route and hesitant to 20 (-10s). Mostly running OK, but felt slow on the terrain. Injuries were OK while running, but heel a bit sore afterwards, and right hip sore both before and after.

Fortunately none of the Aussies did particularly well either.
