Orienteering race 2:00:29 [3] *** 11.7 km (10:18 / km)
spiked:7/15c

First time racing on a 1:15000 map. That and all the tricky contours gave me a lot of difficulty.

1. Fine, Hesitated a few times
2. Parallel error due to misreading contours
3. Went past it, struggled reading contours
4. Fine
5. Fine, just slow
6. Running with a west point guy. Understood the map ok. Kept veering North but compass kept me on track
7. One of my better legs - read the 3 reentrants then found the rocks
8. Terribly slow going up and over the ridge. Vegetation seemed thicker than white too. Climbed straight up the next hill rather that follow the valley
9. Fine
10. Fine
11. Map showed 2 streams crossings on route. I thought I crossed two streams then came to a third. After a lot of head scratching, determined it was the 2nd stream. Still not sure how that happened.
12. Went straight there but kept getting disoriented, pausing to reorient
13. I must have gone right by it. Spent a bunch of time higher up the slope trying to figure out where I was.
14. Went down the reentrant NW of 13 thinking it was the one NNW of 13 that lead to 14, got confused again.
15. Fine
16. Spent way to long trying to find a good stream crossing point. Should have just jumped where I came to it. I blame the ankle

Orienteering race 19:37 [4] *** 3.3 km (5:57 / km) +74m 5:21 / km
spiked:9/15c

#1-3 no problems

#4 - Drifted south leaving #3, so decided to take the open ground in stead of straight through the forest as originally planned. Seemed like a lot of extra distance but I won the split - got a little lucky there

#5 and #6 - Kept getting off track and having to recheck the map. Should have recognized that I didn't understand the map earlier and paused just a second to figure it out

#7 Ran to the clearing and found it effectively, also got a good read on #8 while running

#9 - Open ground with bits of white forest. Couldn't what I was seeing to jive with the map and lost time going to a control on another course

Also got turned around leaving #13 and wasted time getting back on track.

Orienteering race 24:45 [3] *** 2.9 km (8:32 / km)
spiked:16/21c

Lots of short legs up and down the river bank. Had a few lapses in concentration which led to lost time, #14 especially. Rolled my ankle going to #17 when I had my head up looking for the control. Thankfully the last few legs were mostly open ground and I was able to hobble home and hold off Ryan! Moderate swelling in the ankle tonight. Hope its feeling better by next weekend for Georgia...
