Adventure Race 8:27:00 [3]

I was SUPER worried going into this. I have been feeling terrible during my training and just took the last 9 days off to try to combat persistent muscle soreness in my hamstrings from pretty much everything I did over several weeks. I mean, I went to yoga on Wednesday and had (mildly) sore hamstrings Thursday and Friday.
Legs still felt super heavy and I couldn't really run very well, so I grabbed Phil's pack and he towed me on the road run sections. Then, on the bike, he towed me on all the roads. I was on my own for the trails/rocks.
It took seemingly forever for the pack to break up. Finally, after the second island point on foot, the group broke up and we were on our own for the most part. I was fighting back the tears a few times because I felt just incapable of running, but we were lucky that the course was mostly on bikes! Hamstrings were acting up on the bike still and I couldn't maintain a pace that I normally could have without a tow.
I'm glad that the Canadian team across from us during map planning set the expectations low for the rail trail because it was a lot better than I had been expecting. They made it sound nearly unrideable, but it was much better than sand and only really soft in a few short sections. At one point, we ditched our bikes in the woods to get the point, and I stepped on something soft on the way out. When we returned, there were wasps all around the bikes. Phil wins teammate of the year award for running in and getting both of them.
I was super happy to hit the paddle! My boat did get a bit trashed on the bottom, but I know it's not serious. Just superficial scrapes.
The single track was interesting and even more tight and twisty than my local City Forest trail. We wanted to cut some off, but decided against it as we didn't want to risk going the wrong way on the trail and losing more than the 3 minutes we thought we'd save. "Hammered" to the finish and got the last 3 foot points to finish first in our division and 3rd overall. We were constantly aware of Jens and Maria behind us chomping at our heels waiting to capitalize on an error, so that kept the motivation high.
I'm happy to say that I'm somewhat sore today, but the persistent hamstring soreness that has characterized my post-workouts lately is very minor. Now I just need to get rested enough so that I can actually feel OK during a workout/race.
