Open Ocean with the experienced paddlers. Our novice boat kept up with the lead veteran boats. Woo! (We got in trouble for not looping back, though) Happy with how we did in the open ocean Steering was a bit easier with slightly smaller waves.

Paddle 1:15:00 [3] 5.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Forgot to start the watch today. We switched up the steering and I helped steer from seat 5 as another teammate tried it for the first time. It's crazy when you realize how far you've come steering after just a few weeks going back to what it was like to be a first timer. We did some sprints and got video taken. I tried to paddle as much as possible when going by the camera rather than steering.

Run race (Orienteering) 3:51:49 intensity: (5:39 @0) + (20:17 @1) + (47:34 @2) + (1:31:26 @3) + (51:48 @4) + (15:05 @5) 13.12 mi (17:40 / mi) +2691ft 14:48 / mi
ahr:153 max:181

First LA Orienteering race. It was. 4-hour trail-o, so I was thinking it would be easy. Well, lots of trails that weren't on tre map and I was thinking that a "main" trail would be about the width of a paved bike path and a "minor" trail would be single track. Main trail was more like a dirt road and minor trail was still pretty wide. Anyway, lost maybe 30-40 minutes because I took a wrong trail up that want on the map and then couldn't figure out where I was. After that I recovered and enjoyed the views on the course. O-Ing in LA for the first time, look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign. This is all so crazy...
Anyway, I pushed harder toward the end and ended up with first solo female. Happy with that! I was so tired that it took me 3 hours to even get an appetite after the race. Met some local orienteers and adventure racers too, so that's cool. Overall, a good day!

Paddle race (Santa Barbara Rig Run) 53:58 intensity: (1:47 @1) + (17:04 @2) + (34:25 @3) + (42 @4) 4.72 mi (11:26 / mi)
ahr:150 max:164

Rig Run outrigger race in Santa Barbara. It was our first open water race and I planned to do a lot of paddling and less steering, but the conditions proved otherwise. We were rocking it. We were in 4th place overall for the women and winning our division at about the 60% mark of the race. We were headed toward shore, and due to the angle of the coast in Santa Barbara, the waves were coming from our left, which is where the ama is. This also makes the boat want to veer to the left, which means steering on the right, which was hectic. At one point, the ama started lifting, and I leaned left while yelling at the team to lean left, but it was too late... we went over. We lost just under 3 minutes recovering, which was enough to drop us to 6th in our division (out of 9) and way back out of contention. BUT, at least we know what we can do. We'll be hungry for it next race. I'm proud of the team for keeping our heads together and getting the boat going again relatively fast.

Also, we have two weeks to practice before the next race, and I'm hoping for mild winds so we can actually safely go out in the open ocean to practice being in the swells. Next time... it's ours.

Hike 2:23:50 intensity: (1:21:29 @1) + (17:44 @2) + (38:19 @3) + (6:18 @4) 7.35 mi (19:34 / mi) +1893ft 15:44 / mi
ahr:132 max:166

Hiked Franklin trail with Agi, Tim, and Jenny. Really great trail just down the road from work. It's a great workout with lots of climbing. Jenny led the way on the way up and really pushed the pace for hiking. It was good. We were all surprised at how green it was and different from hiking in Ventura, which is only 15 miles to the south. Definitely have to come back and start just a little earlier so we can do the whole trail. We needed about 30 minutes more of light today (or maybe headlamps) to do the whole thing.

Paddle 1:08:12 [3] 4.74 mi (14:23 / mi) +9ft 14:22 / mi

Short practice before our next race. De-rigged our boats. Windy. Forgot to stop watch at the end... again.

Blah, not feeling it today. Got out there and after 5 minutes decided to bag it and just do some walking. Maybe I have learned something.

ahr:133 max:153

Forgot to stop the watch at the end.

Our first day in the open ocean as a novice team! It went well. Saturday is our first open ocean race, so we needed to get some time out there today to practice. Super excited for our team. I think we're going to be great and just continue to move up. :-D

Road Bike 1:41:18 [3] 25.91 mi (15.3 mph) +557ft
ahr:153 max:175

Rode to Santa Barbara to pick up my car at the zoo where I left it last night after the company party when I got a ride back home. It was a really nice route and even the roads had great shoulders and felt really safe.
Some headwind today for maybe half the ride. I passed 11 other cyclists and got passed by 0, so that made me happy. At one point, I was pushing hard to catch this guy on a mountain bike who didn't really seem to be working that hard. I finally caught him and realized he was on an e-bike. He passed me back shortly thereafter, but I didn't count him since he was totally cheating.

Paddle race (Outrigger Canoe) 53:57 [3] 5.27 mi (10:14 / mi)
ahr:138 max:153

My first outrigger race! The team did great. We actually had two newer paddlers in our boat - one paddling less than 3 weeks and one who'd been in a boat 4 times before. Nevertheless, we did awesome and actually took 3rd in our division, which is the first time in our club's history that a novice team medaled in the first race of the season. People were impressed with my steering, but you've gotta have the motor too, so I'm proud of our team. It turns out that we were only 18 seconds away from first place! We are only going to continue to improve. Exciting!

Run around town. Didn't get out in time to go up the hill, but it was a nice little run and mostly flat. :)

Paddle (Outrigger Canoe) 1:13:17 [3] 5.0 mi (14:39 / mi) +8ft 14:38 / mi
ahr:128 max:160

Last "hard" practice before our first outrigger race. I'm really coming along as a steersman. (It corrected steerswoman to steersman) We had 3 boats today, and our boat really rocked it out with some awesome buoy turns. The coach had the other two boats take shortcuts to catch back up. I was just about to cut in on them and pass on the inside on the last turn, but that was the end. I feel a lot better about the race Saturday and my preparedness for being around a bunch of other boats. Steering is a big responsibility and your team relies on you to get them around the course efficiently. I have a great team, and I think we're going to rock it out! :-D

Paddle (Stellar SR) 2:02:57 [3] 9.2 mi (13:22 / mi) +5ft 13:21 / mi
ahr:122 max:133

Thought I was going to try out an OC1 today but the person I was going to trade boats with didn't show. Still got in a good paddle. Focused on technique and had my fastest average ever on the ski and even occasionally saw 6+ mph. Kim told me that surf ski helps outrigger paddling but not vice versa. I disagree. My catch and my rotation are so much better now after 5 weeks of outrigger paddling. I should be able to maintain at least 5+ mph, but I need to make it a little more natural and get in better shape for surf ski. I was tired toward the end and often caught myself slacking.

Paddle (Outrigger canoe) 1:07:06 [3] 4.49 mi (14:57 / mi) +7ft 14:55 / mi
ahr:120 max:148

Got a great compliment from coach today saying he thought I would rise up to be one of the steering stars on the team. :) practiced turns and starts/ racing, and our boat rocked it out.
Huli drill today after practice- flipping the boat. It want as bad as I thought, but a couple people panicked. We eventually got it together.

Paddle (Outrigger) 1:18:14 [3] 4.77 mi (16:24 / mi) +6ft 16:23 / mi
ahr:125 max:154

Finally figured out how to use my crew to turn more efficiently. Coach has been telling me for several practices that I can't do it all myself when it's a 400 pound boat with 6 people in it. Felt really good. We were paddling really well. There was some drama in the other boat, so I'm hoping that gets sorted out and that everyone can be cool and friends.

Paddle 1:39:43 [3] 6.15 mi (16:13 / mi) +10ft 16:11 / mi
ahr:120 max:162

Wow, so windy but we made it out! I was struggling whenever we stopped to keep the boat straight and not blowing across the channel. Also once I got my tail end clipped by the other boat. I should have drawn to get away from it. Stressful day for me, but I know it will make me better for race day.

Mountain Bike (Sulphur Mountain) 2:25:09 [3] 18.0 mi (7.4 mph) +2059ft
ahr:142 max:164

After a TE of 5.0 last time I rode this, I was made an effort to take it a bit easier. I rode to the 6.8 mile mark in 1:20:14 last time and was red-lining it. Today, took 1:25:38 to the same point and barely got into Z4 at all. Plus, I started my watch at the car and before I had to go through the gate - maybe a minute and a half there. So, a bit slower, but definitely in better shape!
